Chapter 12: The Truth Daniel Hid

I couldn’t speak.

The words sat between us.

Someone had been planning to use me.

Not accidentally.

Not because of desperation.

Planning.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“Who?””

His face twisted with guilt.

“I don’t know everything.””

“Then tell me what you do know.””

He sat down.

“When Dad started asking questions, he asked me about Valerie.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because he noticed things.””

“What things?””

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

“She was asking about your accounts.””

My stomach dropped.

“When?””

“Months before Dad died.””

I looked away.

Months.

Not weeks.

Not recently.

Months.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel whispered:

“Because I didn’t want to believe it.””

I nodded slowly.

“And now?””

“Now I think Dad was right.””

I walked to the kitchen.

I needed movement.

Anything.

Standing still felt impossible.

“Daniel, I need you to understand something.””

He looked up.

“I can forgive mistakes.””

His eyes filled.

“But I cannot forgive being kept in the dark.””

“I know.””

“No.””

I turned around.

“You don’t.””

He went quiet.

I continued.

“Your father spent his life protecting me. You spent years protecting everyone else’s comfort.””

That hurt him.

But it needed to be said.

Then Daniel said something unexpected.

“Mom.””

“Yes?””

“I think Valerie is scared.””

I frowned.

“Scared of what?””

“Of losing control.””

I stared at him.

“What control?””

He hesitated.

Then answered:

“The money.””

A chill moved through me.

Not because it surprised me.

Because it confirmed what I already knew.

My phone rang.

Thomas.

I answered.

“Hello?””

“Evelyn, I found something.””

His voice was serious.

“What?””

“Records from Richard’s private investigation.””

I froze.

“Investigation?””

“Yes.””

“Richard investigated Valerie?””

“No.””

A pause.

“He investigated Daniel.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Richard wasn’t trying to destroy our family.

He was trying to understand it.

“What did he find?””

Thomas hesitated.

“Financial transfers.””

“From Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“To whom?””

Silence.

Then:

“Valerie.””

I looked at Daniel.

He heard.

His face changed.

“No.””

Thomas continued.

“There were repeated transfers over several months.””

Daniel stood.

“That’s impossible.””

I looked at him.

“Did you know?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I swear.””

I believed him.

Because this wasn’t the face of a man caught.

This was the face of someone discovering betrayal.

“Thomas,” I said.

“What else?””

He took a breath.

“Richard found evidence that Valerie was moving money away from accounts Daniel controlled.””

“Why?””

“We don’t know yet.””

I felt overwhelmed.

Every answer opened another question.

Then Thomas said:

“There is one more thing.””

“What?””

“Richard left a recorded message.””

I stopped.

“A message?””

“Yes.””

“For you.””

“When can I hear it?””

Thomas was quiet.

“Tomorrow.””

“Why not now?””

“Because Richard left instructions.””

“What instructions?””

Thomas answered carefully.

“He wanted Daniel to be present when you heard it.””

I looked at my son.

Daniel looked terrified.

“Why?””

Thomas’s voice softened.

“Because Richard believed the message would change how you see your son.””

I held the phone tighter.

Then Thomas added one final sentence.

“And Evelyn…”

“Yes?””

“He believed it would also reveal who truly betrayed him.””

The call ended.

I looked at Daniel.

For years, I thought I knew exactly who needed saving.

My son.

But tomorrow…

I would finally hear Richard’s last words.

And I had a feeling the person I needed to protect myself from…

Was not the person I expected.
