Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew Too Much

Nobody spoke after seeing the name.

David.

A name from my mother’s past.

A name Vanessa somehow knew.

A name that had appeared in my mother’s diary years ago.

Dad stared at the phone like it was something dangerous.

“Answer it.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Marcus—”

“Answer it.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

She looked around the room.

She knew she had lost control.

For once, nobody was protecting her.

Not even her own sons.

The phone buzzed again.

Tyler looked at his mother.

“Mom, just answer it.””

Vanessa glared at him.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” Tyler said.

“I don’t.””

She slowly picked up the phone.

Then she answered.

“Hello?””

Nobody could hear the voice on the other end.

But we could hear Vanessa’s responses.

“Not now.””

Pause.

“I told you I handled it.””

My stomach dropped.

Dad looked at me.

She wasn’t talking to someone about the ticket.

She wasn’t talking about the vacation.

She was talking about me.

Vanessa walked toward the hallway.

Dad followed.

“Put it on speaker.””

“No.””

“Put it on speaker.””

She ignored him.

Then the person on the phone said something that made Vanessa freeze.

Her face lost all color.

“What do you mean he knows?””

Dad stopped.

He looked at me.

Then at her.

“Who knows what?””

Vanessa hung up.

The silence afterward was terrifying.

Dad slowly took the phone from her hand.

This time, she didn’t fight.

He opened the messages.

There were dozens.

Between Vanessa and David.

My hands shook as I read the screen.

*Vanessa:* “The trip is the easiest way. Once they leave, I can finish everything.””

Another message.

*David:* “You’re sure Marcus won’t find the documents?””

*Vanessa:* “He trusts me.””

I felt sick.

Dad kept scrolling.

Then he stopped.

A message from two days earlier.

*David:* “Maya is asking questions. Be careful.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew I was looking for him.””

She didn’t respond.

Dad’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“You used my daughter.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something besides anger in her eyes.

Fear.

“Maya, your mother left something behind.””

My heart started racing.

“What?””

“Something important.””

Dad stepped forward.

“What did my wife leave?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“A secret.””

I almost laughed.

After everything she had done, she wanted us to believe she was protecting us?

“What secret?””

Vanessa looked at the photo.

Then at me.

“Your mother knew she was dying.””

Dad’s expression changed.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“She made plans.””

I felt a chill.

“What kind of plans?””

Vanessa looked at Dad.

“She didn’t trust everyone around her.””

The words hung in the air.

Dad looked hurt.

“Are you saying she didn’t trust me?””

“I’m saying she knew things you didn’t.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“Why do you know all this?””

She didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Dad grabbed his coat.

“We’re leaving.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You need to hear the truth.””

“No.””

“You deserve to know what your wife was hiding.””

Dad stopped.

Slowly turned around.

“What did my wife hide?””

Vanessa looked at me.

Then she said:

“She had another bank account.””

My breath caught.

Dad stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“She opened it before she died.””

“Why?””

Vanessa’s voice dropped.

“Because she was afraid someone would try to take Maya away.””

My heart pounded.

Dad looked at me.

Then at Vanessa.

“Who?””

Vanessa reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small key.

A metal key.

Old.

Worn.

She placed it on the table.

“Your wife left this for David.””

Dad picked it up.

“Where does it go?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And her next words changed everything.

“It opens a safety deposit box.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Dad tightened his grip around the key.

“What’s inside?””

May you like

Vanessa stared directly at me.

“Proof that someone in this family has been lying for years.””
