Chapter 11: The Truth My Mother Took to Her Grave

I read the sentence again.

There is one thing your father has never been told about the day I died.

The words blurred.

Dad sat beside me, his face pale.

"What does it say, sweetheart?""

I couldn't answer.

Eleanor reached across the table and gently touched the edge of the letter.

"Take your time.""

I forced myself to continue.

I wanted to tell your father everything. I wanted to explain why I had been frightened, why I had started saving money in secret, and why I asked Eleanor to help secure your future.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

But I was afraid that if I told him, he would try to fix everything himself, and that could put him in danger too.

I stopped reading.

Dad's breathing had changed.

"Put me in danger from whom?"" he asked.

Eleanor looked down.

"Your mother never gave me every detail.""

"Then what do you know?""

She folded her hands.

"Before your mother became ill, she discovered that someone had been accessing financial records connected to your father's business. She suspected money was being moved without his knowledge.""

Dad stared at her.

"That was Richard's company.""

"Yes.""

"But Richard and I had already separated by then.""

Eleanor nodded.

"Your mother believed the problem had started before the separation.""

Dad leaned back.

For years, he had believed Richard's business decisions had caused the financial collapse that ended their partnership. He had lost contracts, taken on debt, and spent months trying to rebuild his company.

He had never mentioned any of it to me in detail.

Now, as I watched him, I realized he was reconsidering an entire chapter of his life.

"Why didn't you tell me this before?"" he asked Eleanor.

"Because I had no proof. Your wife asked me to protect Aaliyah, not to investigate your business.""

Dad's jaw tightened.

"And Vanessa?""

Eleanor looked at him carefully.

"Vanessa approached the foundation shortly after she married you. She claimed she was helping Aaliyah prepare for college and wanted information about the scholarship program.""

"She never told me that.""

"I didn't know she had any intention of interfering with the award. When Aaliyah's withdrawal appeared, I asked the foundation to investigate.""

I looked back at my mother's letter.

There were several more paragraphs, but one line caught my eye.

If someone tells you that loving your family means sacrificing your future, remember that love does not ask you to disappear.

I began crying.

I could almost hear my mother's voice saying those words.

She used to sit on the edge of my bed and brush my hair away from my face when I was upset. She always told me that being a good daughter didn't mean agreeing with everyone.

It meant being honest, even when honesty was uncomfortable.

I had forgotten how much I needed to hear that.

Dad wrapped an arm around my shoulders.

"I'm sorry she had to carry all of this alone.""

I leaned against him.

"She was trying to protect us.""

Eleanor nodded.

"She was.""

Mia had been silent throughout the conversation. Now she looked up.

"Does this mean my mother knew about what happened?""

Eleanor considered the question.

"I can't tell you what Vanessa knew at the time. But I can tell you that your mother contacted the foundation before your mother—"

She stopped, correcting herself.

"Before Vanessa contacted us about your trust.""

Mia looked confused.

"What does that mean?""

"It means we need to examine the financial records before drawing conclusions.""

Dad turned toward Michael.

"Can the university help us get those records?""

Michael shook his head.

"The foundation's financial review is separate from the admissions process. But Eleanor has authorized an independent audit of the disputed accounts.""

Eleanor nodded.

"I have already instructed our attorneys to preserve every relevant document.""

Dad looked relieved.

"Thank you.""

I folded my mother's letter carefully and placed it inside the envelope.

Then Eleanor slid another document across the table.

"This is the confirmation of your scholarship award. It remains reserved pending completion of the withdrawal review. Based on what we've established today, I expect the university to restore it.""

I stared at the paper.

A full four-year scholarship.

My future, still within reach.

"Thank you," I whispered.

Eleanor smiled.

"Your mother would be proud of you.""

For the first time in days, I felt something like hope.

Then Eleanor opened a second folder.

"There is one more matter we need to discuss.""

Dad stiffened.

"What now?""

"The foundation received a request from Vanessa to change the designated recipient of a separate educational payment.""

Mia went rigid.

"Mine?""

Eleanor nodded.

"Your trust was established by your biological father. It was intended to support your education and living expenses. The request Vanessa submitted would have transferred control of the remaining funds to a joint account.""

Mia's face drained of color.

"Why would she do that?""

"That is what the audit is intended to determine.""

Dad looked furious.

"How much money is left in the trust?""

Eleanor checked the document.

"Approximately sixty-eight thousand dollars.""

Mia covered her mouth.

"Sixty-eight thousand?""

She looked at Dad.

"Mom told me the money was gone. She said she'd spent it on our house and that I'd have to work if I wanted to go to college.""

Dad's expression hardened.

"Did you know she had taken money from your trust before?""

Mia nodded slowly.

"She said it was a loan. She promised she'd pay it back.""

Eleanor closed the folder.

"The foundation's preliminary review indicates that some of the funds were used for household expenses. We don't yet know whether the withdrawals were authorized under the trust's terms.""

Mia began crying.

"I believed her.""

I looked at her.

Despite everything she had done to me, I understood that particular pain.

The realization that someone you trusted had used your love as permission to deceive you.

Dad reached for Mia's hand.

"We'll get answers.""

She shook her head.

"What if there's nothing left?""

"Then we'll find out what happened.""

For a moment, Mia looked at me.

"I really thought Mom was doing everything for me.""

I didn't know what to say.

Perhaps Vanessa had convinced herself that every selfish decision was an act of love.

Perhaps she had started with good intentions and allowed fear to turn into something uglier.

But none of that could undo what she had done.

Eleanor gathered the documents.

"The audit will take time. In the meantime, Aaliyah's scholarship dispute will proceed separately. I don't want her education held hostage by a financial investigation.""

I nodded gratefully.

Then Michael's phone rang.

He answered, listened, and slowly looked up.

"Ms. Whitmore, the foundation's legal team has just received an urgent message from its bank.""

Eleanor's expression tightened.

"What kind of message?""

Michael covered the receiver.

"Someone attempted to transfer the remaining money in Mia's educational trust this morning.""

Mia stood up so quickly that her chair scraped across the floor.

"Who?""

Michael listened again.

Then he answered in a voice barely above a whisper.

"The transfer was initiated from an account belonging to Vanessa Brooks.""

Dad rose.

"Can the bank stop it?""

Michael nodded slowly.

"They've frozen the transaction pending verification.""

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"Then we need to act immediately.""

I looked at Mia.

She was staring at the floor, tears running silently down her face.

Her mother had hidden my college acceptance letter, forged my signature, and tried to keep me from leaving home.

Now, apparently, she had tried to take the money meant for her own daughter.

May you like

But the worst part was still ahead.

Because when Dad asked the bank for the destination account, the name attached to it would reveal that Vanessa hadn't been acting alone.
