Chapter 9: The Truth Ethan Hid

Nobody moved.

I stared at the man standing beside Diane.

The man who had been missing for seven years.

The man whose name had haunted my entire life.

Ethan Cole.

My father.

“You’re alive.””

The words barely left my mouth.

His eyes softened.

“I’m sorry.””

That was all he said.

Not an explanation.

Not a miracle.

Just an apology.

Diane stepped forward.

“Sarah, don't listen to him.””

I turned toward her.

The woman who had dragged my daughter toward a trash can.

The woman who had spent years making Lily feel unwanted.

“You don't get to tell me who to trust.””

Her face tightened.

“You have no idea what he did.””

Ethan laughed quietly.

“That’s exactly what you wanted her to believe.””

Jason moved between them.

“Mom.””

Diane looked at him.

“You brought her here?””

“No.””

“You knew Ethan was alive?””

Jason hesitated.

Diane’s expression changed.

“You knew.””

Jason said nothing.

She slapped him.

The sound echoed.

Lily jumped.

I pulled her behind me.

“Enough.””

Diane looked at me.

“You have no idea what kind of man he is.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“And you have no idea what kind of woman you became.””

For the first time, Diane looked afraid.

I noticed.

“Why are you afraid of him?””

Diane recovered quickly.

“I’m not.””

Ethan looked at Frank.

“Tell her.””

Frank shook his head.

“I already told her enough.””

“No.””

Ethan’s voice became serious.

“She deserves everything.””

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folder.

Not old.

Not damaged.

Fresh.

He handed it to me.

“What is this?””

“The reason Diane wanted that key.””

I opened it.

Inside were financial records.

Property transfers.

Names.

Dates.

Then I saw it.

Mercer Development.

A hidden account.

Payments made every month for seven years.

The recipient name made my hands shake.

Jason Miller.

I looked up.

Jason went pale.

“I can explain.””

“Explain what?””

“I never took money.””

“Then why is your name here?””

He looked at his mother.

Diane looked away.

Ethan spoke quietly.

“Because Diane used Jason’s identity to move money.””

Jason stared at his mother.

“What?””

“She needed someone clean.””

Diane’s expression changed.

“You don't know what you're talking about.””

Ethan smiled sadly.

“I spent seven years collecting proof.””

He pointed at the folder.

“She wasn't protecting Jason.””

My eyes moved between them.

“She was protecting herself.””

Diane stepped forward.

“Sarah, he is manipulating you.””

“Then why does your name appear on every document?””

She froze.

A terrible silence followed.

Ethan continued.

“Your mother was right. The night Lily was born, I went to the hospital because I found out Diane was planning something.””

My grip tightened on the papers.

“What?””

“She wanted to take control of the Cole restitution trust.””

“The one I inherited?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Charles Mercer never destroyed my family completely.””

He looked at me.

“He left one thing behind.””

“What?””

Ethan pointed at the documents.

“Proof.””

A siren sounded in the distance.

Police.

Diane looked toward the road.

Her confidence disappeared.

“This isn’t over.””

She turned toward Jason.

“You’re going to regret choosing them.””

Jason didn’t move.

For the first time, he looked at his mother without fear.

“No.””

Diane stared at him.

“I regret believing you.””

The police vehicles approached.

Officers stepped out.

Everything became noise.

Questions.

Movement.

Voices.

But I only focused on Lily.

She held my hand.

“Mommy?””

“Yes?””

“Is that my grandpa?””

I looked at Ethan.

He was standing several feet away.

Crying silently.

I didn’t know if I was ready to forgive him.

I didn’t know if I could forgive Jason.

I didn't know what my family would look like after today.

But I knew one thing.

My daughter belonged with people who protected her.

Not people who made her prove she deserved love.

As officers escorted Diane away, Ethan’s phone suddenly rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He showed me.

The number was blocked.

But the message was clear.

YOU FOUND THE PAPERS.

NOW FIND OUT WHO HELPED DIANE.

Ethan looked at Jason.

Then at Frank.

Then at me.

“There’s someone else.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

Ethan stared toward the desert.

“The person who helped Diane hide the truth for seven years.””

The phone buzzed again.

A second message appeared.

May you like

And this time, it included a name.

Melissa Miller. :::
