Chapter 10: The Truth About My Daughter
For several seconds, nobody moved.
I stared at the envelope in Evelyn's hand, then at Catherine, who looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath her feet.
“The girl is not your biological daughter.””
My father's handwriting had never looked so cruel.
I turned toward my wife.
“Catherine, what does this mean?””
She pressed a hand against her mouth.
“Richard, please. Let me explain.””
“Explain what? That Lily isn't mine?””
“She's your daughter in every way that matters.””
“That's not what I asked.””
Catherine looked down at the concrete floor. Her shoulders trembled, but she didn't cry.
That frightened me more than tears would have.
Evelyn quietly led the two officers outside the chamber, leaving the door open.
“I'll be right outside,” she said.
When we were alone, I placed the letter on the desk.
“Did you know?””
Catherine nodded.
“How long?””
“Since before Lily was born.””
I took a step backward.
For sixteen years, I had believed that the day Lily entered our lives was the happiest day of my life. I remembered holding her at the hospital, counting her tiny fingers, and promising her that nothing would ever hurt her.
Now my father was telling me that the child I had raised wasn't biologically mine.
“Who is her father?””
Catherine closed her eyes.
“Daniel Mercer.””
The name struck me like a physical blow.
I gripped the edge of the desk.
“Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“The man who kidnapped you? The man who kept our daughter from me for three years?””
“He wasn't the man I knew when Lily was conceived.””
“That's supposed to make this better?””
“No.”” Her voice cracked.
“Nothing about this makes it better.””
I turned away, staring at the old tape recorder.
Catherine continued.
“Before you and I married, I worked for a security company that investigated financial fraud. Daniel was assigned to my team. We were young, and I made a terrible mistake.””
She wiped her cheeks.
“When I discovered I was pregnant, Daniel had already left the company. I was terrified. Then I met you, and you gave me something I had never experienced before.
You gave me a home. You made me believe that I could build a family without being haunted by my past.””
“So you let me believe Lily was mine.””
“I loved you.””
“That isn't an answer.””
“No,” she whispered.
“It isn't.””
I thought about every birthday, every school recital, every bedtime story. Lily had my surname, my photographs on her bedroom wall, and my hand-me-down traditions.
She had never been anything less than my daughter.
But I couldn't stop wondering why Catherine had hidden the truth.
“Did my father know?””
“He found out when Lily was two. He had access to private records through the security network. He confronted me and threatened to tell you.””
I looked at the envelope.
“Then why didn't he?””
“Because he discovered that Daniel was connected to Martin's operation. He believed that revealing Lily's biological father would put her in danger.””
I let out a bitter laugh.
“So my father kept a secret that could destroy my marriage, while Martin used the same secret to control everyone around us.””
Catherine nodded.
“I wanted to tell you. I tried several times. But every time I came close, Daniel or Victoria appeared somewhere in our lives. I became afraid that Lily would be taken away.””
I looked at her.
“And then she was.””
“Yes.””
The silence between us felt enormous.
I wanted to hate Catherine for lying. I wanted to blame Daniel for everything. Most of all, I wanted my father to be alive so I could ask him why he had allowed our family to become a battlefield.
Instead, I picked up the cassette.
“What's on this?””
Catherine wiped her face.
“Your father's final recording. He said it contained the names of everyone involved in the network.””
I placed the cassette into the recorder.
A click sounded.
Then my father's voice filled the chamber.
“Richard, if you're hearing this, Martin has betrayed you. I'm sorry. I should have stopped him years ago.””
My knees weakened.
My father sounded older than I remembered, his voice rough and tired.
“I built the original security network to protect people who were threatened by powerful men. At first, we helped witnesses escape dangerous situations. We moved families to safe locations and kept their identities confidential.””
A pause followed.
“Then Martin discovered how much money could be made by controlling who was allowed to speak.””
The recording crackled.
“He began selling information to the people we were supposed to expose. Victoria managed the payments. Daniel handled operations. And I allowed it to continue because I believed I could contain the damage.””
I covered my mouth.
My father continued.
“I was wrong.””
Then his voice changed.
“There's one more thing you need to know, Richard. Martin didn't discover Catherine's investigation by accident. Someone inside your home was reporting her movements.””
Catherine stiffened beside me.
My father named the person.
“Your housekeeper, Margaret Ellis.””
I remembered Margaret. She had worked for our family for nearly twenty years and had helped raise Lily.
But my father wasn't finished.
“Margaret believed she was protecting the family. Martin threatened her son and convinced her that Catherine was planning to take Lily away from you. She provided the information that allowed Martin to locate them.””
The recording ended with a long hiss.
I stood motionless.
Our home had never been safe.
The people I trusted had been watching my wife, tracking my daughter, and deciding which parts of my life I was allowed to know.
Catherine touched my arm.
“Richard?””
I pulled away, not because I wanted to hurt her, but because I didn't know how to stand beside her without falling apart.
Then a noise came from the staircase.
Footsteps.
Fast ones.
Evelyn appeared in the doorway, her weapon raised.
“Richard, we have a problem.””
“What happened?””
“Margaret Ellis is outside. She says she has information about Martin.””
Catherine went completely pale.
“That's impossible.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
May you like
Catherine stared toward the stairs.
“Because Margaret died six months ago.””
