Chapter 10: The Message From the Dead

Nobody breathed.

Nobody moved.

Sarah’s voice continued to echo through the bridal suite.

“Your mother is in danger.””

Daniel held the phone with both hands, staring at it like it was something impossible.

Something that should not exist.

Michael stepped forward.

“Turn it off.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know who sent that.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“It says Sarah.””

Michael’s face tightened.

“That doesn’t mean it’s Sarah.””

I stepped closer.

“Let him listen.””

Michael looked at me.

“Elizabeth—”

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

For twenty years, I had been quiet.

I had swallowed my anger.

I had protected secrets.

But not anymore.

“My son deserves the truth.””

Daniel pressed play again.

The recording continued.

“If you are hearing this, it means I failed.””

Sarah’s voice trembled.

“But I need you to know something. Elizabeth did not steal you from me.””

I covered my mouth.

Tears filled my eyes.

Daniel looked at me.

The recording continued.

“She saved you.””

A silence followed.

Then Sarah whispered:

“She was the only person I trusted.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The pain on his face was almost unbearable.

Because in a single moment, he realized the person he had doubted his entire life had been protecting him all along.

But the message wasn’t finished.

“Someone will try to convince you that Elizabeth betrayed me.””

Sarah paused.

“Do not believe them.””

Michael’s face became unreadable.

Daniel noticed.

“You knew about this.””

Michael didn’t answer.

“You knew.””

“I knew Sarah recorded something.””

“But you never told me?””

Michael looked away.

“I didn’t know where the recording was.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Of course.””

He looked around the room.

“Everyone knew pieces of my life except me.””

I stepped toward him.

“Daniel…”

He held up his hand.

Not angrily.

Just overwhelmed.

“I need to hear the rest.””

The recording continued.

“Daniel, your birth father left you something.””

Michael looked up.

Sarah’s voice became softer.

“But it was never about money.””

The room became still.

“It was about proof.””

Daniel frowned.

“Proof of what?””

The recording continued.

“Proof that someone inside Collins Medical destroyed my family.””

Michael’s expression changed.

And for the first time, I saw fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Daniel noticed too.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Michael didn’t respond.

Sarah’s voice continued.

“Thomas was not the person everyone believed he was.””

Daniel looked at me.

Then at Michael.

The same sentence.

The same warning.

The same mystery.

“Your grandfather made sure the truth disappeared.””

Michael whispered:

“Enough.””

Daniel turned.

“Why are you scared?””

“I’m not.””

“You are.””

Michael stepped back.

“This message was recorded twenty years ago. You don’t know what happened after.””

Daniel stared.

“Then explain.””

Michael opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was the answer.

The recording continued.

“The person who hurt me will come after Daniel.””

Sarah’s breathing became uneven.

“Please remember this.””

A pause.

Then:

“Trust the woman who raised you.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

The silence was heavier than before.

Then Daniel looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

The words nearly broke me.

Not because I wanted an apology.

Because I heard the little boy inside the man.

I walked toward him.

“I never needed you to choose me.””

His eyes filled.

“I should have.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I touched his face gently.

“I just needed you to know I never stopped choosing you.””

For a moment, we stood there.

Mother and son.

Not by blood.

By everything that mattered.

Then a loud crash came from outside.

Everyone turned.

Melissa looked toward the door.

“What was that?””

Daniel immediately moved.

“I’ll check.””

“No,” Michael said.

Everyone looked at him.

Michael’s face was pale.

“You don’t understand.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

Michael looked toward the hallway.

“They know.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Michael didn’t answer.

Then the lights went out.

The bridal suite fell into darkness.

Someone screamed outside.

A second later, the emergency lights flickered on.

And lying on the floor outside the door was an envelope.

Daniel picked it up.

May you like

There was only one sentence written on the front.

*STOP DIGGING, OR YOUR MOTHER WILL BE NEXT.*
