Chapter 7: The Person Who Took My Father’s Box

I stared at the security photo until the details became impossible to ignore.

The person carrying my father’s storage box wasn’t my mother.

It wasn’t Melissa.

It was Daniel.

My sister’s husband.

The same man who laughed when my daughter whispered that she was hungry.

The same man who told me I should have fed my children before bringing them to dinner.

The same man who had acted like my family was beneath his.

I looked at Rachel.

“Are you sure?””

She nodded.

“The storage company confirmed the timestamp and the identity.””

“When was this taken?””

“Six months after your father passed away.””

I leaned back in my chair.

Six months.

Not days.

Not immediately after his death.

Six months.

That meant Daniel had gone back for something.

Something someone wanted hidden.

“Why would Daniel have access to my father’s belongings?”” I asked.

Rachel opened another file.

“Because your mother added him as an authorized person on several accounts after your father’s death.””

I felt my stomach turn.

“She gave him access?””

“Yes.””

I looked out the window.

The pieces were starting to connect.

The trust.

The missing money.

The journals.

The box.

But there was still one thing I couldn’t understand.

Why?

Why would my own family do this?

Rachel tapped the photo.

“We need to find out what was inside.””

“How?””

She looked at me.

“Daniel.””

I almost laughed.

“You think he’ll just tell us?””

“No.””

Rachel closed the file.

“But people reveal things when they think they’re winning.””

That afternoon, I went to Melissa’s house.

She opened the door slowly.

The confident woman from family gatherings was gone.

She looked tired.

“Connor.””

“Where is Daniel?””

Her eyes moved behind me.

“Why?””

“Because I know he took Dad’s box.””

She froze.

That reaction told me everything.

“You knew.””

Melissa looked down.

“I didn’t know what was inside.””

“But you knew he had it.””

She didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“How long?””

“Connor…”

“How long have you known?””

She sighed.

“Since before Dad died.””

Those words hit me harder than I expected.

“Explain.””

Melissa sat down.

I stayed standing.

“My father found out about the money,” she said quietly.

“I know.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“No, you don’t.””

She looked at me.

“He found out Daniel was taking money from one of the family businesses.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

Melissa wiped her face.

“Daniel convinced Mom that he could invest the money and make more for everyone.””

“And Dad found out?””

She nodded.

“He threatened to report him.””

My jaw tightened.

“So Dad wasn’t just investigating the trust.””

“No.””

Melissa’s voice dropped.

“He was investigating Daniel.””

Everything suddenly shifted.

My father hadn’t only been protecting my daughters.

He had been protecting the entire family from someone.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Melissa looked ashamed.

“Because I was scared.””

“Of Daniel?””

She nodded.

“After Dad died, Daniel told me if I said anything, he would tell everyone I helped him.””

I stared at her.

“Did you?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know how bad it was at first.””

That answer hurt.

But it was honest.

For the first time in years, my sister wasn’t acting like she had everything under control.

She looked broken.

“Where is he now?””

Melissa looked toward the window.

“He’s been acting strange since you filed the court case.””

“Why?””

“Because he knows you’re getting close.””

That night, Rachel and I reviewed everything again.

Then she found something.

A transfer record.

Daniel had moved money from an account connected to my father’s company.

The amount wasn’t small.

$42,000.

The exact amount mentioned by the judge.

Rachel looked at me.

“This may be why your mother was trying to hide everything.””

“So she was covering for him.””

“Yes.””

I thought about my mother’s words.

I protected this family.

But she hadn’t protected everyone.

She protected the person causing the damage.

The next morning, Daniel called me.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“Connor.””

His voice sounded calm.

Too calm.

“Where’s my father’s box?””

Silence.

Then a small laugh.

“You really believe all this?””

“I saw the security footage.””

His laugh disappeared.

“You don’t understand what you’re getting into.””

I gripped the phone.

“Then explain it.””

Another pause.

Then Daniel said:

“Your father wasn’t the hero you think he was.””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

“You’ll find out soon enough.””

“Daniel—”

But he hung up.

A minute later, Rachel called.

“Connor.””

Her voice sounded urgent.

“What happened?””

“Someone broke into the storage facility.””

I stood up.

“What?””

“The records were damaged.””

“Was the box there?””

Rachel was quiet.

Then she answered.

“No.””

My heart sank.

“Daniel took it?””

“No.””

A pause.

“Because the box disappeared three days before he arrived.””

I felt confused.

“Then who took it?””

Rachel sent me an image.

A new security photo.

Someone else had entered the storage unit.

May you like

Someone carrying my father’s box.

And this time, I recognized the person immediately.
