Chapter 9: My Father’s Final Recording

I didn’t open the flash drive that night.

Not immediately.

I wanted answers.

But I was also afraid of them.

Because for eighteen months, I had believed my father died peacefully.

I had believed there were no unfinished conversations.

No hidden warnings.

No secrets.

Now I was holding proof that he had something important to tell me.

Something he knew he might never get to say.

Paige sat beside me on the couch.

“Are you okay?””

I looked at the small drive in my hand.

“No.””

She reached for my shoulder.

“You don’t have to watch it alone.””

So we waited until Emma and Riley were asleep.

Then I plugged it into my laptop.

One video appeared.

The title was simple.

“Connor.””

My breathing stopped.

I clicked play.

The screen showed my father sitting in his office.

He looked older than I remembered.

Tired.

But still himself.

“Connor,” he said.

My eyes immediately filled with tears.

Hearing his voice again hurt.

“Son, if you’re watching this, then things didn’t go the way I hoped.””

He paused.

“I’m sorry.””

I covered my mouth.

Paige squeezed my hand.

My father continued.

“I spent my life believing family should protect each other. But I learned something important.””

He looked directly into the camera.

“Love without honesty becomes a weapon.””

I swallowed.

He knew.

He knew exactly what was happening.

“I discovered that money was being removed from accounts connected to the family. At first, I believed it was a mistake.””

He took a breath.

“It wasn’t.””

The video shook slightly.

Like he had recorded it himself.

“Daniel Walker has been manipulating Linda and Melissa for years.””

I looked at Paige.

There it was.

The truth.

My father continued.

“He convinced Melissa she was owed more. He convinced Linda she was protecting her daughter.””

He paused.

“But the person who suffered most would have been my grandchildren.””

My chest tightened.

My daughters.

“He attempted to change my estate documents.””

My hands curled into fists.

“But I stopped him.””

My father leaned closer.

“Connor, there is something you need to know.””

The screen went dark for a second.

Then his voice continued.

“If you find this recording, do not trust anyone who tells you they were protecting the family.””

I froze.

Because that included my mother.

The video continued.

“Protection without truth is just another form of betrayal.””

My father looked exhausted.

“But there is one thing I need you to understand.””

He smiled sadly.

“You have always been the strongest person in this family.””

I shook my head.

That wasn’t true.

I wasn’t the strongest.

I was the person who didn’t know.

“Do not let anger control you, Connor.””

The screen flickered.

“Your daughters are watching what you do next.””

That sentence broke me.

Because he was right.

Emma and Riley would learn from this.

They would learn whether pain meant revenge.

Or whether it meant standing up for yourself.

Then my father said the final words.

“The original documents are hidden somewhere only you would think to look.””

The video ended.

I sat frozen.

Rachel watched it the next morning.

When it finished, she immediately asked:

“Did your father ever have a place that was special to both of you?””

I thought.

A place only we knew.

Then I remembered.

The old workshop behind our childhood home.

The place where he taught me everything.

“The workshop.””

Rachel nodded.

“We need to search it.””

That afternoon, we drove there.

The house had been sold after my father died.

But the new owner allowed us to check the old workshop.

Inside, everything smelled like dust and old wood.

I ran my hand across the workbench.

Memories came rushing back.

My father standing beside me.

Teaching me.

Warning me.

A hidden compartment existed beneath the workbench.

I had forgotten about it.

But my father hadn’t.

Rachel opened it.

Inside was a sealed envelope.

My name was written across the front.

I picked it up.

My hands shook.

Because underneath my name was another sentence.

One my father had written carefully.

“If you found this, then you finally know who betrayed us.””

I opened the envelope.

The first document inside made Rachel gasp.

Because it wasn’t just proof of fraud.

It was a copy of a letter Daniel had written.

And at the bottom was a signature.

A signature that proved my father had been right all along.

Daniel wasn’t just stealing money.

He had planned everything.
