Chapter 13: The Stranger in My Father’s Records

The name on the bank record made me stop breathing.

I read it once.

Then again.

I waited for it to become something else.

A mistake.

A typo.

Anything.

But it didn’t change.

The payment had been made to:

Jonathan Pierce.

My father’s estate attorney.

I stared at the document in disbelief.

“Rachel.””

She looked at me.

“I know.””

“You knew?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I just received the complete records.””

My hands tightened around the paper.

Jonathan had been the person who called me.

The person who told me my daughters hadn’t received their inheritance.

The person who helped uncover the missing money.

Now his name was attached to another suspicious transaction.

“I don’t understand.””

Rachel leaned back.

“Neither do I.””

The room became silent.

After everything.

After Daniel.

After my mother.

After Melissa.

There was another person connected to my father’s final days.

“Could he have been working with them?”” I asked.

Rachel didn’t answer immediately.

“That’s what we need to find out.””

The next morning, we requested a meeting with Jonathan.

He arrived looking nervous.

Not defensive.

Nervous.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Rachel placed the bank record on the table.

“Can you explain this transaction?””

Jonathan looked down.

The color left his face.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he whispered:

“I wondered when you would find that.””

My heart sank.

“You knew?””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

I stood up.

“You knew someone was stealing from my daughters?””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“I knew someone was trying to.””

“Trying?””

He looked at me.

“Your father asked me to create a safeguard.””

I frowned.

“What safeguard?””

Jonathan opened his briefcase.

Inside was another file.

“My client suspected his family was being manipulated.””

He placed the file on the table.

“Your father hired me privately before his death.””

Rachel opened the folder.

Inside were notes.

Emails.

Legal drafts.

My father’s handwriting appeared everywhere.

Jonathan continued.

“Your father knew Linda and Melissa were under Daniel’s influence.””

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

Jonathan looked at me sadly.

“Because he believed Daniel would retaliate.””

I felt my anger soften.

My father wasn’t hiding the truth because he didn’t trust me.

He was hiding it because he loved me.

Jonathan pointed to the transaction.

“This payment was not to me personally.””

Rachel examined it.

“Then what was it?””

“A private investigation.””

I froze.

“My father hired an investigator?””

“Yes.””

Jonathan pulled out another document.

“The investigator discovered Daniel’s fraud.””

I looked through the pages.

There were records of meetings.

Copies of emails.

Photographs.

Everything.

Then I found the final report.

The date was three days before my father died.

The final paragraph said:

“Subject is planning to remove remaining assets before discovery.””

I looked at Jonathan.

“Why wasn’t this submitted earlier?””

His expression changed.

“Because the investigator disappeared.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

Jonathan nodded.

“Two days after sending this report.””

Rachel leaned forward.

“Did you report it?””

“Yes.””

“To whom?””

Jonathan looked uncomfortable.

“Your father.””

The room went quiet.

“You told my dying father?””

“I had no choice. He was still my client.””

I looked back at the report.

My father had known.

He knew the danger.

He knew the people around him were lying.

And still, he spent his final days protecting everyone.

Even the people who betrayed him.

That night, I returned home and found my mother waiting outside.

I almost ignored her.

But something stopped me.

“What do you want?””

She looked tired.

“I need to tell you something.””

I crossed my arms.

“What?””

She looked at the ground.

“Daniel wasn’t the one who first came up with the plan.””

My heart tightened.

“Then who?””

She looked at me.

“Me.””

The word hit harder than anything else.

“What?””

She started crying.

“I didn’t know how far he would take it.””

I stepped back.

“You helped him?””

“I thought I was saving Melissa.””

I shook my head.

“You sacrificed my daughters.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I know.””

I wanted to be angry.

I was angry.

But seeing her finally admit it was different.

She wasn’t defending herself anymore.

She was finally facing what she had done.

“Why tell me now?””

She wiped her tears.

“Because I found something.””

“What?””

She reached into her purse.

A small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Again.

My father’s handwriting.

I stared at it.

“Where did you get this?””

She looked away.

“Daniel gave it to me.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

Her answer was barely a whisper.

“Because he wanted me to destroy it.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was one final letter.

But this time, my father’s words weren’t a warning.

May you like

They were a message.

And the first sentence explained why he had never given up on my mother.
