Chapter 13: The Last Truth Emma Left Behind
I read Emma’s letter three times.
Not because I didn’t understand the words.
Because I couldn’t accept them.
“Please don’t let her make another little girl disappear.””
A child had written those words.
A child who knew something was wrong.
A child who had been trying to warn someone.
And somehow, years later, another little girl was standing in the same darkness.
Amanda sat across from me, crying silently.
“She gave me that letter months ago,” she whispered.
I looked up.
“Rebecca?””
Amanda nodded.
“She wanted me to read it.””
“Why?””
“She said she wanted me to understand why she was afraid of Lily.””
My hands tightened around the paper.
“She wasn’t afraid of Lily.””
“No.””
Amanda shook her head.
“She was afraid of what Lily reminded her of.””
The truth was becoming clearer.
Rebecca had spent six years trying to rewrite Emma’s story.
She needed Emma to be difficult.
Dangerous.
Impossible to control.
Because if Emma was just a scared little girl…
Then Rebecca had to face what she had done.
And she couldn’t.
So she found another child.
Another little girl.
Another chance to prove she wasn’t the problem.
I looked at Amanda.
“Why did you keep the letter?””
She looked down.
“Because I was ashamed.””
“Of what?””
“Because I knew I had a responsibility.””
The answer surprised me.
Amanda wiped her eyes.
“I left Lily. I told myself it was because I was broken. Because Daniel, after everything happened, I thought you would be better without me.””
I didn’t respond.
Because part of me was still angry.
A child did not need a perfect mother.
She needed a mother who stayed.
“I should have told you,” Amanda whispered.
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
For the first time, she didn’t defend herself.
No excuses.
No explanations.
Just the truth.
When I returned home that evening, Lily was sitting on the living room floor.
She was drawing again.
I sat beside her.
“What are you making?””
She held up the paper.
A family.
This time there were three people.
Me.
Her.
And another figure standing a little farther away.
“Who’s that?””
She looked nervous.
“That’s Mommy.””
My heart tightened.
“You want to see her?””
Lily shrugged.
“I don’t know.””
That answer hurt.
Because children shouldn’t have to choose between parents.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Am I going to have to go away?””
I immediately shook my head.
“No.””
“But Rebecca said people would take me away.””
I froze.
“When did she say that?””
“After I told Ms. Patterson.””
My stomach dropped.
“What else did she say?””
Lily looked down.
“She said if everyone knew the truth, nobody would want me.””
I pulled her into my arms.
“Listen to me.””
She looked up.
“Nothing you say can make people stop loving you.””
She nodded.
But I knew fear didn’t disappear because someone said the right words.
Fear had to be replaced by safety.
That night, Detective Morgan called.
“We arrested Rebecca.””
I closed my eyes.
“Okay.””
“There’s something else.””
I waited.
“Her attorney claims she wants to cooperate.””
I almost laughed.
“Why?””
“Because she says she has proof Amanda was involved.””
I went still.
“What?””
“She claims Amanda helped create the situation.””
My stomach tightened.
“Is it true?””
“We’re investigating.””
I looked toward Lily’s bedroom.
The last thing she needed was another adult battle.
Another person making her feel like a problem.
“What kind of proof?””
Detective Morgan hesitated.
“A recording.””
“Of what?””
“Of Amanda telling Rebecca she wanted Lily taken away.””
I felt cold.
“That can’t be right.””
“I don’t know yet.””
After the call ended, I sat in darkness.
For years, I believed my family fell apart because people made mistakes.
But maybe mistakes weren’t the whole story.
Maybe some people made choices.
The next morning, Detective Morgan sent me the recording.
I pressed play.
Amanda’s voice filled the room.
“I can’t do this anymore.””
Rebecca answered.
“Then let me handle it.””
Amanda sounded exhausted.
“I just want her safe.””
Rebecca replied:
“You don’t understand what Daniel sees when he looks at her.””
A pause.
Then Amanda said:
“Maybe he shouldn’t have custody.””
My heart sank.
The recording ended.
I stared at my phone.
Because now I had one question.
May you like
Was Amanda trying to protect Lily?
Or had she been willing to lose her daughter all over again?
