Chapter 8: The Money My Father Never Received
Dad reached for the phone.
Vanessa tried to pull it away, but he caught it before she could end the call.
"Richard, what money are you talking about?""
The voice on the other end remained calm.
"Before I explain, David, I need you to understand that I didn't know Vanessa had submitted a withdrawal request until the foundation contacted me.""
Dad's jaw tightened.
"You expect me to believe that?""
"No. I expect you to check the records.""
"Then tell me what records.""
Richard paused.
"Three months before your wedding, Vanessa contacted the Eleanor Foundation claiming she was your authorized representative. She requested an advance against a family education grant.""
Dad looked at Vanessa.
"What grant?""
She shook her head frantically.
Richard continued.
"The foundation had established a trust for Mia's education. Vanessa asked whether the funds could be released early to cover expenses related to your new household.""
Dad's face darkened.
"I never authorized that.""
"I know.""
"How much?""
"Forty thousand dollars.""
I felt my stomach drop.
Forty thousand dollars.
That was more money than Dad had saved in years.
Vanessa immediately protested.
"It wasn't like that!""
Dad turned toward her.
"Then explain it.""
She lifted her hands.
"I needed money for the move. The wedding. The house. Everything cost more than I expected.""
"You told me your savings covered those expenses.""
"They did initially!""
"And the forty thousand dollars?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"I borrowed it.""
"From a trust established for Mia?""
"She's my daughter!""
"That money was meant for her education!""
"And I was trying to build her a home!""
Dad stared at her in disbelief.
Richard's voice interrupted.
"David, there's more. The foundation approved a limited advance under the condition that the money be repaid before Mia began college. The request was submitted under your name because Vanessa represented that you had agreed to guarantee the repayment.""
Dad's hand tightened around the phone.
"I never agreed to anything.""
"That's why I'm calling.""
Vanessa lunged for the phone.
"Richard, stop!""
Dad moved away.
"No. You wanted to keep this family together through lies. Now we're going to hear the truth.""
Richard continued.
"When the repayment deadline approached, Vanessa contacted the foundation again. She claimed that Mia's educational plans had changed and requested an extension.""
"That was months ago," Dad said.
"Yes. Then Aaliyah received the merit scholarship. Vanessa became concerned that the foundation would review the family accounts before finalizing the awards.""
I felt cold all over.
"Because she hadn't repaid the money?"" I asked.
"Correct," Richard replied.
"And because the scholarship review would have brought the original advance to the attention of the foundation's oversight committee.""
Dad stared at Vanessa.
"So you tried to stop Aaliyah from attending Westbridge because you were afraid they'd investigate you.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I was trying to protect Mia's trust!""
"By stealing my daughter's scholarship?""
"I didn't steal it!""
"You hid the letters!""
"I panicked!""
"You forged her signature!""
Vanessa covered her face.
"I thought if Aaliyah stayed home, I could repay the money before anyone noticed. Then the trust would be restored, and Mia could go to college without anyone knowing what happened.""
I struggled to understand how someone could turn so many lives upside down to conceal one lie.
"You could have asked Dad for help," I said.
Vanessa looked at me bitterly.
"And have him discover that I took money from Mia's trust? You think he would have forgiven me?""
"No," I answered.
"But at least I would still have my future.""
Her face crumpled.
For a moment, I saw the woman who had smiled at Dad on their wedding day, who had promised to love both his daughter and her own.
Then I remembered my ruined dress.
The hidden letters.
The forged signature.
Whatever fear she had felt, she had chosen to make me pay for it.
Dad spoke into the phone.
"Richard, why didn't you tell me any of this when you first discovered the problem?""
"I tried contacting you six months ago. Your number had changed, and Vanessa told me you didn't want anything to do with me.""
Dad closed his eyes.
"She told me you were the one who refused to speak to me.""
"I know.""
The two men fell silent.
I realized that Vanessa hadn't just manipulated me.
She had isolated Dad from his former partner, hidden financial problems, and built an entire household around information she controlled.
Richard continued.
"I didn't know about the marriage until last year. By then, Vanessa had convinced me that you knew everything about the trust. When Aaliyah's scholarship application came through, I asked the foundation to verify that the award was legitimate.""
"Why?"" Dad asked.
"Because I recognized your daughter's name. I knew Vanessa had a history of making decisions on Mia's behalf, and I wanted to ensure the scholarship wasn't being used to cover the outstanding advance.""
I looked at Dad.
"Did he know me when I was little?""
Richard answered before Dad could.
"I met you several times when you were a child. You probably wouldn't remember me.""
I barely did.
There was a vague memory of a tall man laughing with Dad in our old backyard, holding a paper plate piled with barbecue ribs.
I had been about six.
"Why did you disappear?"" I asked.
Richard sighed.
"Your father and I had a serious business dispute. We both made mistakes. I left Atlanta for a while, and by the time I returned, Vanessa and I had already lost contact.""
Dad's face tightened.
"We'll discuss that another time.""
"Agreed.""
Dad took a breath.
"What happens now?""
"The foundation has suspended further payments from Mia's trust until the advance is reconciled. They also want an independent review of Aaliyah's scholarship withdrawal.""
"Will my daughter lose her scholarship because of this?""
"No," Richard said firmly.
"The scholarship was awarded on merit. Vanessa's actions don't change Aaliyah's academic achievements.""
I closed my eyes.
For the first time all day, I could breathe.
Richard continued.
"I've also asked the foundation to arrange an emergency meeting. I want both girls to have a fair chance at their futures.""
Vanessa let out a bitter laugh.
"How noble of you, Richard. You disappear for seventeen years, and now you want to play father of the year.""
His voice hardened.
"I never stopped supporting Mia financially. You told me she didn't want contact with me.""
Mia stood motionless beside the stairs.
"You mean you wanted to know me?"" she whispered.
Richard heard her.
"Of course I did, Mia.""
She began crying.
"Mom said you didn't care.""
"I sent letters. I sent birthday cards. I asked to speak with you.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Those letters were inappropriate. I was protecting her.""
"From her own father?"" Richard asked.
Mia looked at her mother with an expression I had never seen before.
Betrayal.
Dad slowly lowered the phone.
"Vanessa, pack your belongings. You're leaving tonight.""
She stared at him.
"You can't be serious.""
"I've never been more serious.""
"You would throw away our marriage because of a financial misunderstanding?""
Dad shook his head.
"No. I'm ending this because you have lied to me, manipulated my daughter, concealed money, and forged a document to control her future.""
Vanessa's face twisted.
"You'll regret choosing her over me.""
Dad answered without hesitation.
"I regret not seeing what you were doing sooner.""
Vanessa grabbed her suitcase and stormed toward the door.
Mia remained behind.
"Mom?""
Vanessa stopped.
"Are you coming?""
Mia looked at her mother, then at Dad.
Then she asked the question that changed the direction of the entire evening.
"Did you really hide Dad's letters from me?""
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Mia's eyes filled with tears.
"Did you?""
Vanessa looked away.
May you like
Mia took one step backward.
And for the first time in her life, she refused to follow her mother.
