Chapter 14: My Grandmother's Final Trap

Olivia placed the document on the bedside table.

It was a delivery record from Maison Laurent.

The gown I'd worn that morning had been commissioned by my grandmother two years earlier.

But the document contained an additional instruction.

If the gown is damaged deliberately before the ceremony, release the sealed evidence package to both beneficiaries.

I stared at her.

“Grandma knew someone might destroy it?””

Olivia nodded.

“She suspected Daniel would attempt to interfere with your wedding. She also knew Chloe had been approached by someone connected to him.””

Chloe lowered her head.

“I didn't know Grandma knew.””

“Eleanor knew more than you think,” Olivia replied.

She opened the leather folder and removed a small silver key.

“Your grandmother left me instructions to open a safe deposit box once both sisters were present.””

Nathan frowned.

“What is inside?””

“The original deed, the missing medical records, and a recorded statement from the person who arranged Richard's disappearance.””

Mom stepped backward.

“Who made the recording?””

Olivia looked at her.

“You did.””

My mother began shaking.

“No.””

Olivia placed a small envelope beside the key.

“Eleanor kept a copy of your statement. She recorded it because you were afraid Daniel would make you change your story.””

Mom sank into a chair.

I stared at her.

“You confessed?””

“I was trying to protect your father.””

“Then why didn't you tell the police?””

“Because Daniel threatened to have Chloe arrested for the forged transfers.””

Chloe looked up.

“Mom…”

Margaret began crying.

“He showed me documents with your signature. He said he could prove you had helped him steal the money. I thought I could protect you both by keeping quiet.””

I shook my head.

“You protected the people who hurt us.””

Mom covered her face.

Olivia continued.

“Eleanor wanted both daughters to hear the complete truth before either inherited full control of the estate.””

“Why?”” I asked.

“Because she believed the family could only move forward if both of you understood what had happened.””

Chloe looked at the floor.

“And if one of us refused?””

Olivia answered quietly.

“Then the trust would remain under independent administration until the dispute was resolved.””

I understood.

Grandma hadn't wanted either of us to inherit the estate through jealousy, manipulation, or pressure.

She wanted us to know what it cost to keep it.

Nathan checked his phone.

“We need to get that evidence before Thomas destroys anything.””

Olivia nodded.

“I've already contacted Eleanor's attorney. He's meeting us at the bank.””

Dad reached for my hand.

“Emily, I want to go.””

“You should rest.””

“I've spent twenty years resting when other people decided I should. I'm going.””

I smiled through my tears.

“Then we'll go together.””

An hour later, we entered a private office at a downtown bank.

Eleanor's attorney, a gray-haired man named Samuel Brooks, was waiting beside a secure document case.

He greeted Dad with a long embrace.

“Richard. I thought I'd never see you again.””

Dad squeezed his shoulder.

“Neither did I.””

Samuel unlocked the case.

Inside were three folders, a flash drive, and a sealed envelope.

“The original deed,” he explained, “remains legally valid. No transfer to Mercer Holdings was ever completed.””

I exhaled.

“What about the financial documents?””

Samuel opened the second folder.

“These records show that Daniel and Thomas diverted nearly four million dollars through shell companies. The transactions were disguised as construction expenses.””

Nathan leaned forward.

“And the payment from my father?””

Samuel nodded.

“Richard Reed funded part of the operation. He also paid Thomas Whitaker to maintain the false medical records and prevent Richard Bennett from returning home.””

Nathan looked devastated.

“I need to confront him.””

Samuel placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Not before we secure the evidence.””

He inserted the flash drive into his laptop.

A recording appeared.

My mother's face filled the screen.

She was younger, thinner, and visibly frightened.

Her voice trembled.

“Daniel told me Richard had died. When I discovered he was still alive, Thomas threatened to report me for the fraudulent transfers. He said my daughters would be taken away.””

The recording continued.

“I signed the guardianship documents because they promised Richard would receive medical care. But I never authorized anyone to keep him hidden permanently.””

Then Mom said something that made Chloe cover her mouth.

“Daniel told me that if Richard ever returned, he would tell the girls that their father had abandoned them willingly. He wanted them to hate him.””

I looked at Dad.

He lowered his head.

The recording ended.

Samuel opened the final folder.

“This is the most important document.””

It was a medical report.

The original toxicology request had been attached.

There was also a signed statement from a former nurse confirming that Dad had arrived alive at the private facility.

But the final page contained something even more disturbing.

A payment authorization.

The money had been transferred to the private facility by Mercer Holdings.

And the person who approved the payment was Thomas Whitaker.

Samuel looked at us.

“There's enough here to support a formal investigation into fraud, forgery, unlawful confinement, and the falsification of medical records. The relevant authorities will need to determine the full extent of everyone's responsibility.””

Chloe began crying.

“Will I go to prison?””

Samuel looked at her.

“That depends on what you did, what you knew, and whether you cooperate fully.””

She nodded.

“I'll tell them everything.””

I looked at her.

“Even about the dress?””

She swallowed.

“Yes.””

For the first time, she wasn't making excuses.

Then Samuel handed me the sealed envelope.

“Your grandmother left this for you personally.””

I opened it.

Inside was a final handwritten letter.

Emily, my darling girl,

I know your wedding day may not have unfolded as you imagined. But remember something: a marriage should never begin with fear, and a family should never be built on secrets.

I wiped my eyes.

The house is yours and Chloe's equally. The estate must remain in both your names, but neither of you should ever be forced to sacrifice your future to protect it.

The final paragraph was short.

And Emily, if Nathan has stayed beside you through all this, tell him something from me. A good man doesn't prove his love by promising you a perfect life. He proves it by standing beside you when the truth becomes difficult.

I looked at Nathan.

He was crying.

Then my phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice spoke.

“Emily Bennett? This is Detective Harris. We've located Daniel Mercer.””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Where?””

“At the estate.””

“What's he doing there?””

There was a brief pause.

“He's attempting to remove several boxes from your grandmother's private study.””

I looked at Samuel.

“Has he been arrested?””

“Not yet. But there's one more issue.””

“What?””

“The person helping him is your fiancé's father.””

Nathan went completely still.

Then the detective added:

“Mr. Reed has just attempted to destroy the original property records.””
