Chapter 4: The Fire Alarm Wasn't an Accident
The fire alarm screamed through the fourth-floor corridor, drowning out the sound of my own breathing.
Red emergency lights flashed overhead. Somewhere below us, guests were shouting as hotel staff directed them toward the exits.
I stared at the dead phone in my hand.
Catherine had been alive. She had just spoken to me. And now she was warning me that Daniel Mercer was coming for me.
“Evelyn, get Lily and Noah out of here,” I ordered.
“Use the east stairwell.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“I'm not leaving you alone, Richard.””
“That wasn't a request.””
“And I'm telling you that separating you from the children is exactly what someone would want.””
Before I could respond, Lily grabbed my jacket.
“Dad, she's right. Mom said Daniel always separates people before he takes them.””
The words chilled me.
I looked at the hallway camera above Room 417. Its small green indicator had gone dark.
“Evelyn, are the cameras down?””
She checked her radio.
“Fourth-floor surveillance just went offline. The control room says they lost the basement feeds first.””
“Someone disabled them deliberately.””
A hotel employee hurried toward us, coughing into his sleeve.
“Mr. Whitmore, we need everyone to evacuate immediately. There's smoke near the lower service corridor.””
“Has the fire department been called?””
“Yes, sir.””
Evelyn drew her weapon and moved toward the stairwell.
“Stay behind me. All of you.””
We had barely reached the emergency exit when a security guard stumbled through the doorway from the stairs.
His shirt was torn, and blood trickled from a cut above his eye.
“Evelyn!”” he gasped.
“Someone's inside the basement.””
“Who?””
“I couldn't see his face. He knocked out two officers near the loading dock.””
I caught the guard's arm.
“Did he come through the tunnel?””
The guard looked at me.
“How did you know about the tunnel?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lily whispered, “Daniel.””
Evelyn immediately called for additional officers.
“Lock down the basement entrances. Nobody enters without authorization.””
The guard shook his head.
“It's too late. He took a master key.””
I looked at the children. Noah had gone pale, while Lily held his hand so tightly that their knuckles were white.
I had spent three years imagining the men who might have taken my family. I had pictured strangers, criminals, desperate people who had stumbled into our lives by accident.
I had never imagined that the man responsible had once sat across from me in a conference room while Victoria explained why we should settle his employment dispute quietly.
I had signed the settlement.
I had signed his silence.
And now he was inside the hotel.
“Richard,” Evelyn said, “we need to move.””
We descended one flight before a man appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
He wore a hotel maintenance uniform and a black cap pulled low over his face.
Evelyn raised her weapon.
“Stop right there! Hands where I can see them!””
The man froze.
Then he smiled.
Even from several yards away, I recognized the scar running along his jaw.
Daniel Mercer.
He lifted his hands slowly.
“Mr. Whitmore. It's been a long time.””
I stepped forward before Evelyn could stop me.
“Where is my wife?””
Daniel's smile widened.
“Still asking the wrong questions.””
“Where is Catherine?””
“Alive. For now.””
Lily made a strangled sound behind me.
Daniel glanced at her.
“Hello, Lily. You've grown up.””
She pressed herself against Evelyn.
“Stay away from me!””
He shrugged as if she had insulted him.
“Your mother should have taught you not to run away from people who are trying to help.””
“You kidnapped us!”” Lily screamed.
“I kept you safe.””
“From whom?””
Daniel's eyes shifted toward me.
“From your father.””
I lunged, but Evelyn caught my chest and shoved me back.
“Don't move, Richard!””
Daniel reached into his pocket.
“Relax. If I wanted you dead, we wouldn't be having this conversation.””
He pulled out a small remote control.
A metallic click sounded behind us.
The stairwell door slammed shut.
Evelyn immediately tried the handle.
Locked.
Daniel laughed softly.
“Victoria always said you were smart, Evelyn. It's a shame you never learned when to stop asking questions.””
“Put the remote down,” Evelyn ordered.
“Or what? You'll shoot me in front of the children?””
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then the fire alarm stopped.
The silence was worse.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Richard, I came here to offer you a deal. Give me the original financial records Catherine stole, and I'll tell you where she is.””
“I don't have them.””
“Then you'll have to find them.””
“Why don't you tell me what you want?””
His expression hardened.
“Because your wife hid something that could destroy people far more powerful than Victoria Hale.””
He looked at Lily again.
“And your daughter knows where it is.””
Lily shook her head frantically.
“I don't know anything!””
Daniel took one step toward her.
Evelyn fired a warning shot into the ceiling.
“Back away!””
Daniel flinched, then pressed the remote.
A heavy mechanical rumble echoed beneath our feet.
The stairwell began filling with gray smoke.
Noah started coughing.
I grabbed him and pulled him close.
Daniel backed through a narrow maintenance door behind him.
“Midnight, Richard. Bring the records to the old railway warehouse on Marietta Street. Come alone.””
“Wait!””
He paused.
“Tell Catherine I heard her message.””
Daniel's smile vanished.
For the first time, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.
“What message?””
I stepped forward.
“The one she left in Room 417.””
Daniel stared at me for two long seconds.
Then he disappeared through the maintenance door.
Evelyn dragged us toward an emergency release lever while the smoke thickened around us.
When we finally forced the stairwell door open, firefighters were already entering from the lower floors.
We stumbled into a protected corridor, coughing and gasping.
I thought the immediate danger had passed.
Then Lily reached into her pocket and pulled out a small black device.
“Dad,” she whispered, “I took this from Daniel when he was standing behind you.””
I stared at the object.
It was a digital voice recorder.
And when Lily pressed play, Catherine's voice emerged from the tiny speaker.
“Richard, if you're hearing this, Daniel has found you.””
A pause followed.

Then my wife said something that made Evelyn lower her weapon.
“Whatever he tells you about our daughter, don't believe him.””
