Chapter 14: The Choice That Saved Lily

I didn’t confront Amanda immediately.

Not because I trusted her.

Because I had learned something important.

The truth mattered more than anger.

And the truth needed all the pieces.

Detective Morgan brought Amanda in for questioning.

I sat behind the glass.

Watching.

Waiting.

Amanda looked exhausted.

Like someone who had carried guilt for too long.

The detective placed the recording on the table.

“Did you say these words?””

Amanda listened.

Then closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

The detective leaned forward.

“Explain.””

Amanda took a deep breath.

“I was trying to scare Rebecca.””

“That’s not what it sounds like.””

“I know.””

“Why would you say something like that?””

Amanda looked down.

“Because I knew she was dangerous.””

The room went quiet.

“I had already seen what she did to Emma.””

She swallowed.

“And I knew she was becoming obsessed with Lily.””

The detective studied her.

“So you played along.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought I could get close enough to stop her.””

I stared through the glass.

A familiar anger returned.

Because even if her intentions were different…

She still made decisions without telling me.

She still left Lily in danger.

The detective asked:

“Why didn’t you contact Daniel?””

Amanda’s answer was barely audible.

“Because Rebecca convinced me he wouldn’t believe me.””

I froze.

The same words.

The same weapon.

Rebecca didn’t just control children.

She controlled adults.

She made people doubt themselves.

After the interview, Amanda asked to speak with me.

I almost said no.

But I agreed.

She sat across from me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“I believe you wanted to help.””

Her eyes filled.

“But?””

“But you failed Lily too.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“You don’t get to disappear when things become difficult.””

“I know.””

“You don’t get to decide what’s best for her without asking.””

“I know.””

The fact that she accepted it made the anger harder.

Because I wanted someone to fight back.

I wanted someone to blame.

But sometimes people could hurt you without being evil.

Sometimes people were just broken.

“I want to earn her trust,” Amanda whispered.

I looked away.

“That’s not my decision.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

Later that day, Lily asked me a question.

“Is Rebecca going to jail?””

I sat beside her.

“I don’t know.””

“Is she still my mom?””

I took a breath.

“She was someone who was supposed to take care of you.””

Lily looked down.

“Why didn’t she?””

I didn’t have an answer.

The next morning was the court hearing.

The room was quiet.

Rebecca sat across from us.

She looked different.

Not because she had changed.

Because everyone could finally see her.

The judge reviewed the evidence.

The diary.

The recordings.

The files.

The reports.

Then Rebecca spoke.

“I loved Emma.””

Everyone became silent.

“I loved Lily too.””

I looked at her.

She started crying.

“I just wanted to understand why I failed.””

The judge listened.

Rebecca continued.

“I thought if I proved they were the same, maybe I wasn’t the reason.””

There it was.

The truth.

Not an excuse.

Not forgiveness.

Just the reason behind the damage.

After the hearing, Rebecca looked at Lily.

“Can I say something?””

The room went still.

Lily looked at me.

I nodded.

Rebecca knelt down.

“I’m sorry.””

Lily said nothing.

“I know sorry doesn’t fix anything.””

Still nothing.

Rebecca’s voice broke.

“I should have protected you.””

For the first time, Lily looked directly at her.

Then she said:

“You scared me.””

Rebecca closed her eyes.

“I know.””

Lily held my hand.

And that was all.

No dramatic forgiveness.

No perfect ending.

Just a child finally being believed.

Weeks later, I received a package.

No return address.

Inside was Emma’s original diary.

And one final page I had never seen.

It wasn’t written by Emma.

It was written by Rebecca.

One sentence.

“I don’t know how to stop becoming the person I hate.””

I stared at it.

Because that was the tragedy.

May you like

Rebecca knew something was wrong.

She just kept choosing to continue.
