Chapter 6: The Husband Who Chose Silence
I stared at the signature until the letters blurred.
Eric Carter.
My husband.
The man who held my hand when we promised forever.
The man who whispered that we would protect our child together.
The same man who had signed a document allowing his mother to make decisions about our daughter.
Without telling me.
“I don’t understand,” I whispered.
Dana folded her hands.
“The paperwork was submitted before the delivery.””
“Before?””
“Yes.””
I looked at my sleeping daughter.
Before I had even met her.
Before I had held her.
Before I knew the sound of her first cry.
They had already been deciding things about her.
Without me.
“Why would he do this?””
Dana didn’t answer.
She couldn’t.
Because only Eric knew.
A knock came at the door.
My entire body reacted.
I thought it was Linda.
But it was Eric.
He stood there with tired eyes.
“Can I come in?””
I looked at Dana.
She quietly stood.
“I’ll give you a moment.””
When the door closed, Eric stepped inside.
He looked at the baby.
Then at me.
“I know you’re angry.””
I almost smiled.
Angry.
Such a small word.
“You signed papers about our daughter.””
His face changed.
“I was trying to protect her.””
“From who?””
He didn’t answer.
“From me?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
Eric sat down.
“My mom said you were going to leave.””
I stared at him.
“And?””
“And I panicked.””
I felt something break inside.
“You panicked, so you gave her control?””
“I thought we could work things out.””
“Work things out?””
My voice rose.
“I was on the bathroom floor after giving birth.””
Eric looked down.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
The same words.
The same truth.
“You keep saying you know, but you don’t.””
His eyes became red.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
For years, I had wanted those words.
But now they sounded empty.
Because apologies meant nothing when they came after someone was exposed.
“What happened when your mother locked the door?””
Eric froze.
“I told you. I didn’t know.””
“You heard me screaming?””
His silence answered.
“You heard me calling for help?””
“Your phone…”
He stopped.
I leaned forward.
“My phone recorded everything.””
His face changed.
Fear.
Not sadness.
Fear.
“What?””
“The responders heard her.””
Eric looked toward the floor.
And suddenly I understood.
He wasn’t afraid because I was hurt.
He was afraid because the truth existed outside that house.
“You knew what she was like,” I whispered.
He swallowed.
“She’s my mother.””
“And I was your wife.””
The room became silent.
Then my daughter moved slightly.
Both of us looked at her.
For a second, I remembered the man I fell in love with.
The man who used to make me laugh.
The man who promised me I would never face anything alone.
Then I remembered the bathroom floor.
And I knew promises meant nothing without action.
Eric stood.
“I want to fix this.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
He stopped.
“I can change.””
I shook my head.
“You had your chance.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Are you leaving me?””
I looked down at my daughter.
Then back at him.
“I left the moment you chose silence.””
Eric walked out slowly.
But before the door closed, he turned around.
“There’s something else you need to know.””
I looked up.
“What?””
His face was pale.
“My mother didn’t just call the hospital.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did she do?””
Eric hesitated.
Then he said the words that made my blood freeze.
May you like
“She already told everyone you were an unfit mother.””
And somewhere outside that hospital room, I knew Linda was preparing her next move.
