Chapter 9: The Unexpected Visitor

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because of the message.

Because of the name that never appeared.

The stranger wanted me afraid.

They wanted me guessing.

And I refused to let someone else control my thoughts.

The next morning, I called Thomas.

“I received a strange message.””

He listened carefully.

“Did you respond?””

“No.””

“Good.””

“Can you find out who sent it?””

“We’ll look into it.””

I hesitated.

“Thomas?””

“Yes?””

“Did Richard ever mention being worried about someone specific?””

There was a long pause.

That pause told me something.

“You know something.””

Thomas sighed.

“Evelyn, Richard was careful with his words.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

He paused.

“He was concerned about influence.””

“Influence?””

“Someone convincing others to make decisions they normally wouldn’t make.””

I looked at the wall.

Daniel.

Valerie.

The trust.

The restaurant.

Everything connected.

That afternoon, someone knocked on my door.

I expected Daniel.

Instead, I found Valerie.

She stood there holding a small gift bag.

The same kind of bag I had carried to the restaurant.

The irony wasn’t lost on me.

“Evelyn.””

I didn’t invite her in.

“What do you want?””

Her smile was softer than usual.

“I wanted to apologize.””

“For what?””

She looked down.

“For the dinner.””

I waited.

She continued.

“I handled things badly.””

“Badly?””

“Yes.””

I looked at her.

“You lied.””

Her face tightened.

“I made a mistake.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“A mistake is forgetting someone’s birthday.””

I stepped closer.

“A mistake is ordering the wrong meal.””

I looked directly at her.

“Planning an entire evening where I arrive after everyone eats is a choice.””

She had no response.

For once.

Valerie looked uncomfortable.

Then she reached into the gift bag.

“I brought you something.””

I didn’t move.

“What is it?””

“A thank-you gift.””

“For what?””

She forced a smile.

“For everything you’ve done.””

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Instead, I said:

“Why now?””

She froze.

“What?””

“Why are you thanking me now?””

Her eyes moved away.

And there it was.

The answer.

Not in her words.

In her silence.

I stepped back.

“Did you come here because you feel guilty?””

“Yes.””

“Or because you need something?””

Her expression changed.

Just for a moment.

Then she smiled again.

“You always think the worst.””

“No.””

I closed the door halfway.

“I’m finally thinking at all.””

Before I closed it completely, Valerie spoke.

“Evelyn.””

I stopped.

“You should ask Daniel why Richard removed him from something.””

My hand froze on the door.

“What?””

She smiled faintly.

“I think you deserve to know what your husband really thought of your son.””

Then she walked away.

I stood there completely still.

Because for the first time…

Valerie had given me information without asking for anything.

And that scared me more than her lies.

I immediately called Thomas.

He answered on the second ring.

“Evelyn?””

“Richard removed Daniel from something?””

Silence.

A long silence.

Then Thomas said:

“I was hoping you wouldn’t find out this way.””

My heart started racing.

“What did Richard do?””

Thomas lowered his voice.

“Before he passed away, Richard changed one important part of his estate.””

“What part?””

Thomas paused.

Then said:

“Your son was originally supposed to inherit control over the family business.””

I closed my eyes.

“And now?””

“Now he isn’t.””

I sat down.

“Why?””

Thomas’s answer was quiet.

“Because Richard discovered something about Daniel.””

I whispered:

“What?””

Thomas took a breath.

“He found evidence that Daniel had been hiding financial problems from you for years.””

My hands went cold.

But then Thomas said something even worse.

“And Evelyn…”

“Yes?””

“The person who helped Richard discover the truth…”

I waited.

“It was someone you never expected.””

The line went silent.

And then Thomas said the name.

A name that changed everything.
