Chapter 13: The Final Lie

For two days, I wondered what Linda meant.

One thing.

One secret.

One piece of evidence she believed could destroy me.

I tried not to think about it.

But fear has a way of finding every quiet moment.

It appeared when I fed my daughter.

When I rocked her to sleep.

When the apartment became silent at night.

I kept wondering what Linda had.

What story she had created this time.

Melissa called me early Monday morning.

“Mrs. Carter, we need to talk.””

I knew from her voice that it wasn’t good.

“What happened?””

“Linda submitted additional evidence.””

My stomach dropped.

“What kind?””

“A medical report.””

I went cold.

“About me?””

“Yes.””

I sat down.

“What does it say?””

Melissa paused.

“She claims you experienced a mental health crisis after delivery.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

That was the final lie.

Not that I hurt someone.

Not that I endangered my baby.

Something harder to prove.

Something people were afraid of.

“She’s saying I’m unstable.””

“Yes.””

I looked at my daughter sleeping beside me.

The same daughter I had protected through every second of pain.

The same daughter Linda wanted to take.

“How did she get medical information?””

“That’s what we’re investigating.””

Then Melissa added:

“But there’s something strange.””

“What?””

“The report is incomplete.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It’s missing pages.””

My heartbeat increased.

“Missing pages?””

“Yes. The pages that contain the doctor’s actual assessment.””

I stood.

“So she only submitted the part that helps her?””

“That appears to be the case.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

Almost.

Because by now, I knew exactly who Linda was.

She didn’t need the truth.

She needed a weapon.

That afternoon, we returned to court.

Linda looked confident again.

She had her lawyer beside her.

Her perfect expression.

Her calm voice.

The version of herself she showed everyone.

Her attorney presented the report.

“Your Honor, this document raises serious concerns regarding Mrs. Carter’s emotional condition.””

I watched the judge read it.

My hands shook.

Not because it was true.

Because I knew how easily a lie could become a fact if nobody challenged it.

Melissa stood.

“Your Honor, we request the complete medical file be reviewed.””

Linda’s attorney immediately objected.

“This is an attempt to distract from the evidence.””

Melissa looked directly at the judge.

“No. This is an attempt to see all of it.””

The judge ordered the complete file.

A clerk left the courtroom.

The wait felt endless.

Linda leaned back.

She looked at me.

Almost smiling.

Like she believed she had already won.

Then the clerk returned.

The file was placed before the judge.

He read quietly.

Then his expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

The judge looked at Linda’s attorney.

“Why was only part of this report submitted?””

Silence.

The attorney looked confused.

“I’m not sure.””

The judge turned the page.

“Because the missing section directly contradicts the claim being made.””

My chest loosened.

The doctor’s full evaluation explained everything.

My emotional state was normal after a traumatic birth.

My reactions were consistent with someone experiencing fear and stress.

Not instability.

Not danger.

Fear.

The very thing Linda caused.

The judge looked at the evidence.

Then at Linda.

“Mrs. Carter, did you review this complete report before submitting the partial version?””

Linda’s face changed.

“I…”

For once, she had no prepared answer.

I watched her struggle.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I wanted accountability.

Then Melissa stood again.

“Your Honor, we also have testimony from another witness.””

A woman entered the courtroom.

I recognized her immediately.

Sharon.

The former coworker.

She took the stand.

“I was asked by Mrs. Carter’s mother-in-law to provide a statement.””

Linda’s expression changed.

Sharon continued.

“She wanted me to say Mrs. Carter was unstable before the baby was born.””

The judge looked at Linda.

“Did you believe that was true?””

“No.””

“Did you write the statement?””

“No.””

“Why?””

Sharon looked toward me.

“Because it wasn’t true.””

The room became silent.

Another lie collapsed.

Then Sharon said something unexpected.

“She told me something else.””

Melissa turned.

“What?””

Sharon swallowed.

“She said once the baby was born, Mrs. Carter would have no power left.””

My fingers tightened.

The judge looked at Linda.

“What did she mean by that?””

Linda looked away.

And I knew.

She had finally run out of places to hide.

But there was still one person who needed to answer.

Eric.

Because while Linda built the plan…

He had helped her build it.
