Chapter 13: The Woman Who Knew About My Inheritance
My father didn't sleep that night.
He sat at the kitchen table with my mother's handwritten list spread in front of him, staring at Vanessa's name as if the ink might rearrange itself into something less terrible.
I sat across from him, the black flash drive resting between us.
“Dad,” I said quietly, “how did you meet Vanessa?””
He rubbed his face.
“At a charity auction. About eighteen months after your mother died. She was helping organize the event for a children's education foundation.””
“Did she know who you were?””
“She knew my name. I assumed she'd heard about the company.””
“Did she know about Mom's trust?””
He looked at the list again.
“I never told her. Not before we married.””
“Then how could Mom have written her name?””
“I don't know.””
He sounded frightened by his own answer.
At eight the next morning, Susan arrived with a forensic specialist named Kevin Patel. They took the flash drive to a secure room and made a forensic copy before opening any files.
Dad and I waited outside.
At one point, he reached for my hand.
“I should have told you about the trust years ago.””
“Would it have changed anything?””
“Maybe. You might have understood why certain people were asking questions. You might have felt safer telling me when Vanessa started acting strangely.””
I looked down.
“I did tell you I didn't want to stay home.””
“And I should have listened more carefully.””
There was no excuse in his voice. Just regret.
When Kevin finally emerged, he carried a laptop.
“The drive contains several documents, photographs, and an audio file,” he said.
“Some files appear to have been copied from an older computer. I've preserved the originals and verified that the audio file can be opened.””
Susan nodded.
“Let's hear it.””
Kevin played the recording.
At first, there was only the faint hum of a room and the scrape of a chair.
Then my mother's voice filled the room.
“If you're hearing this, I wasn't able to resolve the situation myself.””
Dad closed his eyes.
It had been years since he'd heard her voice.
“Laura,” he whispered.
The recording continued.
“I discovered that someone asked questions about Emily's trust before the documents were finalized. At first, I assumed it was a misunderstanding. Then I learned that the person had access to information about my estate that I had never shared outside a small circle.””
A pause.
“I confronted the person I suspected, but I didn't receive an honest answer.””
The recording crackled.
“I don't know whether this is about money, control, or something else. I refuse to let fear determine Emily's future. The trust is protected by independent administrators, and my instructions are explicit.””
Then came a sentence that made Dad lean forward.
“Vanessa knows more than she has admitted. She approached me before she ever met Michael, asking questions about a child who would inherit a substantial estate.””
I stopped breathing.
Dad stared at the laptop.
The recording continued.
“I didn't tell her anything. I asked how she knew about Emily. She claimed she had heard a rumor through someone connected to the charity. I didn't believe her.””
A long silence followed.
“Michael, if you ever hear this, please don't assume everyone involved understood what they were doing. Some people may have been manipulated. But protect Emily's right to make her own choices. That is the only thing that matters.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Dad turned toward Susan.
“We need to find Vanessa.””
Susan nodded.
“The authorities are already trying to establish contact. We should also determine whether this recording can be authenticated and whether it establishes anything beyond Laura's suspicions.””
Kevin opened another file.
“This is a scanned document dated several months before the charity auction.””
The page contained a short email exchange between my mother and an unfamiliar address.
The sender had written:
The woman you asked about has approached me again. She claims she wants to help secure Emily's future. I recommend that you keep her away from the trust.
The message was signed only with the initials *D.B.*
Daniel Brooks.
Dad's expression darkened.
“Daniel was involved before Vanessa even met me?””
“It appears someone using those initials communicated with your wife,” Susan said.
“We need to verify the sender's identity and the full email history.””
Kevin opened the final document.
It was a photograph of a handwritten note, apparently written by my mother.
If Daniel is telling the truth, Vanessa is not the person who first approached her. Someone introduced them.
Beneath the sentence, Mom had written another name.
*Margaret Wells.*
My stomach dropped.
“Margaret introduced Vanessa to Mom?””
Dad shook his head slowly.
“I thought Margaret met Vanessa at the charity event. She told me she'd only spoken to her briefly.””
Susan examined the date.
“The note predates the event.””
Dad immediately called Margaret.
She answered, sounding exhausted.
“Michael?””
“Did you introduce Vanessa to Laura?””
Silence.
Then Margaret whispered, “Yes.””
Dad gripped the phone.
“You told me they met at the charity auction.””
“I lied.””
“Why?””
“Because Laura asked me to keep the original meeting private until she could understand why Vanessa was asking about Emily.””
“Who brought Vanessa to her?””
Margaret began crying.
“Daniel Brooks.””
The room seemed to shrink around us.
“Why would Daniel introduce Vanessa to my wife?”” Dad demanded.
“I don't know what he intended. He told me Vanessa worked with a foundation interested in educational trusts. He said Laura might be able to advise her.””
“And you believed him?””
“I did. At first.””
Dad's voice dropped.
“What changed?””
Margaret hesitated.
“Laura discovered that Daniel and Vanessa had met before. They weren't strangers. They'd been discussing your family, your business, and Emily's inheritance.””
I stared at the list on the table.
The names were no longer separate pieces of a mystery. They were beginning to connect.
Then Margaret said something that stopped Dad cold.
“There was one more person at that first meeting, Michael. Someone who never appeared in any of the emails.””
“Who?””
Margaret's answer came in a whisper.
“Your father.””
Dad went rigid.
“My father died before Emily was born.””
“I know.””
“Then explain what you're saying.””
Margaret struggled to speak.
“Your father had a private meeting with Daniel and Vanessa shortly before he became ill. I only learned about it afterward. Laura found a note in his files suggesting that he had been warned someone might try to use the family inheritance to gain control of your company.””
Dad stared at the screen.
“My father knew?””
“He may have suspected something. I can't say more without the original documents.””
“Where are they?””
Margaret took a shaky breath.
“There's a locked cabinet in the old family office. Your father kept records there that were never transferred to the company archive.””
Dad stood abruptly.
“Then we're going to find them.””
But as he reached for his coat, Susan's phone rang.
She listened for several seconds, then looked directly at Dad.
“We have a problem. Daniel Brooks has just contacted the investigators.””
“What did he say?”” Dad asked.
Susan's expression tightened.

“He claims Vanessa has been missing since last night.””
Then she added, “And he says he knows where the second flash drive is.””
