Chapter 2: The Video That Changed Everything
The wedding coordinator, Melissa, arrived moments later with a tablet in her hands.
“I heard shouting,” she said carefully.
“I checked the security feed.””
Jessica immediately stepped forward.
“Give me that.””
Melissa pulled the tablet closer.
“Why?””
“Because this is private.””
“No,” I said quietly.
“It’s evidence.””
Daniel looked between us.
“Mom…”
I looked at him.
For years, I had defended him.
Today, I had to defend myself.
“Let the video play.””
Jessica’s face tightened.
“Daniel, you’re really going to believe her over me?””
He didn’t answer.
That hesitation hurt her.
Melissa tapped the screen.
The video appeared.
There we were.
The bridal suite.
The mirror.
The dress.
The truth.
Nobody spoke as Jessica watched herself walk toward the mirror alone.
Then everyone watched as she grabbed the buttons.
One by one.
RIP.
RIP.
RIP.
The color drained from Daniel’s face.
“That’s impossible,” he whispered.
Jessica shook her head quickly.
“It’s edited.””
Melissa frowned.
“The footage is directly from the security system.””
Daniel looked at his bride.
“Jessica…”
“She’s lying!”” Jessica snapped.
Her reaction was too fast.
Too desperate.
The video continued.
It showed Jessica scratching her own shoulder.
Then screaming.
Then Daniel rushing in.
Then the slap.
My eyes burned.
Not because of the pain.
Because I saw the exact moment my son believed a stranger over his own mother.
Melissa lowered the volume.
But the video wasn’t finished.
“There’s more,” she said.
Jessica stepped backward.
“No.””
Daniel turned.
“No?””
Melissa pressed play.
The footage switched angles.
Jessica was sitting alone in the room twenty minutes earlier.
Talking on her phone.
Her voice filled the suite.
“Don’t worry. After today, Daniel will hate his mother forever.””
Everyone froze.
Jessica’s breathing became uneven.
On the recording, she laughed.
“She thinks she still has power over him.””
Daniel stared at the screen.
His face slowly changed.
Confusion.
Then anger.
Then disbelief.
The recording continued.
“And once he signs those papers after the honeymoon, everything will finally belong to us.””
Daniel looked at Jessica.
“What papers?””
She didn’t answer.
“Jessica, what papers?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I looked at my son.
“Daniel, I told you something was wrong.””
He didn’t respond.
His eyes stayed locked on the screen.
Then Melissa paused the video.
“There’s one more thing.””
She zoomed in on Jessica’s phone.
The reflection in the mirror showed the caller’s name.
Daniel leaned closer.
His face suddenly went completely white.
“No…”
I stepped toward him.
“What is it?””
He didn’t answer.
He looked at Jessica.
“Who were you talking to?””
Jessica shook her head.
“Daniel, please listen—”
“WHO?””
The room trembled with his voice.
Jessica’s eyes filled with tears.
But this time, nobody moved to comfort her.
Melissa pointed at the screen.
“The caller ID was visible for a few seconds.””
Daniel looked again.
The name was clear.
A name he had not heard in twenty years.
A name that belonged to someone we buried long ago.
His father.
Michael Miller.
Daniel stumbled backward.
“My father is dead.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Jessica whispered:
“Daniel, I can explain.””
But my son wasn’t looking at her anymore.
He was looking at me.
And I realized he finally understood something I had known from the beginning.

The woman standing beside him wasn’t just trying to destroy our relationship.
She had a much bigger plan.
