Chapter 12: The Scar Behind Her Ear
I lunged at Richard.
“Daniel, stop!””
Evelyn grabbed me.
Richard held up the remote.
“One more step.””
I froze.
“What did you put inside my daughter?””
“A monitoring device.””
“Where?””
“Behind her left ear.””
My stomach turned.
I remembered Lily’s surgery when she was three.
Vanessa had told me Lily needed a minor procedure after repeated ear infections.
I had been overseas when it happened.
Vanessa handled everything.
“You did this?””
Richard smiled.
“Vanessa arranged it.””
I wanted to kill him.
Instead I forced myself to breathe.
“What happens if you press that button?””
“Nothing pleasant.””
Evelyn’s face changed.
“He’s bluffing.””
“Would you gamble Lily’s life?””
“No.””
Richard extended his hand.
“The key.””
I looked at the brass key.
“Let Lily leave first.””
“No.””
“Then you get nothing.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“We both know you’ll give it to me.””
“Maybe.””
I slipped the key into my fist.
“But if you hurt Lily, I have no reason to cooperate.””
For the first time, Richard hesitated.
Good.
He needed something.
That meant we still had leverage.
I called toward the room.
“Lily?””
The door opened.
She peeked out.
“Daddy?””
“Come here slowly.””
Richard raised the remote.
“Daniel.””
“She’s coming to me.””
Lily crossed the hallway.
I lifted her.
“Does this hurt?””
I touched behind her left ear.
She winced.
“A little.””
My fingers found something.
A tiny hard ridge beneath the skin.
Rage flooded through me.
“When did you get this scar?””
“When Vanessa took me to the doctor.””
“What doctor?””
“Dr. Cole.””
Richard’s eyes flickered.
Evelyn noticed.
“Samuel Cole?””
Richard said nothing.
Evelyn looked at me.
“He worked on Richard’s illegal trials.””
My phone vibrated silently in my pocket.
One buzz.
Morales.
Police were listening.
I needed time.
“Richard, tell me what’s in the implant.””
“No.””
“If I’m giving you the key, I want proof Lily survives.””
Richard sighed.
“It tracks vital signs and location.””
“And?””
“Nothing.””
“Then why the remote?””
Silence.
Evelyn whispered, “There is no explosive.””
Richard smiled.
“No.””
Relief nearly dropped me.
Then he added, “But there is a drug reservoir.””
My arms tightened around Lily.
“What drug?””
“Enough sedative to stop a child’s breathing if released at once.””
Evelyn looked horrified.
“You monster.””
Richard shrugged.
“Insurance.””
Lily didn’t understand.
Thank God.
She whispered, “Daddy, can we go home?””
“Soon.””
Richard extended his hand.
“The key.””
I looked down at Lily.
Then I threw the key across the room.
Richard caught it.
“Now let her go.””
He smiled.
“No.””
I had expected that.
What Richard didn’t know was that I had switched the key.
Evelyn had handed me the real brass key.
But there had been another old key on the cabinet.
I gave him that one.
Richard backed toward the door.
“Daniel, you and Lily are coming with me.””
“No.””
He lifted the remote.
Lily buried her face in my neck.
I raised my hands.
“Okay.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Take me instead.””
Richard laughed.
“You stopped being valuable years ago.””
That hurt her.
I saw it.
Then she looked at me.
Not at my face.
At my jacket pocket.
The real key.
She knew.
Richard motioned toward the door.
“Move.””
I carried Lily outside.
A black SUV waited.
Richard opened the rear door.
“Inside.””
Then headlights exploded across the property.
Police vehicles surged from both sides.
“Police! Drop the device!””
Richard grabbed Lily.
I twisted away.
He pressed the remote.
Nothing happened.
His face changed.
He pressed it again.
Nothing.
Morales shouted, “DOWN!””
I dropped with Lily.
Evelyn tackled Richard.
The remote flew across the gravel.
Officers swarmed him.
Richard screamed.
“What did you do?””
I covered Lily with my body.
Morales kicked the remote away.
Richard stared at it.
Then at me.
“That should have worked.””
A voice came from behind the police line.
“No.””
Vanessa.
Her forehead was bandaged.
An officer supported her.
Richard’s face went white.
Vanessa walked closer.
“I replaced the reservoir two years ago.””
I stared at her.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“When I discovered what Richard had implanted, I had another surgeon remove the drug chamber.””
“Why didn’t you remove everything?””
“Because Richard would know.””
I couldn’t forgive her.
Not after Rachel.
Not after Lily.
But in that moment, she had saved my daughter.
Richard was handcuffed.
Evelyn looked at me.
“The real key.””
I pulled it from my pocket.
“Where exactly does it go?””
She gave me an address inside Mercer Biotech headquarters.
Sublevel three.
Room 17.
“There is no room seventeen.””
“There is.””
The next morning, with police and federal investigators surrounding the building, I used the key on a hidden lock behind an old laboratory cabinet.
A steel panel opened.
Inside was a deposit drawer.
I pulled it out.
One envelope.
One flash drive.
And a letter.
My name was written across the front.
Claire’s handwriting.
I opened it.
Daniel,
If you found this, Richard failed to bury the truth.
I unfolded the next page.
The original Mercer Biotech ownership agreement was inside.
My father: 34%.
Richard Vale: 33%.
Claire’s father: 33%.
Below it were amendments.
Forged signatures.
Illegal transfers.
Evidence that could dismantle Richard’s control.
But Claire’s letter continued.
There is something else you need to know about Lily.
My heart began pounding.
I read faster.
Richard believes Lily was conceived using your genetic sample and Evelyn’s egg.
That is what I believed too.
Until I ordered one final test.
I stopped.
Morales stood beside me.
“What is it?””
I couldn’t answer.
The letter shook in my hands.
Claire had attached another DNA report.
PATERNAL RELATIONSHIP ANALYSIS.
Daniel Mercer.
Lily Mercer.
The result was different from the earlier test.
Probability of paternity:
0%.
My vision blurred.
“No.””
Morales looked at the paper.
“But the first test said 99.99%.””
I kept reading Claire’s letter.
The first test was falsified.
Richard wanted you to believe Lily was biologically yours.
I felt like the floor had vanished.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
But DNA is not why I am writing this.
You are Lily’s father, Daniel. You were there when she opened her eyes. You held her when she was sick.
You sang to her when she couldn’t sleep. Never let Richard turn biology into a weapon against the bond you built.
I pressed my fist against my mouth.
Then I saw the last line.
One final truth remained.
I know whose DNA Richard used.
Underneath, Claire had written a name.
I read it once.
Then again.
My blood turned cold.
Because the biological father of my daughter was a man I had been told was dead for twenty-nine years.
May you like
My own older brother.
Michael Mercer.
