Chapter 9: The Secret Behind My Mother's Death
Dad read the message three times.
Then he showed it to Rachel.
She stared at the photograph.
"That's David?""
Dad nodded.
"He's worked for me for eleven years.""
Rachel zoomed in on the image.
"Look at the envelope.""
Dad enlarged it.
A familiar blue logo appeared in the corner.
It belonged to the company that had handled my mother's life insurance policy.
Grandma Margaret suddenly stood.
"Michael, call the police.""
Dad was already dialing.
But Rachel reached across the table.
"Wait.""
Dad looked at her.
"What?""
"Before you do anything, you need to know why Vanessa wants that envelope.""
Rachel removed another document from her folder.
It was a photocopy of an insurance claim from three years earlier.
My mother's name appeared at the top.
I stared at it.
"What is that?""
Rachel hesitated.
"Your mother had a life insurance policy.""
Dad nodded.
"Yes. I handled the claim after she died.""
"Who received the payout?""
Dad looked confused.
"Her estate.""
Rachel shook her head.
"Not according to this document.""
She placed her finger on a line near the bottom.
The listed beneficiary was not my father.
It was a trust.
A trust controlled by an attorney who had represented my grandfather.
Dad frowned.
"That can't be right. I was told the policy paid directly into our family account.""
Rachel looked at him.
"Who told you?""
Dad didn't answer immediately.
Then his face changed.
"David.""
Rachel nodded.
"That's what I suspected.""
I felt a chill run through me.
"Are you saying David took Mom's insurance money?""
"Not necessarily. But someone redirected the payment.""
Dad picked up the document.
"How much?""
Rachel looked at me.
"Six hundred and twenty thousand dollars.""
I stopped breathing.
"That's more than the inheritance?""
"Yes.""
Dad sank into his chair.
"Laura's policy was worth that much?""
Rachel nodded.
"Your mother had arranged it so the money would be protected for Emily's future.""
I looked at Dad.
"Did you know?""
He shook his head slowly.
"No, sweetheart. I swear I didn't.""
His voice broke.
"I thought the insurance company had settled everything.""
Rachel continued.
"Vanessa had access to the original paperwork because she was already helping with the family's financial administration before Laura died.""
Dad stared at the table.
"She was never supposed to have access to the policy.""
"Someone gave it to her.""
Grandma Margaret began crying.
"Laura told me she was worried about missing documents. She said she had discovered that someone had been going through her desk.""
Dad stood and walked toward the window.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"She made me promise to wait until Emily was safe.""
I looked at my grandmother.
"Was Mom afraid Vanessa would hurt her?""
Grandma wiped her cheeks.
"I don't know, sweetheart.""
Rachel closed her folder.
"But I think there's something we haven't considered.""
Dad turned.
"What?""
"Vanessa may not have entered your family because of the house.""
He frowned.
"Then why?""
Rachel placed a photograph on the table.
It showed Vanessa standing outside a law office with a man I didn't recognize.
Behind them was a sign bearing my grandfather's old company name.
Rachel pointed to the man.
"Do you recognize him?""
Dad studied the photograph.
"No.""
Rachel turned the picture over.
There was a handwritten name.
*Richard Hale.*
Dad suddenly sat down.
"Richard?""
"Who is he?"" I asked.
Dad looked at me.
"He was your grandfather's business partner.""
Grandma nodded.
"And the man your mother accused of mismanaging the family estate.""
Rachel added another document.
It was an old business agreement.
Richard Hale had been granted access to several family properties, including the land beneath our house.
But there was a handwritten amendment attached.
It stated that the property would eventually belong to Laura's descendants.
Dad read it slowly.
"Emily.""
He looked at me.
"This house wasn't simply something your mother left you.""
Rachel shook her head.
"It was the last piece of a much larger estate.""
She pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.
"Your grandfather placed several properties into a family trust. Laura inherited control after his death. When she died, that control passed to Emily.""
I stared at the papers.
"How much is it worth?""
Dad didn't answer.
Rachel did.
"More than two million dollars.""
The room seemed to tilt.
Vanessa hadn't simply wanted my bedroom.
She wanted the house.
The inheritance.
The insurance money.
Everything my mother had spent her life protecting.
Dad took out his phone.
"I'm calling the police.""
This time, Rachel didn't stop him.
He explained the forged documents, the financial transfers, and the threatening message.
An officer told him to preserve the photograph and avoid confronting Vanessa.
But before the call ended, another message arrived.
This one contained a video.
Dad opened it.
The image was shaky, as if someone had recorded it secretly.
It showed our old house.
More specifically, it showed my mother's bedroom.
Vanessa stood beside the wardrobe.
David was behind her.
And between them was a man I'd never seen before.
He was holding a small metal box.
Vanessa looked directly at the camera.
Then she spoke.
"Michael, if you're watching this, you've made a terrible mistake.""
She opened the box.
Inside was a photograph of my mother.
Then she lifted a folded document.
"Laura wasn't the innocent woman you think she was.""
Dad's face went rigid.
Vanessa continued.
"She knew exactly what happened to Richard Hale. And she helped cover it up.""
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Dad.
"Is that true?""
He shook his head, but he seemed uncertain.
"I don't know.""
Then his phone rang.
It was the police officer he'd just spoken with.
"Mr. Michael, we need you to come home immediately. We've located David.""
Dad stood.
"Where?""
The officer paused.
"He's at your property.""
"And Vanessa?""
Another silence.
"She's there, too. But there's a problem.""
Dad tightened his grip on the phone.
"What problem?""
The officer lowered his voice.
"We found an old safe in your wife's bedroom. It was recently opened.""
"What's inside?""
"Nothing.""
Dad closed his eyes.
Then the officer added:
"Except for one photograph of Emily as a newborn, and a handwritten note addressed to her.""
I felt my heart stop.
"What does the note say?"" I whispered.
Dad put the call on speaker.
May you like
The officer read the final sentence.
*"If Vanessa ever comes back for the house, tell Emily that the man she believes is her grandfather may not be her biological grandfather at all.""*
