Chapter 9: Claire’s Locker
“Claire is dead.””
I said it three times.
Nobody answered.
Morales finally took the note.
“It could mean evidence Claire left behind.””
“It says Claire is waiting there.””
“Richard wants you emotional.””
“It’s working.””
I looked at Lily.
She was exhausted.
Six years old and trapped inside a nightmare created before she was born.
I knelt in front of her.
“You’re going somewhere safe with Maria.””
“No.””
“Lily—”
“I want you.””
“I know.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Everybody keeps disappearing.””
That broke me.
I hugged her.
“I’m coming back.””
“Promise?””
“Promise.””
Police took Maria and Lily to a protected location.
I watched their car leave before getting into Morales’s vehicle.
We drove toward the abandoned Mercer facility with four police units behind us.
Warehouse 37 stood at the edge of an industrial park.
Broken windows.
Rusting doors.
No lights.
Officers cleared the building.
Nobody inside.
We found Row 14.
Unit 09.
Locker 22.
A digital keypad waited on the door.
Morales looked at me.
“Code?””
I tried 0318.
Red.
1987.
Red.
Then I thought of Claire.
Our wedding anniversary.
Green.
The locker clicked open.
Inside was a single wooden box.
And a television.
An old-fashioned flat-screen connected to a battery pack.
Morales checked the box.
“No wires.””
I opened it.
A remote control.
One button.
PLAY.
I pressed it.
The television came alive.
Claire appeared.
Not crying this time.
Calm.
Alive.
Sitting in our old kitchen.
My knees weakened.
“Daniel,” she said on the recording, “if you’re watching this, then I failed.””
I sat on the concrete floor.
Claire continued.
“My father helped create Mercer Biotech. Your father and Richard Vale pushed him out using forged debt documents.””
Morales recorded the screen.
“Years later, my father discovered Richard had been conducting illegal trials through shell companies.””
My skin prickled.
“Before Dad could expose him, he died.””
Claire paused.
“I didn’t believe it was natural.””
I stared at her face.
“I began investigating.””
She held up documents.
“I found payments to doctors, private clinics and women recruited as surrogates.””
Rachel.
Natalie.
“I also discovered Richard had become obsessed with controlling the company after your father died.””
Claire’s voice cracked.
“You were the obstacle.””
I stopped breathing.
“Daniel, Richard couldn’t remove you without triggering trust provisions. But he found another way.””
Claire held up a photograph of Natalie.
“He wanted a child.””
I felt sick.
“A Mercer heir who could eventually control both sides of the original ownership.””
Morales whispered, “Jesus.””
Claire continued.
“Natalie agreed to provide eggs. I agreed to the surrogacy because I wanted a baby so badly that I ignored questions I should have asked.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I forged your consent.””
I closed mine.
“I’m sorry, Daniel.””
Then Claire said something unexpected.
“But Richard lied to all of us.””
She held up another laboratory report.
“He told Natalie her eggs were used.””
My eyes opened.
“They weren’t.””
I stared at the screen.
Claire leaned closer to the camera.
“Lily is not Natalie’s biological daughter.””
“What?”” I whispered.
Morales looked at me.
Claire continued.
“After Lily was born, I secretly tested Natalie.””
I remembered the maternal test in Rachel’s case.
That test had shown Rachel wasn’t Lily’s mother.
There had been no test for Natalie.
“Richard substituted the egg.””
Claire looked frightened now.
“I discovered the biological mother’s identity three days ago.””
The video flickered.
Then froze.
“No.””
I pressed play.
Nothing.
“Come on.””
The screen went black.
Morales checked the cables.
“Battery’s fine.””
A mechanical click sounded behind us.
Every officer turned.
Part of the locker’s back wall opened.
Inside was a second compartment.
A red folder sat alone on a shelf.
I grabbed it.
DNA REPORT.
Lily Mercer.
Maternal Match.
My hands shook.
The matching name had been blacked out.
“What the hell?””
Morales pointed.
“There.””
A handwritten note was attached.
USE THE UV LIGHT.
There was a small ultraviolet flashlight inside the folder.
I switched it on.
Faint handwriting appeared across the blacked-out section.
A name.
I stared at it.
“That’s impossible.””
Morales read it.
“Evelyn Hart.””
My mind rejected it.
Claire’s sister.
Lily’s aunt.
Biologically—
her mother?
Then another line appeared under ultraviolet light.
EVELYN DOES NOT KNOW.
I looked at Morales.
“If Evelyn didn’t know, who took her eggs?””
A slow clap echoed through the warehouse.
We turned.
Richard Vale stood on the metal walkway above us.
A pistol hung casually from his right hand.
Vanessa stood beside him.
Her wrists were bound.
Blood ran from her forehead.
Officers raised their weapons.
“Drop the gun!””
Richard smiled.
“I wouldn’t.””
He pressed the pistol against Vanessa’s head.
“Richard!”” I shouted.
“Hello, Daniel.””
“You wanted me here. I’m here.””
“Yes.””
“Let her go.””
“Soon.””
He looked at the red folder in my hand.
“You found Claire’s little revelation.””
“You stole Evelyn’s eggs.””
Richard smiled.
“Claire was clever.””
“Why Evelyn?””
“Because her father’s ownership rights passed through his biological descendants.””
I stared at him.
“You created Lily to control the shares.””
“I created an insurance policy.””
“You used my DNA.””
“Yes.””
“You used Evelyn’s eggs without her knowledge.””
“Yes.””
“You manipulated Claire into arranging the pregnancy.””
“Yes.””
Each answer was delivered like a business transaction.
“You’re insane.””
“No, Daniel.””
Richard’s smile disappeared.
“I’m patient.””
Vanessa suddenly shouted, “Tell him the rest!””
Richard shoved the gun harder against her temple.
“Quiet.””
Vanessa looked down at me.
“Daniel, Claire found out who sabotaged her car!””
Richard struck her across the face with the pistol.
“Stop!””
Vanessa nearly fell.
Officers shouted commands.
Richard dragged her backward.
I raised both hands.
“Okay. Nobody moves.””
Richard smiled again.
“Good.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Who sabotaged Claire’s car?””
She was crying now.
“Vanessa,” I said, “tell me.””
Richard’s finger tightened near the trigger.
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“It wasn’t Richard.””
My stomach dropped.
“Then who?””
She opened her mouth.
A shot exploded through the warehouse.
Vanessa screamed.
Richard ducked.
Police scattered.
The bullet hadn’t come from Richard’s gun.
It had come through a high window behind me.
A sniper.
Richard looked genuinely shocked.
Then his expression became fear.
Not for Vanessa.
For himself.
He shouted one name.
May you like
“Evelyn!””
And every light in the warehouse went out.
