Chapter 14: The Last Thing My Father Left Behind
The storage unit stood at the end of an industrial street, surrounded by rusted fences and abandoned warehouses.
A police officer accompanied us.
So did Jonathan, Alexander, and Vanessa.
I held the small silver key inside my palm.
For twelve years, it had been sitting in my sister's jewelry pouch.
For twelve years, my father had been trying to leave us something.
The officer checked the unit number.
"Thirty-seven.""
Jonathan looked at the paperwork.
"That's the one.""
The lock was old and covered in dust.
I inserted the key.
It turned.
The door rolled upward with a metallic groan.
Inside were several cardboard boxes, an old filing cabinet, and a wooden desk.
Nothing looked particularly valuable.
But on the desk sat a brown leather briefcase.
I recognized it from Vanessa's description.
My father had been carrying it the night he died.
I approached slowly.
There was a small metal plate attached to the handle.
*DAVID BENNETT.*
My eyes filled.
I touched it.
"That's Dad's.""
Alexander stood beside me.
"Take your time.""
I opened the briefcase.
Inside were folders, photographs, bank statements, and a small tape recorder.
There was also an envelope addressed to my mother.
I opened it.
My darling Margaret,
If you're reading this, something has gone wrong. I've discovered that Richard Collins has been moving money through companies connected to Daniel Mitchell.
I have copies of the original transactions.
Daniel believes I will hand everything over quietly. He is wrong.
If anything happens to me, please protect our girls.
I couldn't continue.
Vanessa was crying beside me.
I handed her the letter.
She read it slowly.
Then she covered her face.
"I was in the car.""
I looked at her.
"What?""
She took a shaky breath.
"I remember more now.""
Everyone became still.
"After Dad picked up the briefcase, he drove toward the highway. The black SUV appeared behind us. Dad told me to get down.""
She began trembling.
"I heard him shouting at someone. Then there was a loud bang.""
I held her hand.
"What happened next?""
"Everything spun. I remember glass breaking. Dad was breathing heavily, and I was crying.""
She closed her eyes.
"Then someone opened the passenger door.""
My heart pounded.
"Who?""
"I couldn't see his face. But I heard him say, 'Where's the briefcase?''"
I looked at the leather case.
Vanessa continued.
"Dad told him to leave me alone. The man said he had already given him enough chances.""
Alexander exchanged a glance with the police officer.
"Did you recognize his voice?""
Vanessa nodded.
"It was Daniel.""
The officer immediately made a note.
I looked inside the briefcase again.
At the bottom was a small cassette tape labeled:
*NOVEMBER 14 — ORIGINAL RECORDING.*
The officer examined it.
"We'll need to preserve this as evidence.""
"Can we listen to it?"" I asked.
"We'll have it transferred properly.""
I nodded.
We spent another hour documenting the contents.
Then Jonathan found a folder marked with Richard Collins's name.
Inside were copies of payments, company registrations, and correspondence.
One document caught my attention.
It was a transfer authorization for $185,000.
The same amount recorded in Mom's notebook.
But this time, there was a handwritten note.
Payment to ensure witness silence.
My hands went cold.
"Robert Hayes?""
Jonathan nodded.
"Possibly.""
Another page contained a different payment.
This one was made to an account associated with Michael Turner.
And below it was a date.
Three days after my father's accident.
Alexander looked at the officer.
"This needs to go directly to the investigators.""
"Agreed.""
Then Vanessa found something hidden beneath the lining of the briefcase.
A small envelope.
She pulled it out.
"Emily.""
I took it.
My name was written on the front.
Inside was a letter.
To my beautiful girls,
If either of you is reading this, I hope you've grown into women who trust themselves.
I love you both more than anything in this world.
Vanessa, you are brave, even when you don't believe it.
Emily, you are strong, even when you choose to be gentle.
I never wanted either of you to carry the weight of my work.
But if someone has hurt our family, please don't let their lies become your truth.
I began crying.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
There is one person I trust with the full truth. If you need help, find Alexander Carter. He knows where the evidence belongs.
I looked up.
Alexander was staring at the letter.
"Did Dad know you?""
He nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
"How?""
He took a breath.
"Your father and I met at a business conference shortly before his death. He had discovered financial irregularities involving a development company that was trying to secure funding from Carter Global.""
"Was Daniel involved?""
"Yes. Your father approached me with documents. He believed someone was using fraudulent invoices to steal money from investors.""
I stared at him.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because your mother asked me to protect the evidence until it could be verified. She believed Daniel might still be watching the family.""
I looked down at the letter.
"Did you know he had caused the accident?""
"No. Not until today.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Alexander, did Dad leave you anything?""
He nodded.
"A copy of the original financial records. I gave them to your mother after his death.""
I looked at him.
"Then where are they?""
He pointed toward the final folder.
"Probably there.""
Jonathan opened it.
Inside was a list of companies.
One name appeared repeatedly.
*Mitchell Development Partners.*
But there was something else.
A handwritten note from my father.
The real money is not in the properties. It's in the offshore account.
Below it was a bank reference number.
Alexander stared at it.
Then he looked at me.
"Emily, this could explain where the missing estate money went.""
My phone vibrated.
An incoming call.
Daniel Mitchell.
I answered.
"Hello?""
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
"Emily. I hear you've been visiting old storage units.""
I looked at Alexander.
"Where are you?""
"That doesn't matter.""
"What do you want?""
"I want you to stop digging.""
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"Did you kill my father?""
There was silence.
Then Daniel laughed.
"Your father should have minded his own business.""
Vanessa began crying.
I put the call on speaker.
Daniel continued.
"Your mother made the same mistake. She thought she could protect everyone by hiding documents.""
"Where is the missing money?""
"Ask your husband.""
I looked at Alexander.
Daniel's voice became colder.
"He's been protecting himself for years, Emily. You have no idea what he did to get you that inheritance.""
The call ended.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Jonathan's phone rang.
He answered and listened.
His face changed.
"What happened?"" Alexander asked.
Jonathan covered the microphone.
"Richard Collins has been arrested.""
I exhaled.
Then Jonathan continued.
"But Daniel has disappeared.""
The police officer immediately contacted dispatch.
I looked down at my father's letter.
He had spent his final days trying to protect us.
And now, twelve years later, the man responsible was running.
Alexander took my hand.
"We'll find him.""
I nodded.
But there was one thing Daniel had said that I couldn't ignore.
Ask your husband.
I turned toward Alexander.
"What did he mean when he said you had been protecting yourself?""
Alexander's expression changed.
May you like
Then he quietly answered.
"Emily, there's one final piece of your father's investigation that I haven't told you.""
