Chapter 5: The Stranger From My Mother’s Past
The photograph stayed on the table between us.
A single piece of paper.
A single moment frozen in time.
But somehow, it felt like it had the power to destroy everything.
Dad looked at me.
“Maya, answer me.””
I wanted to.
I really wanted to.
But my mind was racing.
“I don’t know who that is.””
Vanessa immediately smiled.
“There it is.””
Dad looked at her.
“What?””
“The lie.””
My face burned.
“I’m not lying.””
“You expect us to believe you just happened to be standing next to a stranger connected to your mother?””
Dad turned toward Vanessa.
“Stop.””
“No, Marcus. You deserve to know.””
She pointed at the picture.
“Your daughter has been searching for him.””
I looked at her.
“How do you know that?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
And that question bothered me more than anything.
Because she shouldn’t have known.
Dad noticed too.
“How did you get this photo?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Just for a second.
But Dad saw it.
“Where did you get it?””
She looked away.
“I found it.””
“Where?””
Silence.
Dad stepped closer.
“You keep saying that word.””
His voice became quiet.
“But every time you ‘find’ something, it’s something you had no right to access.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
For the first time, she looked nervous.
I took the photo from the table.
I studied it.
The man beside me was older, maybe in his forties.
Dark hair.
Brown eyes.
A familiar expression.
Then I remembered.
Two months earlier, I had found my mother’s old journal while looking for a photo album.
Most of it was normal.
Recipes.
Memories.
Notes about my childhood.
But one page caught my attention.
It had only one sentence.
“If anything happens to me, David deserves to know the truth.””
I never understood it.
I never knew who David was.
I looked at Dad.
“Do you know someone named David?””
His expression changed instantly.
That scared me.
Because Dad always had an answer.
But this time, he didn’t.
“Dad?””
He sat down slowly.
“I knew a David.””
Vanessa looked surprised.
“You never told me that.””
Dad ignored her.
“He was your mother’s friend.””
“Just a friend?””
Dad looked uncomfortable.
“I don’t know.””
My heart sank.
“You don’t know?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Your mother and I were having problems before she got sick.””
I felt like the floor moved beneath me.
“What?””
Dad looked at me.
“Maya…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“You never told me.””
“I didn’t want you carrying adult problems.””
“Was Mom unhappy?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I don’t know.””
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“Maybe it’s time she knew everything.””
Dad turned sharply.
“You don’t get to pretend you care about honesty.””
Vanessa flinched.
But she continued.
“David contacted me months ago.””
The room froze.
Dad stared.
“What?””
I felt my heart stop.
“You knew him?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She smiled slightly.
“Because he wanted to find you.””
Dad’s face turned pale.
“Why would he contact you?””
“Because I was easier to reach.””
“That makes no sense.””
Vanessa shrugged.
“He knew you wouldn’t listen.””
Dad stood.
“Give me your phone.””
“No.””
“Vanessa.””
“No.””
The way she refused told us everything.
Dad reached out.
She stepped back.
“What are you hiding?””
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Tyler walked into the room.
“Mom?””
She looked at him.
“Go upstairs.””
“No.””
His voice was different now.
He wasn’t scared.
He was angry.
“I’m tired of everyone lying.””
Brandon appeared behind him.
“What is happening?””
Tyler looked at his mother.
“Who is David?””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
Then her phone buzzed.
She looked down.
And her expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
Dad noticed.
“Who was that?””
She didn’t answer.
He took one step closer.
“Who was that message from?””
Vanessa slowly locked the screen.
“It doesn’t matter.””
Dad looked at the phone.
Then at her.
“It matters.””
Another buzz came.
This time, the screen lit up.
A name appeared.
Everyone saw it.
*David.*
Dad went completely still.

And then he whispered:
“Why is my wife texting the man my first wife trusted?””
