Chapter 12: The Mother Who Came Back Too Late

Amanda’s phone sat on the table between us.

A small object.

But somehow it carried years of damage.

“She recorded conversations with Rebecca,” Detective Morgan said.

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“We’re still determining that.””

Rebecca looked nervous.

For the first time, truly nervous.

“What conversations?””

Detective Morgan didn’t answer her.

He unlocked the phone.

“We found dozens of audio files.””

He pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then Rebecca’s voice.

“You need to understand. Daniel can’t see what she is.””

My heart dropped.

Amanda’s voice followed.

“She’s seven years old, Rebecca.””

Rebecca replied:

“Emma was seven too.””

The recording stopped.

I looked at Rebecca.

“You said that?””

She looked away.

The detective played another.

Amanda sounded angry.

“You’re projecting.””

Rebecca’s voice was colder.

“No. I’m recognizing patterns.””

The recording ended.

I closed my eyes.

She had been warned.

Someone had told her.

And she continued anyway.

“How long did Amanda know?”” I asked.

Detective Morgan looked at the phone.

“Months.””

I felt betrayed all over again.

Amanda had known.

Rebecca had known.

Everyone had known something.

Except me.

The father who was supposed to protect Lily.

I stood up.

“I need to find her.””

Detective Morgan nodded.

“We’re working on it.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I need to talk to her.””

An hour later, we found Amanda.

She was sitting alone in a small motel room outside the city.

When she opened the door and saw me, she started crying.

“Daniel.””

I didn’t move.

“You knew.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

“You knew Rebecca was doing this to Lily.””

“I suspected.””

“You suspected?””

My voice broke.

“She locked our daughter in a kennel.””

Amanda covered her face.

“I know.””

“You knew before I did.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She had no answer.

And that was the worst part.

Finally, she whispered:

“Because I was afraid.””

I stared at her.

“Afraid of what?””

“That you would hate me.””

I laughed quietly.

“You were worried about yourself?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I was worried you would look at Lily and see me.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Amanda wiped her tears.

“I thought if I came back, I would ruin her life again.””

The anger in me softened slightly.

But not enough.

“You still made a choice.””

“I know.””

She looked at me.

“I was wrong.””

Silence.

Then she reached into a drawer.

She pulled out a notebook.

“Rebecca gave me copies of Emma’s files.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

“She wanted me to help her.””

“With what?””

Amanda looked terrified.

“With proving Lily needed to be removed from your care.””

The room went silent.

My heart stopped.

“She wanted custody?””

Amanda nodded.

“She believed you were too attached to Lily to see the truth.””

I looked at the notebook.

“What is this?””

“The evidence she planned to use.””

I opened it.

Inside were notes.

Photos.

Observations.

But near the back, there was something different.

A handwritten letter.

Not from Rebecca.

Not from Amanda.

From Emma.

My hands shook as I unfolded it.

The first line made my breath catch.

“Dear Daddy Daniel…”

I froze.

Because Emma never had a Daddy Daniel.

Not until Rebecca married me.

I looked up.

Amanda’s face had gone pale.

“Daniel…”

I read the next sentence.

And every piece of the puzzle finally started coming together.

“Mommy says she found a new daddy who will love Lily more than he loved me.””

I stopped.

The letter continued.

“I think she wants Lily to feel what I felt.””

I looked at Amanda.

Then at the page.

The final sentence was written in a child’s handwriting.

“Please don’t let her make another little girl disappear.””
