Chapter 13: The Secret Behind My Birth

My father couldn't take his eyes off the photograph.

Three newborn babies.

Three names.

And a date written beneath them.

The date was seventeen years earlier.

"Isabelle," Dad whispered, "what does this mean?""

Mom held the photograph against her chest.

Her hands were trembling.

"Richard, I need you to sit down.""

He pulled a chair beside her.

I remained standing, unable to understand why my birth had suddenly become part of an eight-year conspiracy.

Mom looked at me.

"Maya, sweetheart, when I met your father, I was working as a nurse at St. Mary's Hospital.""

I nodded.

She continued.

"One night, a woman arrived in labor. She had no family with her. Her name was Margaret Carter.""

Dad's head snapped up.

"Margaret?""

"Yes.""

I looked between them.

"Who was Margaret Carter?""

Mom answered quietly.

"Daniel's first wife.""

Dad stood.

"Daniel was married before?""

"For a short time. They separated before he met Nicole. Margaret gave birth to twins that night.""

I stared at the photograph.

Two babies were wrapped in white blankets.

A third baby lay beside them.

"Who was the third baby?""

Mom closed her eyes.

"You.""

The room went silent.

Dad shook his head.

"That's impossible. Maya was born to us.""

"She was raised by you, Richard. But the truth is more complicated.""

Mom explained that Margaret had suffered severe complications during delivery. One of the twins needed immediate medical attention, and the hospital had accidentally mixed up several identification bracelets during an emergency transfer.

The third baby was mine.

But nobody had known that at first.

"When I discovered the mistake," Mom continued, "I reported it. The hospital began an investigation.""

Dad leaned forward.

"What did Daniel have to do with it?""

"Everything.""

Mom explained that Daniel had been informed about the hospital error.

He had demanded that the records be changed.

He wanted to know which baby was biologically his.

I felt sick.

"Why?""

Mom looked at me.

"Because Daniel had discovered that Margaret's family owned a substantial estate. He believed that if one of the twins disappeared from the official records, he could eventually control the inheritance.""

Dad stared at her.

"And Maya?""

"Daniel believed she was the child who had been mistakenly registered as Margaret's second twin.""

"But she's our daughter," Dad said.

Mom reached for his hand.

"Richard, biologically, she is.""

Dad looked confused.

Mom continued.

"I was pregnant with Maya. You are her biological father. The hospital error involved the other babies, but Daniel used the confusion to create false records and claim rights over the children.""

I struggled to follow.

"So I'm not one of Daniel's twins?""

"No, sweetheart. You're my daughter. You're Richard's daughter. The third baby in that photograph is not you.""

She pointed to the three names.

"The photograph was taken during the hospital investigation. Those were the three babies involved in the identification confusion, including you.""

Dad stared at the photograph.

"Then why did Daniel keep this secret?""

"Because the original hospital records proved that he had falsified documents. He used the confusion to gain access to Margaret's inheritance and later manipulated the records surrounding your birth.""

Mom reached for another document.

It was a copy of my original birth registration.

Richard Bennett was listed as my father.

Isabelle Bennett was listed as my mother.

There was no ambiguity.

I felt my knees weaken.

"Then what did you mean when you said there was something about my biological father Dad didn't know?""

Mom looked at Rebecca.

Rebecca opened the folder and removed a second document.

"This isn't a birth certificate," she explained.

"It's an amended hospital record.""

Dad read it.

Then his face turned white.

The document showed that Daniel had submitted a false claim identifying himself as my biological father.

But the claim had been rejected.

"Daniel tried to make himself my father?"" I whispered.

Mom nodded.

"He wanted legal access to your inheritance. He believed that if he could establish a parental connection, he could challenge the trust.""

Dad crushed the paper in his fist.

"That bastard.""

Mom looked toward the window.

"He wasn't acting alone.""

Dad turned.

"What?""

She pointed to the bottom of the document.

There were two witness signatures.

One belonged to Daniel.

The other belonged to Nicole.

Dad stared at it.

"Nicole was involved before she married me?""

Mom nodded.

"She was Daniel's partner in the scheme from the beginning.""

I remembered her words.

Everything had always been about me.

The inheritance.

The documents.

The pregnancy accusation.

It had all been part of the same plan.

Then Mom reached into the folder and removed another envelope.

"This is the reason Daniel was so desperate to keep me away from you.""

She handed it to Dad.

Inside was a hospital laboratory report.

Dad read the first page.

Then the second.

His hands began shaking.

"Isabelle...""

"What?"" I asked.

He couldn't answer.

Mom finally spoke.

"Daniel's twin children were never registered correctly. One of them was sent home with the wrong family. The other was raised under a different identity.""

I stared at her.

"Where are they now?""

Mom looked directly at me.

"One of them is living in your house.""

My breath caught.

Dad slowly turned toward the door.

"Ethan?""

Mom nodded.

"Your little brother is Daniel's biological son.""

I felt the room spin.

The boy who had risked everything to protect me was the very child Daniel had been trying to control.

May you like

Then Mom whispered:

"And Nicole knows.""
