Chapter 1: The Pregnancy Test

"You're seventeen, Maya! How could you bring this kind of shame into your father's house?""

My stepmother, Nicole, threw a positive pregnancy test across the kitchen table.

It struck my water bottle, bounced against my math textbook, and landed inches from my hand.

I stared at it.

Two pink lines.

For a moment, I couldn't understand what I was looking at.

Then I looked at Nicole.

"That's not mine.""

Nicole planted both hands on the table. Her perfectly manicured nails clicked against the wood.

"Don't insult my intelligence. I found it beside your makeup bag.""

"Dad!"" I turned toward my father.

"I swear I've never seen that thing before!""

Richard Bennett stood near the refrigerator, still wearing his work shirt. His tie hung loose around his neck, and exhaustion lined his face.

He looked at the test.

Then at me.

"Maya, sweetheart, please tell me there's an explanation.""

"There is! She's lying!""

Nicole gave a dramatic sigh.

"Richard, I tried to give her privacy. I even offered to take her to a clinic. But she keeps denying everything.""

"Because it's not true!"" I shouted.

Nicole opened the refrigerator, took out a bottle of sparkling water, and poured herself a glass.

"At seventeen, I thought I knew everything too. Unfortunately, actions have consequences.""

I felt my cheeks burn.

My mother, Isabelle, had been dead for eight years. Since then, Nicole had made it her personal mission to remind me that I was lucky she had taken me in.

She controlled what I wore, who I visited, and how long I spoke to my father's relatives.

Whenever I complained, she told Dad I was still struggling with my mother's death.

And Dad believed her.

"Dad, please," I whispered.

"You know me.""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Maya, I need you to be honest.""

"I am being honest!""

Nicole placed her glass down.

"Maybe if you spent less time with those boys at school and more time respecting this family, we wouldn't be having this conversation.""

"Which boys?"" I demanded.

"You don't even know my friends!""

"Enough," Dad said quietly.

That one word hurt more than Nicole's accusations.

I pushed my chair back.

"Fine. Search my room. Search my backpack.

Call my school. Do whatever you want. But don't accuse me of something I didn't do.""

Nicole's expression changed.

For half a second, her eyes flickered toward the hallway.

Then she smiled.

"There's no need to become hysterical.""

I noticed something strange.

She wasn't angry anymore.

She looked satisfied.

As though everything was going exactly as planned.

At the kitchen table, my eight-year-old brother, Ethan, slowly raised his head from his homework.

"Mommy?""

Nicole turned.

"What, Ethan?""

"Why are you blaming Maya?""

Her smile disappeared.

"Because this is an adult conversation. Finish your homework.""

"But I saw you buy that thing.""

Nobody moved.

Dad straightened.

"What thing, buddy?""

Ethan pointed at the pregnancy test.

"The little white stick. Mommy bought it yesterday when we went shopping. It was in the grocery bag with my cereal.""

Nicole's glass stopped halfway to her mouth.

"That's enough, Ethan.""

"But—"

"Go upstairs.""

Dad walked toward the kitchen counter and picked up the receipt beside Nicole's purse.

He read it once.

Then again.

"Pregnancy test," he said slowly.

"Fourteen dollars and ninety-nine cents. Yesterday at 4:37 p.m.""

Nicole swallowed.

"Richard, I buy plenty of things. That doesn't mean—"

"Did you buy this?""

She lowered her voice.

"You're embarrassing me in front of the children.""

Dad stared at her.

"Answer the question.""

Ethan suddenly reached for his school backpack.

"There's something else, Daddy.""

Nicole's face went white.

"Ethan, put your backpack away.""

He ignored her and pulled out a white envelope.

"Mommy told me to hide this because you weren't supposed to see it.""

Nicole lunged across the table.

"Give me that!""

Dad moved faster.

He stepped between Nicole and Ethan, catching her wrist before she could grab the envelope.

"Don't touch him.""

"Dad?"" Ethan whispered.

"You're okay, buddy.""

Dad took the envelope and opened it.

Inside was a prenatal appointment confirmation.

His eyes moved across the paper.

Patient: Nicole Bennett.

Appointment: Friday, 9:30 a.m.

Emergency Contact: Daniel Carter.

Dad read the last name twice.

Daniel Carter.

His younger brother.

The man who came to our house every Sunday.

The man who had helped Dad repair our roof, attended Ethan's school events, and called me his favorite niece.

Dad's fingers tightened around the paper.

"Why is my brother listed as your emergency contact?""

Nicole started crying.

Not the quiet kind.

She covered her mouth and shook her head as though Dad had just accused her of something unimaginable.

"Richard, please. Let me explain.""

"Why is Daniel your emergency contact?""

Ethan looked between them.

Then he whispered something that made my father's face lose every trace of color.

"Because Uncle Daniel comes here when you're at work.""

Dad turned toward him.

"What?""

Ethan nodded.

"Sometimes Mommy tells me to stay in my room. But Uncle Daniel brings her flowers, and they close the bedroom door.""

Nicole backed away.

"Ethan, you're confused.""

But Ethan shook his head.

"No, Mommy. I remember.""

Dad looked down at the appointment confirmation.

Then he looked at his wife.

"How long has this been going on?""

Nicole opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, Ethan reached deeper into his backpack.

"Daddy, there's another thing.""

He pulled out a small black phone.

"I recorded them because they were saying bad things about Maya.""

Nicole screamed.

"ETHAN! GIVE ME THAT PHONE!""

And for the first time in eight years, I saw my stepmother genuinely afraid.
