Chapter 2: The Photographs Nobody Was Supposed to See
I made it halfway up the staircase before the tears came.
The ballroom music faded behind me, replaced by the soft thud of my heels against the carpet. I clutched the torn train against my legs, trying to keep the shredded lace from dragging across the floor.
When I reached the bridal suite, I locked the door.
Then I sank onto the sofa and cried into the fabric of my dress.
A few minutes earlier, two hundred people had watched my mother-in-law humiliate me. Some had rushed forward to help. Others had stared at their plates. A few had whispered behind their hands.
And Nathan had told me to calm down.
My phone vibrated.
A message from my younger sister, Lauren, appeared on the screen.
*Lauren: Mom says you're upset. Don't let a little dress drama ruin your wedding. Isabella probably didn't mean it.*
I read the message twice.
Lauren hadn't even been standing near us when the dress ripped. She had been across the room, taking selfies with her college friends.
How could she know what happened well enough to defend Isabella?
I started typing a reply, then stopped.
The door rattled.
"Emily?"" Nathan called.
"Please open the door.""
I wiped my face with a tissue and unlocked it.
He stepped inside, still wearing his black tuxedo. His bow tie hung loose around his collar.
"Are you okay?"" he asked.
I looked at him.
"Do I look okay?""
He glanced at the gown.
"I know you're upset.""
"Then why did you tell me to calm down instead of asking your mother why her heel was on my dress?""
Nathan exhaled sharply.
"Because everyone was staring, Emily. I didn't want a scene.""
"A scene?"" My voice cracked.
"Your mother destroyed something my dying mother helped me choose, and you were worried about a scene?""
"Don't say it like that.""
"Like what? Like the truth?""
He paced toward the window, then turned back.
"Mom said she tripped. She was embarrassed.""
"She leaned into my ear and told me she had warned me about the train.""
Nathan went still.
"She said that?""
"Yes.""
For a moment, he looked uncertain.
Then his phone buzzed.
He glanced at the screen.
"It's Aunt Linda," he said.
"She's asking why you're accusing Mom.""
I stared at him in disbelief.
"Your mother has already called her?""
"Emily, please. Can we just get through tonight?""
I turned away from him.
That was when someone knocked softly on the door.
"Emily? It's Sarah.""
I opened it.
Our photographer stood in the hallway with her camera hanging from her shoulder. Her expression was serious.
"Can I come in for a moment?""
Nathan stepped aside.
Sarah entered, closed the door, and looked directly at me.
"I think you need to see something.""
She placed her camera on the table and opened the image gallery.
The first photograph showed me walking toward the family table, my train spread elegantly behind me.
In the background, Isabella stood near a floral arrangement.
She wasn't looking at me.
She was staring directly at the lace.
Sarah tapped the screen.
The second photograph showed Isabella shifting her weight. Her champagne flute was raised, and her right foot hovered just above the edge of my train.
I stopped breathing.
Sarah swiped again.
The third photograph showed Isabella's heel pressing down on the lace as she leaned backward, pulling the fabric taut.
In the fourth, the lace had begun to split.
In the fifth, Isabella was looking directly at the damage.
And in the sixth, she was smiling.
Not startled.
Not embarrassed.
Smiling.
Nathan took the camera from Sarah.
"Let me see that again.""
He zoomed in on the photograph.
His jaw tightened.
Sarah folded her arms.
"I was shooting in burst mode because I wanted candid reception pictures. I didn't realize what I'd captured until I reviewed them upstairs.""
Nathan swiped through the sequence again.
"There's no way she can claim she didn't see the train.""
"She saw it before she stepped on it," Sarah replied.
"I have the entire sequence.""
I sank onto the sofa.
"Why would she do this to me?""
Neither of them answered.
Nathan sat beside me, staring at the photographs.
For the first time since the incident, he looked genuinely ashamed.
"Emily, I'm sorry.""
I swallowed.
"You didn't tear my dress, Nathan. But when I told you what happened, you acted as though my pain was an inconvenience.""
He lowered his eyes.
"You're right.""
Sarah cleared her throat.
"There's something else.""
She pulled out her phone and opened another photograph taken shortly before the damage.
It showed Isabella standing near the ballroom entrance, talking to Lauren.
My sister's face was partially turned toward the camera. Isabella was holding Lauren's wrist, and Lauren was looking down at something in her hand.
"What were they doing?"" I asked.
Sarah enlarged the image.
"I don't know. I was photographing guests as they arrived. I only noticed them because Isabella kept looking toward your train.""
I stared at Lauren's face.
A strange, unpleasant feeling settled in my stomach.
Nathan noticed.
"What's wrong?""
"Nothing," I said, though I knew that wasn't true.
Sarah returned to the first sequence of photographs.
"Whatever happened, these are clear. I won't delete them, and I can provide the original files.""
Nathan nodded slowly.
Then he looked at the ballroom doors visible in the photographs.
"Can you connect your camera feed to the reception screen?""
Sarah hesitated.
"I can display the photographs, yes. Why?""
Nathan stood up.
"Because my mother has spent years convincing everyone that she never does anything wrong. Tonight, she's going to have to explain herself.""
I grabbed his hand.
"Nathan, please think about this. Your whole family is downstairs.""
He looked at me, and for a second, I saw the man I had fallen in love with.
"I'm thinking about you," he said.
"I should have done that earlier.""
He picked up his phone and typed a message.
Then he paused, staring at something on the screen.
His face changed.
"What is it?"" I asked.
He didn't answer.
He scrolled upward, opened another conversation, and read a message twice.
"Sarah," he said quietly, "can you give us a minute?""
She nodded and stepped into the hallway.
I moved closer to him.
"Nathan, what's going on?""
He turned his phone toward me.
The message was from his mother to Aunt Linda, sent that morning.
Emily's mother won't be around much longer anyway. There's no reason she should get to control every special moment in this family.
My hand flew to my mouth.
"She wrote that about my mom?""
Nathan's eyes were wet.
"There's more.""
He opened another message.
This one had been sent to an unsaved number.
Everything is arranged. Once the dress is ruined, Emily will lose control, and everyone will finally see what she's really like.
I felt the room tilt.
"Who did she send that to?""
Nathan shook his head.
"I don't know. The number isn't saved.""
I stared at the message, trying to understand how long Isabella had been planning to humiliate me.
Then Nathan looked at the photograph of Lauren standing beside his mother.
"Emily, I think we need to ask your sister what she knows.""
Before I could respond, someone knocked on the door again.
This time, the voice on the other side belonged to Lauren.
"Emily? Open up. We need to talk.""
Nathan and I exchanged a look.
May you like
Then Lauren added something that made the blood drain from my face.
"Please don't let Nathan show those pictures to anyone. Mom promised me she wouldn't tell you.""
