Chapter 14: The Man Who Came Back From the Dead
"Nobody move!""
The command came from Special Agent Mercer.
Emergency lights flickered on along the corridor.
I heard footsteps.
A chair overturned.
Then someone shouted that the rear exit had been breached.
Admiral Reed pulled me behind the conference table.
"Stay down, Captain.""
I looked toward my mother.
She was crouched beside Jonathan, crying.
Victoria had disappeared from her chair.
"Where is she?"" I asked.
Mercer checked the restraints.
"She was here seconds ago.""
An agent rushed into the room.
"Sir, the transport team reports that the prisoner transfer vehicle has been compromised.""
Mercer swore under his breath.
"Where's Hale?""
"She was moved to the service corridor during the blackout.""
I looked at the empty chair.
Victoria had escaped.
But that wasn't what frightened me most.
Someone had known exactly when the lights would go out.
Someone inside the building had helped her.
My phone vibrated again.
*Old Navy warehouse. Pier 12. Come alone.*
Then another message.
*If you bring Reed, Michael dies.*
I showed the screen to the admiral.
He read it without speaking.
"I can't let you go alone," he finally said.
"Then we'll make sure nobody knows we're going.""
He shook his head.
"Evelyn, this could be another trap.""
"I know.""
Mercer stepped closer.
"We can monitor the location without approaching. If Michael is there, we'll get him out safely.""
I nodded.
An hour later, I stood outside an abandoned naval warehouse near Pier 12.
The building was surrounded by rusted fencing and old shipping containers.
A cold wind blew in from the water.
I entered through a side door.
"Michael?""
Something moved behind a stack of wooden crates.
Then a man stepped into the light.
He was taller than I expected.
His face was thinner, with a deep scar running from his left temple toward his jaw.
But his eyes were familiar.
I had seen them before.
In the old family photograph.
"Hello, little sister.""
My knees nearly gave way.
"Michael?""
He smiled.
"You got tall.""
I laughed through my tears.
"You're twenty-three years older than I remember.""
He nodded.
"That's what happens when people disappear.""
I approached slowly.
He looked at my back.
Then at the scars visible above my blouse.
His smile disappeared.
"I remember that fire.""
I stopped.
"You were there.""
"I was the one who gave you my breathing mask.""
My eyes filled.
"You saved my life.""
He shook his head.
"You saved mine. You dragged me out when the ceiling collapsed.""
I remembered the weight of another person.
The burning corridor.
The desperate attempt to reach the emergency exit.
But I had never known who I was carrying.
I stepped forward and hugged him.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he whispered:
"I'm sorry I wasn't there when you woke up.""
I pulled away.
"What happened?""
Michael sat on a wooden crate.
"After the rescue, Whitmore's men transferred me to a private medical facility. They told the hospital I was an unidentified contractor. They confiscated my belongings and kept me under surveillance.""
"Why didn't you contact us?""
"I tried.""
He looked at me.
"Your father came to see me once. He told me that if I contacted the family, Victoria would have you killed.""
I felt sick.
"Did he know you were alive?""
Michael nodded.
"He knew.""
I closed my eyes.
Another lie.
Another betrayal.
Michael continued.
"I escaped six months later. Peter helped me get out. But by then, the official records listed me as deceased.""
"Why did you stay hidden?""
"Because I had the original recording.""
He reached inside his jacket and removed a small digital recorder.
"This contains the unedited communications from the morning of the fire.""
I took it.
"Who ordered the door locked?""
Michael looked toward the warehouse entrance.
"Admiral Whitmore.""
I stared at him.
"Why?""
"Because he knew you had discovered the equipment defect. You were preparing to submit a formal report that would expose the entire procurement operation.""
"But why trap us?""
Michael's expression darkened.
"Because I was inside the compartment with you. Whitmore knew I had the original evidence. He wanted both of us gone.""
I looked down at the recorder.
"Jonathan said he activated the remote system.""
"He did.""
"Then how was Whitmore involved?""
Michael leaned forward.
"Jonathan activated the access sequence. But someone else issued the final locking command.""
"Who?""
Michael looked directly at me.
"Your father.""
I felt the air leave my lungs.
"Richard?""
"Yes. He was connected through the executive control terminal. Whitmore gave him the instructions.""
I shook my head.
"Why would Dad do that?""
"Because Victoria had discovered that your father had been secretly selling defective equipment to foreign buyers through an unauthorized subsidiary. Your investigation threatened to expose him.""
I remembered the audio recording.
Do what you have to do.
My father's voice.
Michael nodded.
"Whitmore promised him that if you and I disappeared, the investigation would be buried.""
I looked at my brother.
"Did Dad know we were still alive?""
"Yes. He knew I survived. He didn't know where I was.""
I struggled to process it.
"Why didn't you testify?""
"Because the original evidence was incomplete. I needed the final authorization recording.""
He pressed a button on the recorder.
A familiar voice filled the warehouse.
My father's.
"Seal the compartment. Nobody leaves until the report is secured.""
Then Whitmore answered.
"And if Evelyn is still inside?""
My father paused.
"She knows too much.""
The recording ended.
I felt tears running down my cheeks.
For five years, I had believed my father had abandoned me.
The truth was worse.
He had made a decision.
He had chosen his company over his children.
Suddenly, headlights swept across the warehouse windows.
Michael grabbed my arm.
"We have to go.""
A vehicle stopped outside.
Then a voice came through the loudspeaker.
"Michael Harrington! This is federal law enforcement. Step outside!""
I looked at Michael.
He shook his head.
"That's not the FBI.""
The voice came again.
"Come out now!""
Michael pulled me behind the crates.
Then he whispered:
"There's only one person who knew I would be here.""
A figure appeared in the doorway.
A familiar voice spoke.
"Evelyn, put the recorder down.""
I turned.
My father stood there.
And behind him was Admiral Edward Whitmore.
Whitmore held a gun.
My father held something even more terrifying.
A second recorder.
He looked at me.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart.""
May you like
Then he said:
"Give me the original evidence, or your brother dies.""
