Chapter 8: The Man Who Knew My Mother Best
Thomas Walker agreed to meet us at a small coffee shop near Midtown Atlanta.
He arrived twenty minutes early.
He was in his late fifties, with silver hair, a worn leather briefcase, and the exhausted expression of someone who hadn't slept properly in days.
When Alexander and I entered, Thomas stood immediately.
"Mr. Carter.""
Alexander nodded.
"Mr. Walker.""
Thomas looked at me.
"Mrs. Bennett, I'm sorry about your mother.""
"Thank you.""
We sat at a table near the window.
Thomas placed his briefcase between his feet.
"I worked for Richard Collins for seventeen years. I handled estate filings, property transfers, and private client records.""
"What happened?"" I asked.
He looked toward the window.
"Your mother came to our office about four months before she died. She was carrying a folder and looked frightened.""
I leaned forward.
"What did she say?""
"She told Mr. Collins that she suspected someone had accessed her trust documents without permission.""
Alexander's jaw tightened.
"Did Richard admit anything?""
Thomas shook his head.
"No. He told her everything was under control. But after she left, I heard him speaking on the phone.""
"With whom?""
Thomas hesitated.
"Daniel Mitchell.""
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
"What did you hear?""
"He said the replacement document was ready. He also said your mother had become suspicious and that they needed to move quickly.""
Alexander leaned forward.
"Did you record the conversation?""
Thomas opened his briefcase.
"I did.""
He removed a small digital recorder.
"I didn't know what else to do. I had worked with Richard for years, but I had never seen him behave like that.""
He placed the recorder on the table.
Alexander nodded to Jonathan, who had accompanied us.
Jonathan connected it to his laptop.
A moment later, Richard Collins's voice filled the room.
"The original beneficiary schedule needs to disappear before the administrator requests it.""
Then Daniel's voice.
"What about Vanessa?""
"She'll sign whatever you put in front of her. She wants the money.""
I gripped the edge of the table.
The recording continued.
Daniel laughed.
"And Emily?""
Richard replied, "Emily is the problem. Your wife has been telling me for years that her sister shouldn't receive everything.""
My stomach twisted.
Then Daniel said something that made me look at Alexander.
"What if Emily's husband gets involved?""
Richard laughed.
"Alexander Carter? He won't interfere. Your mother never told him the whole story.""
The recording stopped.
Silence filled the table.
I looked at my husband.
"Did Mom tell you about the trust?""
Alexander nodded slowly.
"She told me about the original arrangement. She also told me she was concerned about Richard and Daniel.""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
He looked genuinely pained.
"Because she asked me to wait until the estate administrator could verify everything. She was afraid that if Daniel discovered how much we knew, he'd destroy the evidence.""
I stared at him.
"She trusted you with all this while I knew nothing.""
"I know.""
"Do you understand how that feels?""
He reached for my hand.
"Yes. And I'm sorry.""
I pulled my hand away.
Not because I didn't love him.
But because I suddenly felt surrounded by people who had decided what I could handle.
My mother.
My husband.
Everyone.
I stood.
"I need some air.""
Alexander didn't stop me.
Outside, the November wind swept through the street.
I walked several steps before hearing him follow.
"Emily.""
I turned.
"Did you know Mom was afraid Vanessa would take the inheritance?""
"I suspected she was worried about Daniel.""
"That's not what I asked.""
He looked down.
"No. I didn't know how far Vanessa was involved.""
I crossed my arms.
"Why didn't Mom tell me?""
"She was trying to protect you.""
"Everyone keeps saying that. But nobody seems to understand that being protected from the truth can hurt too.""
Alexander stepped closer.
"You're right.""
I looked at him.
He didn't defend himself.
Didn't make excuses.
He simply waited.
Finally, I whispered, "I don't want to spend the rest of my life discovering secrets about my own family.""
He took my hand.
"Then we won't keep any more secrets.""
I wanted to believe him.
My phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered.
"Emily?""
Her voice was almost unrecognizable.
"Daniel knows about the recording.""
I froze.
"How?""
"He called Richard this morning. They were arguing. I heard everything.""
"Where is Daniel now?""
"At the house.""
"Then leave.""
She began crying.
"I can't.""
"Why?""
"Because he took my passport, my car keys, and my phone charger. He says I'm not allowed to leave until I tell him what I gave you.""
My stomach tightened.
"Vanessa, are you safe?""
There was a loud crash in the background.
Then Daniel's voice.
"Who are you talking to?""
Vanessa whispered, "Nobody.""
He shouted something I couldn't understand.
Then she spoke again.
"Emily, please. There's something in his office. A second envelope. He keeps saying it's insurance.""
"What kind of insurance?""
"I don't know.""
I heard footsteps.
Daniel's voice came closer.
"Give me the phone.""
Vanessa whispered one final sentence.
"Emily, if anything happens to me, look inside Mom's old jewelry box.""
Then the call disconnected.
I stared at my phone.
Alexander was already dialing security.
"Get the address of Vanessa's property. Send someone there immediately.""
I grabbed his arm.
"She's in danger.""
He looked directly at me.
"I know.""
Jonathan approached us.
"Mr. Carter, there's another development.""
Alexander turned.
"What?""
Jonathan held up his phone.
"Thomas just sent us an additional file. It's an email from Richard Collins to Daniel Mitchell.""
"What does it say?""
Jonathan looked at me.
"It concerns a second beneficiary.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"Who?""
He turned the screen around.
The email contained a short message.
Once Emily's claim is eliminated, the estate transfers to the person already listed as the final successor.
Below it was a name.
Not Vanessa.
May you like
Not Daniel.
*Alexander Carter.*
