Chapter 12: The Ledger

Charles Mercer held the gun with a steady hand.

That frightened me most.

He was old.

But he wasn't confused.

He wasn't shaking.

His eyes were cold and completely focused.

Ethan stepped in front of me.

“Let Melissa go.””

Charles smiled.

“You always did like playing the hero.””

“She's your daughter.””

“She made her choice.””

Melissa strained against the rope.

“You kidnapped Lily.””

Charles looked at her.

“I borrowed the child.””

My stomach turned.

“You went near my daughter?””

He looked at me.

“She was never in danger.””

“You took her from my mother's house.””

“To bring you where you needed to be.””

I stepped around Ethan.

“You used a seven-year-old child as bait.””

“Yes.””

No hesitation.

No shame.

Ethan reached for my arm.

“Sarah.””

I shook him off.

“Why?””

Charles looked almost amused.

“Because adults lie. Children make people move.””

Melissa whispered, “He needed you to open the trust.””

“What?””

Charles nodded toward a metal safe in the corner.

“The Cole trust has a biometric provision.””

Ethan stared at him.

“You changed it.””

“No. Your lawyer did.””

Charles smiled.

“After your supposed death, access to certain protected assets transferred to Sarah.””

I looked at the safe.

“You need me to open it.””

“I need your fingerprint.””

“And if I refuse?””

His eyes moved toward Melissa.

She went pale.

“You won't.””

Ethan stepped closer.

Charles raised the gun.

“Another step and she dies.””

Ethan stopped.

I looked around.

No Detective Alvarez.

No officers.

Where were they?

Charles seemed to read my mind.

“The entrance above isn't the only entrance.””

A noise came from behind the shelves.

A hidden door.

He had brought us into a room with an escape route.

“Open the safe,” Charles ordered.

I walked toward it.

“Sarah, don't,” Ethan said.

Charles pressed the gun against Melissa’s shoulder.

“Open it.””

I placed my thumb against the scanner.

A green light appeared.

Click.

The safe opened.

Charles inhaled.

Inside sat one black ledger.

Nothing else.

Thirty years of lies reduced to a book small enough to hold in one hand.

Charles smiled.

“Give it to me.””

I removed it.

“What's inside?””

“Nothing that concerns you.””

“It concerns me if you kidnapped my daughter for it.””

His expression hardened.

“Give me the book.””

I opened it instead.

Names.

Payments.

Dates.

Government inspectors.

Attorneys.

Bank accounts.

Then I saw Diane Mercer.

Several entries beside her name.

Payments authorized.

Documents transferred.

Witness contacted.

But beneath Diane’s name appeared another.

Frank Miller.

I stared.

Ethan saw it too.

“No.””

Charles laughed.

“Your perfect Frank.””

I looked at Ethan.

“What does this mean?””

Charles answered.

“Frank wasn't some frightened husband trapped by Diane.””

Melissa started crying.

“Don't.””

Charles smiled at her.

“He was my accountant.””

My stomach dropped.

“Frank helped you?””

“For years.””

“He told us Diane did everything.””

“Of course he did.””

Charles sounded almost proud.

“Frank always knew when to let a woman take the blame.””

I thought of him at the barbecue.

Silent.

Watching.

Never intervening.

Not when Diane humiliated Lily.

Not when everything exploded.

“Why did he help you?””

“Money.””

Melissa shook her head violently.

“No.””

Charles ignored her.

“Frank knew Ethan was innocent. He created the accounts used to frame him.””

Ethan’s face changed.

Thirty years of pain settled into his eyes.

“You.””

Charles grinned.

“You finally understand.””

A crash sounded upstairs.

Charles looked toward the ceiling.

That single distraction was enough.

Melissa kicked the chair sideways.

It slammed into Charles’s knees.

The gun fired.

The sound deafened me.

Ethan tackled him.

I dropped behind the safe.

The gun skidded across the floor.

Charles punched Ethan.

Ethan drove him into the wall.

“Police!”” someone shouted upstairs.

Charles reached for the hidden door.

I grabbed the ledger.

He saw me.

“Put that down!””

He shoved Ethan away and lunged.

I backed up.

Melissa screamed.

Then Detective Alvarez appeared on the stairs.

“Don't move!””

Charles froze.

Two officers rushed behind him.

“Hands where I can see them!””

For one terrible second, Charles looked at me.

Then at the ledger.

He smiled.

“You still don't understand.””

Officers forced him against the wall.

“What don't I understand?”” I shouted.

Charles laughed as they handcuffed him.

“That book doesn't destroy Diane.””

He nodded toward the open page.

“It destroys your husband.””

My blood went cold.

I looked down.

There was another section beneath Frank’s entries.

Seven years earlier.

The week Lily was born.

A payment.

Recipient:

JASON MILLER.

Purpose:

COLE MATTER — FINAL RESOLUTION.

I couldn't breathe.

Ethan stepped beside me.

“No.””

The amount was $250,000.

Jason’s signature appeared underneath.

My phone rang.

Jason.

I answered without speaking.

His voice came through immediately.

“Sarah, something happened.””

I stared at his signature.

“What?””

“Dad disappeared.””

My eyes closed.

Jason continued.

“He left Lily with the officer and took my truck.””

“Where would he go?””

“I don't know.””

I opened my eyes.

On the final page of the ledger, someone had written an address beside Frank’s name.

I recognized it.

My house.

Then another line beneath it.

If Cole survives, use the daughter.

I stopped breathing.

Not Lily.

Me.

“Jason.””

“What?””

“Get away from our house.””

Silence.

Then his voice changed.

“Sarah…”

“What?””

“I’m already here.””

A door slammed through the phone.

May you like

Jason whispered, “Dad?””

Then the line went dead.
