Chapter 7: The Ranch in the Desert
The message stayed on my phone like a warning carved into stone.
COME ALONE, SARAH.
AND DON'T TRUST YOUR HUSBAND.
I read it again.
Then again.
My eyes moved to Jason.
For seven years, I had trusted this man with every part of my life.
My secrets.
My fears.
My daughter.
And now someone who knew everything about our family was telling me he was the person I should fear.
“Sarah.””
Jason’s voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
“Don’t listen to whoever sent that.””
“Why?””
His face tightened.
“Because they want you to doubt me.””
“They know things only my family knows.””
“So do a lot of people now.””
I held up the phone.
“They know about Lily.””
Jason looked away.
That tiny movement hurt more than if he had shouted.
“Jason.””
“I don’t know everything.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Sarah, please. I know I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
My voice rose.
“You hid a DNA test. You let your mother make comments about my daughter. You lied about being there when she was born.””
“I know.””
“And now my child is missing.””
His eyes filled.
“I know.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then my phone rang.
The police.
I answered.
“Sarah Bennett?””
“Yes.””
“This is Detective Alvarez. Your mother called us about your daughter.””
“Can you find her?””
“We’re working on it.””
“Working?””
My voice shook.
“My seven-year-old daughter has been taken.””
“We have officers heading to the location your mother provided.””
The detective paused.
“Do you know anyone who would want to harm Lily?””
I looked at Jason.
“I don’t know anymore.””
That was the truth.
After the call ended, Jason grabbed his keys.
“I’m coming with you.””
“No.””
His expression changed.
“Sarah.””
“You heard the message.””
“You don't actually believe I took Lily.””
“I don't know what to believe.””
That sentence broke something in his face.
But I couldn’t stop.
Not this time.
I drove toward the ranch alone.
The desert stretched endlessly around me.
Orange hills.
Dry brush.
An empty road that seemed to lead nowhere.
Every few seconds, I looked at the photograph.
Lily’s scared face.
Her little hands folded in her lap.
I promised myself something.
Whoever had taken her would answer to me.
The old Mercer ranch appeared behind a rusted gate.
The building looked abandoned.
The wooden fence was broken.
The windows were dark.
I parked.
My phone buzzed.
A new message.
I opened it.
You came alone.
I looked around.
“Show yourself!””
Nothing.
Then the ranch door slowly opened.
“Mommy?””
My heart stopped.
“Lily!””
She stepped into the doorway.
Her face was dirty.
Her eyes were red.
But she was alive.
I ran.
I didn't care about the danger.
I didn't care about anything.
I dropped to my knees and pulled her into my arms.
“Oh my God.””
I kissed her hair.
“I’m here.””
She buried her face into my shoulder.
“I knew you would come.””
I held her tighter.
“Who brought you here?””
She pulled back.
Her little face was full of fear.
“Grandpa.””
I froze.
“Grandpa Frank?””
She nodded.
My blood turned cold.
“Where is he?””
“He was here.””
“Was?””
“He left when he heard your car.””
I looked toward the dark ranch.
“Did he hurt you?””
“No.””
“Did he touch you?””
She shook her head.
“He just kept asking about the key.””
“What key?””
“The one Grandma wanted.””
I looked around.
“Lily, where is the key?””
She reached into her pocket.
The brass key.
Still there.
My daughter had hidden evidence from the people who wanted it.
“Why didn’t you give it to him?””
She lowered her eyes.
“Because you told me secrets should only be given to people who love us.””
My throat tightened.
A seven-year-old had understood something adults refused to.
I hugged her again.
Then I heard footsteps behind me.
I spun around.
Frank stood at the edge of the doorway.
Older than the last time I saw him.
Tired.
Broken.
But not angry.
“Sarah.””
I stepped in front of Lily.
“Stay away from us.””
Frank raised his hands.
“I didn't take her.””
“Then why was she here?””
“Because I was trying to protect her.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Your wife attacked her.””
“I know.””
“You watched.””
His face fell.
“I was afraid.””
“Afraid of Diane?””
“Yes.””
That answer surprised me.
Frank looked toward the desert.
“Diane has spent thirty years covering up what happened.””
“What happened?””
He looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“Your father was telling the truth.””
A vehicle engine roared in the distance.
Frank’s expression changed instantly.
“He found you.””
“Who?””
Frank looked terrified.
“Jason.””
My stomach dropped.
A truck appeared on the dirt road.
Jason’s truck.
He stepped out.
“Sarah!””
I turned.
Frank whispered behind me.
“Ask him why he never told you about the second DNA test.””
I froze.
“What second test?””
Jason stopped walking.
His face went pale.
And I knew.
May you like
Before he even spoke.
There was another secret.
