Chapter 3: The Question That Destroyed Her Smile

The garage door rolled upward.

Light flooded the concrete floor.

My father stood in the doorway wearing his navy business suit, one hand gripping the handle of his suitcase.

He looked at me.

Then at the mattress.

Then at the thin blanket on the freezing floor.

His suitcase slipped from his hand.

"Emily?""

I tried to smile.

It came out as a weak cough.

"Daddy.""

He rushed toward me and dropped to his knees.

"Oh my God. Sweetheart, what happened?""

He touched my forehead.

His expression changed immediately.

"You're burning up.""

"I'm cold," I whispered.

He pulled off his expensive wool coat and wrapped it around my shoulders.

"How long have you been sleeping here?""

I couldn't answer immediately.

"Three days.""

His jaw tightened.

"Three days?""

I nodded.

"Maybe four.""

He looked around the garage again.

There was no heater.

No proper bedding.

My schoolbag sat beneath a shelf, and my shoes were beside the washing machine.

"Why?"" he asked.

I looked toward the kitchen door.

"Vanessa said Brittany needed my room.""

Dad slowly stood.

"What?""

Before I could explain, Vanessa came rushing downstairs.

She was wearing a cream silk robe, her hair perfectly arranged.

"Michael! You're home early!""

Dad turned toward her.

"Why is my daughter sleeping in the garage?""

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"Oh, sweetheart, it's not what it looks like.""

"Then tell me what it looks like.""

"Emily has been having behavioral problems. She's been disrespectful, refusing to follow house rules. I thought a little discipline might help her understand—"

"In November?""

Vanessa glanced at me.

"Michael, she's exaggerating.""

Dad pointed toward the mattress.

"Does that look like a guest bedroom to you?""

"She insisted on staying out here.""

I shook my head.

"No, Daddy. She locked the door.""

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"Emily, don't start.""

Dad stepped between us.

"Don't you dare speak to her like that.""

Brittany appeared at the top of the stairs wearing pink pajamas.

She looked at Dad, then at me.

"Oh, you're home.""

Dad stared at her.

"Did you know Emily was sleeping here?""

Brittany shrugged.

"Mom said Emily needed to learn some manners.""

"She's sixteen.""

"She's old enough to stop acting like a baby.""

Dad looked at her for several seconds.

Then he turned toward Vanessa.

"Where is Emily's phone?""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"I took it because she was misbehaving.""

Dad slowly reached into his pocket and pulled out his own phone.

"That's interesting.""

Vanessa's face changed.

"What?""

He held up the screen.

"Yesterday, I received a message from Emily saying she was having a wonderful time at her friend's house.""

I stared at him.

"I never sent that.""

Dad nodded.

"I know.""

He scrolled through the messages.

"Then I received another one saying she didn't want to come home because she was enjoying her independence.""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Michael, I can explain.""

Dad looked at her.

"Can you explain why someone using my daughter's number has been lying to me?""

"She gave me permission to answer her messages.""

"No, she didn't," I whispered.

Dad looked down at me.

"Did Vanessa tell you I knew you were staying somewhere else?""

I nodded.

"She said you'd be angry if I bothered you.""

Dad closed his eyes for a moment.

Then he took out his phone and called someone.

"Mom? It's Michael.""

His mother's voice came through the speaker.

"Michael! Thank goodness. Where have you been?""

"I'm home. Is Emily with you?""

A long silence.

"What?""

"Did Vanessa tell you Emily was staying with a friend?""

My grandmother began crying.

"Michael, I've been trying to reach you for three days! Vanessa told me Emily had been sent away because she was becoming impossible to manage.""

Dad looked at Vanessa.

"She told you what?""

"She said Emily was staying with a friend's family," Grandma continued.

"I asked for the address, but she wouldn't give it to me. I knew something was wrong.""

Dad ended the call.

He looked as if someone had struck him.

Then he turned toward Vanessa.

"You lied to my mother, too?""

Vanessa took a step backward.

"I was trying to keep the peace.""

"By hiding my daughter?""

"I was overwhelmed!""

"Then you should have called me!""

Brittany folded her arms.

"Michael, you're making this a bigger deal than it is.""

Dad turned toward her.

"Go upstairs.""

"But—"

"Now.""

She disappeared.

Dad helped me stand.

My legs trembled so badly that I had to hold his arm.

"Let's get you checked by a doctor.""

As he guided me toward the stairs, I noticed Vanessa watching us.

Her hands were shaking.

Then Dad stopped.

He looked at the hallway.

At the bedroom door.

At the new pink decorations Brittany had already hung outside.

"Wait.""

He turned to Vanessa.

"Where are Laura's things?""

Vanessa went pale.

"What things?""

"My wife's photographs. Her jewelry box. The wardrobe she left Emily.""

"Michael, I moved a few things to make space.""

"Where?""

"Upstairs.""

Dad looked at me.

"Emily, have you seen your mother's belongings?""

I shook my head.

"Her pictures are gone. And the wardrobe is locked.""

Dad's expression hardened.

"Locked?""

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

"It's just storage, Michael. There's nothing important in there.""

"Then why lock it?""

"I misplaced the key.""

From the staircase, Brittany suddenly spoke.

"Mom keeps it in her purse.""

Vanessa spun around.

"Brittany! Go to your room!""

But it was too late.

Dad held out his hand.

"Give me your purse.""

Vanessa clutched it against her chest.

"Michael, please. We should discuss this privately.""

"Give me the purse.""

She hesitated.

Then Dad took out his spare house key and unlocked the bedroom door.

The room looked completely different.

Pink curtains.

A new vanity.

Brittany's clothes scattered across the floor.

My mother's photographs were gone.

The jewelry box was missing.

And the antique wardrobe stood against the far wall with a shiny new padlock.

Dad approached it.

"Where is the key?""

Vanessa whispered, "I don't know.""

Brittany stared at the floor.

"Mom, it's in your purse.""

Dad looked at Vanessa.

Then he opened the purse himself.

Inside, beneath a wallet and a makeup bag, was a small brass key.

He unlocked the wardrobe.

The doors creaked open.

Inside were my mother's jewelry, several family documents, and envelopes addressed to me.

Dad picked up the top envelope.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then all the color drained from his face.

"Vanessa...""

She stepped backward.

"What?""

He turned the letter around.

"Why does this say Emily inherited a trust worth four hundred and eighty thousand dollars?""

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

"What trust?""

Dad looked at the next document.

It was an application to withdraw $180,000.

My name appeared at the bottom.

My signature.

Except I'd never signed it.

Dad slowly raised his eyes toward Vanessa.

"Why is Brittany listed as the recipient?""

Vanessa's lips parted.

No words came out.

Then Dad noticed another page tucked beneath the application.

It was dated just five days earlier.

He read the heading.

His hands began to shake.

"Emily...""

He looked at me.

"Did you ever agree to give up your inheritance?""

I shook my head.

"No, Daddy.""

He turned back to Vanessa.

"Then why did you submit a document claiming she voluntarily surrendered her rights?""

Vanessa suddenly grabbed Brittany's wrist.

"We're leaving.""

Dad stepped in front of the door.

"Nobody is leaving until I know exactly what you've done.""

At that moment, his phone rang.

The caller ID showed the name of my mother's attorney.

Dad answered and put it on speaker.

"Michael," the attorney said urgently, "I'm glad you've finally seen the documents.""

Dad stared at Vanessa.

"What documents?""

"The ones your wife submitted last week. She claims Emily has voluntarily agreed to surrender the remaining inheritance.""

I felt my knees weaken.

Dad grabbed the edge of the wardrobe.

"That's impossible. Emily never signed anything.""

"I suspected that," the attorney replied.

"But there's something else you need to know.""

Dad's voice dropped.

"What?""

A pause.

Then the attorney delivered the words that made Vanessa cover her mouth.

"Your wife also submitted paperwork claiming Emily no longer lives at your address. She requested permission to sell the house Laura legally transferred into Emily's name.""

Dad looked at me.

Then at Vanessa.

And for the first time since I'd known her, my stepmother looked genuinely terrified.

Because Dad had finally discovered the question he needed to ask.

But the attorney wasn't finished.

"Michael, there's one more problem. The signature on those documents isn't just forged.""

Dad tightened his grip on the phone.

"What do you mean?""

The attorney took a breath.

"Someone used a document bearing your signature to authorize the original withdrawal.""

Vanessa began crying.

May you like

And Dad slowly turned toward her.

"Vanessa... what exactly did you make me sign?""
