Chapter 4: The Woman at the Door

Everyone heard the front door slam.

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Rachel grabbed the edge of the stretcher.

“She’s here.””

I handed Lily to Officer Morales.

“Keep her with you.””

“Daddy, no!””

“I’m not leaving you, sweetheart. Stay right behind the officer.””

Footsteps crossed the marble foyer upstairs.

Slow.

Unhurried.

Whoever had entered my house wasn’t running.

She believed she belonged there.

Then a woman called down the hallway.

“Vanessa?””

I knew that voice.

My stomach dropped.

“Daniel?””

She appeared in the storage-room doorway.

Evelyn Hart.

My late wife’s older sister.

Lily called her Aunt Evelyn.

For six years, Evelyn had attended Lily’s birthdays. She brought Christmas presents. She had a key to my mansion because I trusted her enough to check on the house when I traveled.

Now I looked at the frozen video on Claire’s phone.

Same narrow face.

Same sharp chin.

Same pale scar above the eyebrow.

Older now.

But unmistakable.

Evelyn looked around.

Police.

Paramedics.

Broken plaster.

The exposed metal door.

Then she saw Rachel.

Her handbag slipped from her fingers.

“No.””

Rachel whispered, “That’s her.””

Officer Morales immediately moved toward Evelyn.

“Ma’am, please keep your hands where we can see them.””

Evelyn didn’t even look at him.

Her eyes stayed on Rachel.

“You were supposed to disappear.””

Silence.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

I felt something inside me break.

“What did you just say?””

Evelyn finally looked at me.

“Daniel, this isn’t what it looks like.””

I almost laughed.

There was a woman tied inside a secret room.

My dead wife’s final video showed Evelyn approaching her car.

And Evelyn had just admitted she knew Rachel was supposed to disappear.

“What does it look like, Evelyn?””

She took one step backward.

Officer Morales blocked the doorway.

“Stay where you are.””

Evelyn raised her hands.

“Fine.””

I held up Claire’s phone.

“You were with Claire the night she died.””

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“Who gave you that?””

“Answer me.””

“She shouldn’t have recorded me.””

My skin went cold.

Rachel stared at her.

“You threatened her.””

“I tried to stop her from destroying everyone.””

“By killing her?”” I demanded.

Evelyn snapped her head toward me.

“I did not kill my sister.””

“Then why were you at her car?””

“Because Claire called me.””

“Why?””

“She was hysterical.””

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“She was terrified.””

Evelyn ignored her.

“Claire wanted to tell you about the surrogacy. She wanted to expose the forged paperwork. She thought confession would make everything better.””

“You mean she wanted to tell me the truth.””

“The truth would have destroyed her marriage.””

“That was her decision.””

“No,” Evelyn said sharply.

“It affected all of us.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“Stop talking.””

Evelyn turned toward her.

“You already ruined this.””

Vanessa stared back.

“I ruined it?””

“You kept Rachel here.””

“I kept her alive.””

That sentence landed like a bomb.

Rachel sat upright.

“What?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

For the first time, the woman I had believed was my wife looked exhausted rather than calculating.

She pointed toward Evelyn.

“She told me to get rid of Rachel.””

Officer Morales said, “Mrs. Mercer, be very careful about what you’re alleging.””

“I know exactly what I’m saying.””

Evelyn’s voice dropped.

“Vanessa.””

“No. I’m done protecting you.””

Rachel shook her head.

“You locked me underground.””

“Because she found you.””

“You drugged me!””

“I stopped her from killing you!””

I stepped between them.

“Enough.””

They fell silent.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Start at the beginning.””

Her eyes met mine.

“Three weeks ago, Rachel contacted me.””

Rachel nodded reluctantly.

“I found Vanessa’s office address.””

Vanessa continued.

“She said she still had Claire’s phone and copies of the original hospital documents. She wanted to meet you.””

“So you kidnapped her?””

“I panicked.””

“That’s your defense?””

“No.””

Vanessa looked toward the hidden room.

“I brought her here to convince her not to tell you until I could figure out how much Evelyn knew.””

Rachel’s voice trembled.

“She offered me money.””

Vanessa didn’t deny it.

“When I refused, she wouldn’t let me leave.””

“You tied her up.””

“Yes.””

I stared at her.

“You covered the door with plaster.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Yes.””

“You terrified Lily.””

Her eyes lowered.

“Yes.””

Every answer made the woman in front of me feel more like a stranger.

Then Evelyn laughed softly.

“You’re believing her?””

Vanessa turned.

“Tell him why you came here tonight.””

Evelyn’s smile disappeared.

Vanessa pointed at her handbag.

“She didn’t come to visit.””

Officer Morales picked up the fallen bag.

“May I search this?””

Evelyn immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

That was enough.

The officer stopped her and opened it.

Inside were gloves.

A roll of duct tape.

A syringe sealed in plastic.

And a small bottle without a pharmacy label.

Rachel made a broken sound.

“That’s what she used before.””

Evelyn shouted, “That isn’t mine!””

“It was in your bag,” Officer Morales said.

“You don’t understand.””

I stared at Evelyn.

“What were you planning?””

She looked at Lily.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

So did Rachel.

“Get Lily out of here!”” Rachel screamed.

I moved instantly.

I pulled my daughter into my arms and backed away.

Evelyn’s face twisted.

“I would never hurt Lily.””

“Don’t say her name.””

“Daniel—”

“Don’t say my daughter’s name!””

Police pulled Evelyn away.

She began shouting.

“You’re protecting the wrong person!””

I froze.

“What?””

Evelyn struggled against the officers.

“Ask Rachel why Claire chose her!””

Rachel’s face changed.

“Shut up.””

“Ask her!””

“Evelyn!””

“Ask Rachel where she met Claire!””

I turned.

Rachel looked terrified.

“Rachel?””

She said nothing.

“Where did you meet my wife?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel, it doesn’t matter.””

“It matters now.””

Evelyn laughed as police dragged her toward the hallway.

“Oh, it matters.””

Then she shouted the sentence that stopped everyone.

“Rachel didn’t meet Claire at the hospital.””

I looked at Rachel.

May you like

Evelyn smiled.

“She met Claire because she already knew you.””
