Chapter 12: The Truth She Wrote Herself

I couldn’t turn the page.

Not immediately.

Because somehow seeing Linda’s thoughts written in her own handwriting felt more disturbing than hearing her lies.

When people speak, they can pretend.

They can panic.

They can claim they were misunderstood.

But writing requires intention.

Time.

Choice.

Eric stood beside me.

“She wrote this?””

I nodded.

His face changed.

“She planned everything.””

Melissa arrived an hour later.

She carefully reviewed the journal.

Page after page.

The pattern became impossible to ignore.

Linda wrote about me like I was an enemy.

Not a person.

She described every disagreement as proof I was “difficult.””

Every boundary as “disrespect.””

Every decision as an attack.

“She convinced herself,” Melissa said.

I looked at her.

“What?””

“That you were the problem.””

I looked back at the journal.

Maybe that was the most frightening part.

Linda didn’t think she was cruel.

She thought she was right.

The next entry stopped me.

*“Eric is too weak to choose correctly. I will have to guide him.””*

I looked at Eric.

He read the sentence.

His face turned pale.

Because those words explained his entire life.

Not just what happened to me.

Everything.

The control.

The fear.

The inability to stand up to her.

Melissa continued reading.

Then she stopped.

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

She turned the page.

“This mentions the hospital.””

I leaned closer.

The entry was dated three days before the birth.

*“If the doctors question her, the process will begin immediately.””*

My stomach dropped.

“What process?””

Melissa kept reading.

Then she looked at me.

“The custody process.””

The room became silent.

Linda hadn’t reacted after the birth.

She had prepared before it.

She had expected this.

The slap.

The bathroom.

The accusations.

Everything was part of a plan.

I sat down slowly.

The betrayal felt heavier than the fear.

Because I had spent months inviting this woman into my life.

Into my home.

Into my child’s future.

That night, Eric stayed outside my apartment.

Not inside.

Outside.

For the first time, he understood that trust wasn’t something he could demand.

It was something he had destroyed.

The next morning, Melissa filed additional evidence.

The journal changed everything.

But before the hearing could happen, something unexpected occurred.

Linda requested a private meeting.

I refused.

Immediately.

But Melissa asked me to reconsider.

“Why?””

“Because sometimes people reveal more when they think they still have control.””

I didn’t like the idea.

But I agreed.

The meeting took place in a lawyer’s office.

Linda walked in wearing a tired expression.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Tired.

She sat across from me.

“I know you hate me.””

I said nothing.

She looked down.

“I made mistakes.””

I almost laughed.

Mistakes.

A word people used when they didn’t want to name what they did.

“You locked me in a bathroom after I gave birth.””

Her eyes watered.

“I was scared.””

“You were in control.””

She looked up.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“I understand perfectly.””

She looked at me for a long time.

Then she said something I never expected.

“Eric was always afraid of disappointing me.””

I didn’t respond.

Because she was finally admitting the truth.

Not about me.

About him.

“I thought I was protecting him.””

“You were controlling him.””

Her face tightened.

Then the old Linda returned.

“You turned him against me.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I stood.

“He finally saw you clearly.””

As I walked toward the door, Linda called after me.

“You think you won?””

I stopped.

She smiled faintly.

And that scared me.

Because there was no sadness in her eyes.

Only calculation.

“I still have one thing.””

I turned.

“What?””

She leaned back.

“Something that will prove you’re not the mother everyone thinks you are.””

My heart tightened.

“What are you talking about?””

Linda smiled.

May you like

And for the first time since the bathroom door locked behind me, I felt afraid again.

Because I realized she wasn’t finished.
