Chapter 11: The Recording That Changed Everything

The first thing I heard was glass breaking.

The second was Jonathan shouting.

"Get down!""

He pulled me behind the heavy wooden desk just as another gunshot struck the wall.

Special Agent Mercer drew his weapon.

"Federal agents! Drop your weapon!""

A shadow moved across the hallway.

Then footsteps thundered toward the back entrance.

One of the agents shouted into his radio.

"Suspect moving toward the rear! Pursuit in progress!""

I looked at Jonathan.

Blood was running down his forehead.

"Are you hurt?""

He shook his head.

"Just a cut.""

Mercer crouched beside us.

"Stay here. Do not move until the perimeter is secure.""

I looked toward the laptop.

The screen was still glowing.

The recording had stopped at forty-seven seconds.

"Did you save it?"" I asked Jonathan.

He nodded.

"Everything is backed up.""

"Where?""

"On an encrypted server.""

Mercer immediately looked at him.

"Where is that server located?""

Jonathan hesitated.

"Not at Harrington Defense.""

"Where?""

"At the old naval club.""

I frowned.

"The place where Dad's retirement party was held?""

Jonathan nodded.

"I used a private storage terminal there. Victoria didn't know about it.""

Mercer looked toward the broken window.

"Then someone knew.""

A few minutes later, tactical officers secured the house.

The shooter had escaped, but an abandoned vehicle was found near the property's rear gate.

Inside was a military-style access card bearing the name of a private security contractor.

Mercer photographed it.

"That's interesting.""

I looked at the card.

"Who does he work for?""

"An organization called Sentinel Strategic Protection.""

Jonathan went pale.

"That's Victoria's security company.""

Mercer stood.

"Then we'll find out who authorized the operation.""

He turned toward Jonathan.

"You're coming with us.""

My brother nodded.

Before leaving, I approached him.

"Why did you really contact me tonight?""

He looked at me for a long moment.

"Because I knew they were going to kill me.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"Victoria discovered I had the recordings. She called me yesterday and told me to destroy them.""

"Why didn't you go to the authorities?""

"I tried.""

He removed his phone and showed me a message.

*YOUR FAMILY HAS ALREADY LOST ONE DAUGHTER. DON'T MAKE US LOSE ANOTHER.*

My stomach tightened.

"Who sent this?""

"An encrypted account connected to Whitmore.""

I stared at the screen.

Jonathan continued.

"I knew you were at Dad's retirement party. I saw the news coverage of the investigation. I thought if I could get you the original files, there might still be time to stop them.""

I looked at him.

"You could have come to me five years ago.""

"I know.""

"Why didn't you?""

His eyes filled.

"Because I watched the company pay for what I did. I watched Dad become richer. I watched Celeste buy everything she wanted. And every time I thought about telling the truth, I remembered that I had been the one who locked that door.""

His voice broke.

"I heard your voice over the system, Evelyn.""

I went still.

"What?""

"I heard you asking why the door wouldn't open.""

My throat tightened.

"You heard me?""

He nodded.

"I tried to reverse the override. It wouldn't work.""

"Then what did you do?""

He looked down.

"I disconnected the terminal.""

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

"You disconnected the terminal while I was inside?""

"I panicked.""

I stepped away from him.

"Eleven men were screaming in that compartment.""

"I know.""

"I was begging for help.""

"I know.""

"And you walked away.""

He covered his face.

I wanted to scream.

I wanted to hit him.

Instead, I turned toward the door.

"Let's go.""

At the naval club, federal agents secured the building and located the private storage terminal in a locked administrative room.

Jonathan provided the access credentials.

Within minutes, the archive was recovered.

The first documents confirmed the false inspection reports.

The second set contained financial transactions.

The third contained the original communications between Victoria, Whitmore, Shaw, and my father.

But the final folder had a different title.

*PROJECT HARRINGTON — WITNESS MANAGEMENT.*

Mercer opened it.

Inside were personnel records.

Mine.

Peter Lawson's.

And eleven separate files belonging to the sailors rescued from the Meridian.

Each file contained personal information, medical records, and instructions for monitoring the individual after the incident.

I looked at Mercer.

"They were tracking the survivors?""

He nodded grimly.

"Apparently.""

I opened one file.

Petty Officer Daniel Brooks.

The file included a note:

Subject must not be contacted by Captain Harrington.

Another read:

Offer financial settlement in exchange for silence.

My hands began shaking.

They hadn't just tried to bury the equipment failure.

They had tried to control every person who could testify about it.

Then Jonathan opened another document.

It was an internal message dated two days after the fire.

The sender was Victoria Hale.

The recipient was Admiral Whitmore.

*The original witness remains alive. Recommend permanent separation from family and operational duties.*

I stared at the screen.

My brother whispered.

"That's what they did to you.""

Mercer continued scrolling.

A second message appeared.

This one was sent three months later.

*If she attempts to return, activate the Harrington contingency.*

I felt a chill.

"What contingency?""

Mercer opened the attachment.

It was a photograph of a medical report.

My medical report.

But someone had added a handwritten statement claiming I had attempted suicide during recovery.

I stared at it.

"I never attempted suicide.""

Mercer nodded.

"We'll verify the original hospital records.""

Then Jonathan noticed another attachment.

He clicked it.

A video appeared.

The image showed a hospital corridor.

A nurse pushed an empty wheelchair past a door.

A man in a dark suit stood near the nurses' station.

I recognized him.

My father.

The date was five years earlier.

The video showed him entering my hospital room.

He remained inside for eleven minutes.

When he came out, he was carrying a small envelope.

I looked at him through the screen.

"Why were you there?""

My father had been standing behind us.

He looked exhausted.

"I came to see you.""

"Why didn't you wake me?""

He swallowed.

"You were asleep.""

I pointed to the envelope.

"What did you take?""

He closed his eyes.

"The original report.""

I stared at him.

"You stole the evidence from my hospital room?""

"I thought I was protecting you.""

I couldn't believe it.

"You took the only thing that could prove what happened.""

He nodded.

"I was afraid.""

Before I could respond, Mercer's phone rang.

He listened carefully.

Then he turned toward us.

"We've located Victoria Hale.""

"Where?"" I asked.

"She's at the headquarters of Harrington Defense.""

"Is she under arrest?""

Mercer shook his head.

"Not yet.""

He looked at the video still on the screen.

"She's requested a meeting with the Navy.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

Mercer lowered his voice.

"Because she claims she has evidence that could implicate Admiral Reed in the entire operation.""

I turned toward the admiral.

Reed's face had become unreadable.

Then he said quietly:

May you like

"She's bluffing.""

But his hands were shaking.
