Chapter 5: The Call at 11:47
“Tell me what happened at 11:47.””
My voice was quiet, but my mother flinched as if I'd shouted.
She sank onto the sofa.
Chloe stood near the door, clutching her handbag against her chest.
Nathan positioned himself beside me.
Olivia quietly asked Sarah to keep the other wedding staff away from the room.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Mom whispered, “Your father called me that night.””
I sat down opposite her.
“What did he say?””
“He told me he'd found proof that Daniel had been moving money from the estate accounts. He wanted me to bring the original property deeds to his office.””
“Why?””
“He believed Daniel was planning to transfer the property without permission.””
“Did you go?””
Mom nodded.
“Your father was already there when I arrived. Daniel came about twenty minutes later.””
Chloe suddenly interrupted.
“Mom, you don't have to tell her this.””
I turned toward her.
“Why not?””
“Because you're going to twist everything.””
“I'm asking what happened to my father!””
My sister rolled her eyes.
“Dad died years ago, Emily. You can't bring him back by turning everyone into a criminal.””
Nathan's expression hardened.
“That's enough.””
Mom continued.
“They argued. Your father accused Daniel of forging documents. Daniel said your father was trying to ruin his life.””
“And then?””
“Your father told Daniel he was going to the authorities the next morning.””
I gripped the edge of the sofa.
“Did Daniel hurt him?””
Mom began shaking her head.
“I don't know.””
“You were there!””
“I left before midnight.””
“Why?””
“Your father told me to take you girls home. He said he needed to finish something privately.””
I stared at her.
“You left him alone with Daniel?””
She started sobbing.
“I thought he'd be fine.””
“And at 11:47?””
Mom covered her mouth.
“My phone rang. It was Daniel.””
“What did he say?””
“He told me your father had collapsed.””
I felt the room grow colder.
“Did you call an ambulance?””
Mom didn't answer immediately.
That silence was worse than anything she'd said.
“Mom?””
“He told me not to.””
I stood so quickly that the sofa shifted behind my knees.
“He told you not to call an ambulance?””
“He said your father was already gone. He said there would be questions about the financial documents and that the police would suspect me because I'd signed some transfers.””
“So you listened to him?””
“I was frightened!””
“You let Dad die!””
The words escaped before I could stop them.
Mom began crying uncontrollably.
Nathan wrapped an arm around my shoulders.
“Emily, breathe.””
But I couldn't.
I remembered being twelve years old, sitting on the stairs while Mom told me Dad had died peacefully in his sleep.
I remembered asking whether he'd been scared.
She'd held my face and said no.
Now I wondered whether she'd ever told me a single truthful thing about that night.
Olivia approached the sofa.
“Margaret, did you ever receive a copy of the emergency report?””
Mom nodded.
“Daniel gave me one.””
“Where is it?””
“In a storage box.””
“Do you still have it?””
Mom looked at Chloe.
My sister immediately shook her head.
“Don't bring me into this.””
I turned toward her.
“Why would Mom look at you?””
Chloe's eyes flashed.
“Because I found the box!””
“When?””
“Years ago.””
“What did you do with it?””
She hesitated.
Then she said something that made my stomach turn.
“I gave the papers to Daniel.””
Nathan stepped forward.
“You what?””
“He said they were old documents. He said they didn't matter.””
“Why would you give him evidence about our father's death?””
Chloe threw her hands up.
“I was trying to help!””
“Help whom?””
She looked directly at me.
“You never understand anything. Grandma was going to leave everything to you. Daniel promised he could change that.””
I stared at her.
“Change it how?””
Chloe swallowed.
“He said if the wedding didn't happen, the trust would be reviewed.””
Olivia frowned.
“That's impossible. The trust has no marriage-related condition.””
Chloe looked away.
Daniel had lied to her, too.
I took the photograph from the vanity.
“Why did you destroy my dress?””
Her face twisted.
“Because I wanted Nathan to postpone the wedding.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel told me the estate transfer would become complicated once you married.””
Nathan stared at her.
“That's not how inheritance works.””
“I didn't know that!””
“You didn't think to ask?””
Chloe's eyes filled with tears, but I couldn't tell whether they were genuine.
Then she reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“I have something else.””
She placed it on the vanity.
It was a photocopy of a bank transfer.
The amount was $250,000.
The sender was a company called Mercer Holdings.
The recipient was Chloe Bennett.
Nathan looked at the date.
“Yesterday?””
Chloe nodded.
“Daniel paid me to stop the wedding.””
The room fell silent.
My sister's voice dropped.
“He said the money was an advance. He promised me another two hundred and fifty thousand once Emily signed the estate documents.””
I stared at her.
“You sold my wedding day for half a million dollars?””
Chloe looked down.
“I thought I was finally getting what I deserved.””
Before I could answer, Nathan's phone rang again.
This time, the caller was an unknown number.
He answered.
A woman's voice spoke urgently.
“Mr. Reed? This is Dr.
Helen Foster. I'm calling about the old medical records you requested.””
Nathan frowned.
“What medical records?””
There was a pause.
Then the woman said:
“The hospital file concerning Richard Bennett's death. There's a discrepancy in the official report.””
I grabbed Nathan's arm.
“What discrepancy?””
He put the call on speaker.
The doctor continued.
“The original report states that Mr. Bennett was brought to the hospital at 12:18 a.m. However, the amended copy lists his arrival time as 1:06 a.m.””
Mom covered her mouth.
The doctor added one more sentence.
“And according to the original emergency notes, your father was still alive when he arrived.””
I couldn't move.

Then the doctor said:
“Emily, there's something else. Someone removed two pages from his original medical file.””
