Chapter 11: The Box My Mother Hid From Everyone

I called Vanessa immediately.

She answered after the first ring.

"Emily?""

"Where is Mom's hospital box?""

Silence.

Then she whispered, "How did you find out?""

"That's not an answer.""

"I still have it.""

My heart began pounding.

"Where?""

"At the house.""

"Why didn't you give it to the estate attorney?""

"Because Daniel told me to destroy it.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did you?""

"No.""

"Vanessa, listen carefully. That box may contain the only evidence proving what Daniel and Richard did.""

"I know.""

"Then bring it to me.""

She started crying.

"I can't come to the office. Daniel might find out.""

Alexander held out his hand.

I gave him the phone.

"Vanessa, this is Alexander. We can arrange a secure meeting. Nobody will force you to return to that house.""

She was quiet.

Then she asked, "Will Emily come?""

Alexander looked at me.

"Yes.""

"Okay.""

The call ended.

We arranged to meet at a private office near the hospital where Mom had received her final treatment.

Vanessa arrived forty minutes later.

She wore a baseball cap and a large coat, carrying a battered blue storage box.

When she entered, she looked at me first.

"I'm sorry.""

I didn't answer.

She placed the box on the table.

"This is everything.""

The box was small, with a brass lock and a faded ribbon tied around it.

I recognized it immediately.

Mom used to keep old photographs and family letters inside similar boxes.

I touched the lid.

"Did you open it?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Once.""

"What did you see?""

"Documents. A USB drive. Some photographs. And a letter addressed to you.""

I looked at her.

"Why didn't you give it to me?""

She lowered her eyes.

"Because Daniel said the contents could destroy us.""

I turned toward her.

"Us?""

"Our marriage. His career. Everything.""

I took a breath.

"Vanessa, you've spent years telling me how wonderful your life was. How much money you had. How successful Daniel was. Was any of it real?""

She looked at the floor.

"Some of it.""

"Which part?""

"The house was bought with money Daniel borrowed. The cars were leased. The vacations were charged to business accounts.""

I stared at her.

"So the life you kept showing off...""

"Wasn't entirely ours.""

For the first time, I understood something.

Vanessa hadn't just stolen my fiancé.

She had built her entire identity around proving she had won.

And now she was terrified of losing the illusion.

Alexander placed the box in front of me.

"Open it.""

I used the small key Vanessa had brought.

The lock clicked.

Inside were several envelopes, a USB drive, a small notebook, and a photograph.

The photograph showed Mom sitting in her hospital bed.

Beside her was Richard Collins.

He was holding a folder.

But what caught my attention was the person standing behind him.

Daniel.

My hands trembled.

"When was this taken?""

Vanessa looked at the photograph.

"Three weeks before Mom died.""

I turned it over.

Mom had written a date and a short message.

They came together. I now know who has been taking the money.

I opened the first envelope.

It contained bank statements and copies of property ownership records.

The second held medical records.

The third contained a handwritten letter.

I recognized Mom's writing.

My dearest Emily,

If you are reading this, I hope you are surrounded by people who love you honestly.

There are things I should have told you sooner. I thought I could fix them quietly. I thought I could protect you without making you carry the burden.

I was wrong.

My eyes blurred.

I continued.

Daniel has been using Richard to access information about my estate. Vanessa has helped him, although I still believe she does not understand the full extent of what he intends to do.

I have changed the trust. You are the rightful beneficiary.

But there is one more reason I chose you.

I stopped.

Alexander sat beside me.

"Take your time.""

I continued.

You were the only person who never asked me what I could leave you. You gave me your time when you had very little to spare. You brought me soup when I couldn't eat. You sat beside me through the nights when I was frightened.

I cannot repay that love with money. But I can leave you something that no one should ever be allowed to take.

I covered my mouth.

Mom had never measured love in money.

I had always known that.

Still, reading her words felt like hearing her voice again.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

There is a reason I never trusted Daniel, and it has nothing to do with the affair.

My heart skipped.

I read the sentence again.

He was involved in something that happened to your father.

I looked up.

"What?""

Alexander leaned closer.

"What does it say?""

I handed him the letter.

He read it silently.

His expression darkened.

I turned toward Vanessa.

"Did you know?""

She shook her head.

"No. I swear.""

I opened the small notebook.

It contained dates, transaction amounts, and names.

One entry appeared repeatedly.

*November 14 — Daniel Mitchell — $185,000.*

Another name appeared beside it.

*David Bennett.*

My father's name.

I stared at the page.

Dad had died twelve years earlier in what everyone had called a road accident.

His car had left a rural highway during heavy rain.

The police had ruled it an accident.

Mom had never discussed the details.

I looked at Alexander.

"Why is Daniel's name here?""

He studied the notebook.

"I don't know yet.""

I opened the USB drive's contents on Jonathan's secure laptop.

There were several audio files.

The first contained Richard discussing the estate.

The second contained Daniel talking about the mansion.

The third was labeled:

*DAVID — FINAL WEEK.*

My hands went cold.

"Play it.""

Jonathan looked at Alexander.

Alexander nodded.

The recording began with background noise, followed by Richard's voice.

"Your father was becoming difficult.""

Then Daniel spoke.

"That was twelve years ago. Why are we discussing it now?""

Richard replied:

"Because Emily has started asking questions.""

My heart began pounding.

Daniel laughed.

"She doesn't remember anything.""

Richard's voice became quieter.

"Her mother does.""

There was a pause.

Then Daniel said something that made me grip the edge of the table.

"Your mother should have kept her mouth shut. David's accident was supposed to end this family problem years ago.""

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

I looked at Vanessa.

She was staring at the laptop, her face completely drained of color.

"Daniel knew our father?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I thought he barely remembered him.""

Alexander closed the laptop.

"Emily, we need to contact the authorities immediately.""

But I couldn't move.

My mother hadn't simply been protecting my inheritance.

She had been protecting the truth about my father.

And someone had been keeping that truth buried for twelve years.

Then the final audio file began playing automatically.

A woman's voice came through.

May you like

My mother's.

"If anything happens to me, Emily needs to know that her father didn't die because of the rain.""
