Chapter 13: Richard’s Final Message

The next morning, Daniel and I sat in the same office where everything had started.

The same room where Richard’s letters had been opened.

The same room where I learned that love without boundaries could become something dangerous.

Thomas placed a small device on the table.

“This is the recording Richard left.””

Daniel stared at it.

“He made a video?””

“No,” Thomas said.

“Only audio.””

I looked at my son.

He looked nervous.

Not because he was afraid of being exposed.

Because he was afraid of what his father might say.

Thomas pressed play.

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then I heard his voice.

Richard.

Older.

Tired.

But still my Richard.

“My dear Evelyn…”

My eyes immediately filled.

Daniel looked down.

“If you are hearing this, it means you have reached the moment I hoped you would never have to face.””

A pause.

“I know you. You will want to fix everything. You will want to protect Daniel. You will want to believe there is a simple explanation.””

I closed my eyes.

Because he was right.

Richard continued.

“Evelyn, our son is not a bad man.””

Daniel looked up.

His expression changed.

“But he has made choices that allowed other people to make decisions for him.””

Daniel covered his mouth.

The words hurt because they were gentle.

Not an attack.

A truth.

“Daniel, if you are listening, I want you to know something.””

My son froze.

“Your mother has spent her entire life believing love means carrying someone when they fall.””

A pause.

“She did it for me. She did it for you. She did it for everyone.””

My hands trembled.

“But a person cannot carry everyone forever.””

The recording continued.

“Daniel, I found evidence that Valerie was moving money from accounts connected to your business.””

Daniel whispered:

“I didn’t know.””

Richard’s voice continued.

“I do not believe you planned this. I do believe you ignored warning signs because facing them was painful.””

Daniel looked away.

The truth landed.

Then Richard said something I never expected.

“But Valerie was not the person I feared most.””

My breathing stopped.

Thomas looked at me.

Daniel looked confused.

Richard continued.

“The person I feared most was the part of Daniel that wanted to believe every problem could disappear if someone else solved it.””

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“She did not create every weakness in him. She simply learned how to use them.””

The room was silent.

Then Richard said:

“Evelyn, the trust is not a punishment. It is a gift.””

I listened carefully.

“I want you to have freedom. Not because our family failed you, but because you deserve a life where your kindness is a choice, not an obligation.””

The recording paused.

Then one final sentence came.

“The truth will hurt, but it will also set people free.””

The audio ended.

Nobody spoke.

For a long time.

Finally, Daniel whispered:

“He knew.””

I looked at him.

“He knew everything.””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel wiped his face.

“I thought Dad hated me.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

I answered quietly.

“Maybe because he wanted you to choose honesty without being forced.””

Daniel looked down.

Then Thomas placed another document on the table.

“There’s one more thing.””

I looked at him.

“What now?””

“This is the final financial report Richard requested before his death.””

Daniel picked it up.

His face changed after reading the first page.

“What is it?””

He looked at me.

“Valerie wasn’t just hiding money.””

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?””

He turned the pages.

“She was preparing to sell her share of the company.””

Thomas nodded.

“And there is more.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What?””

Thomas said:

“The buyer was never disclosed.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who was it?””

Thomas opened another file.

Inside was a name.

I read it.

And my heart stopped.

Because it wasn’t a stranger.

It wasn’t a business partner.

It was someone I had welcomed into my home.

May you like

Someone I had trusted.

Someone who had sat at my dinner table.
