Chapter 14: The Woman Everyone Blamed

The accusation against my mother spread through the family before we could stop it.

By the following morning, Aunt Linda had called Nathan six times. Two company board members had demanded an emergency meeting. Someone had even sent an anonymous message to my mother's hospital room, accusing her of helping Richard commit fraud.

Nathan wanted to issue a public statement immediately.

Michael advised against it.

"We have evidence implicating Isabella," he said.

"We also have a man who spent fourteen years hiding from investigators. Daniel may be telling the truth, or he may be trying to save himself.""

Nathan stood at the end of the conference table.

"My mother has spent years lying to me. I won't let her destroy Margaret to protect herself.""

"Then we need to prove what happened," Michael replied.

Detective Shaw arrived with an update.

Daniel Cross had surrendered at a police station outside Nashville. He had provided documents and agreed to give a formal statement, but he insisted on speaking to Nathan first.

Nathan looked at me.

"I'm going.""

I shook my head.

"We're going together.""

The detective agreed to supervise the meeting at the station.

Daniel sat in a small interview room wearing a dark coat. His hair was gray at the temples, and the scar near his left ear matched the photograph Sarah had taken at the wedding.

Nathan stopped in the doorway.

For several seconds, he simply stared.

"You let me bury you," he said.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"I know.""

"You let me believe my father died beside you.""

"I was told the body had been identified.""

"By whom?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Isabella.""

Nathan struck the table with his palm.

"You expect me to believe that?""

"No," Daniel replied.

"I expect you to verify everything I say.""

He explained that he had been involved in the financial scheme at Whitmore Hospitality. He had helped establish shell companies and falsify construction reports. Richard discovered the fraud and threatened to expose both him and Isabella.

"I thought Richard would negotiate," Daniel said.

"I believed we could return the money and avoid prison.""

Nathan stared at him with disgust.

"You stole millions of dollars and expected my father to help you escape the consequences.""

Daniel didn't deny it.

"When Richard refused, Isabella panicked. She believed he would destroy the company and send her to prison.""

"What happened at the lake?""

Daniel looked at Detective Shaw.

"I arrived after the argument began. Richard was in the water. Isabella was standing on the dock, and Margaret was near the car.""

I leaned forward.

"Did Isabella push him?""

Daniel hesitated.

"I didn't see the initial fall. But when I reached the dock, Richard was still alive. He was trying to climb out.""

Nathan's voice dropped.

"Did you help him?""

"I pulled him toward the shore.""

"What happened next?""

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

"Isabella told me to take Richard to the hospital. I agreed. But before we could leave, another vehicle arrived.""

"Whose vehicle?""

"Thomas Carter's.""

I stared at him.

"My father was there?""

Daniel nodded.

"He was supposed to be dead by then. The construction accident had been arranged to make him disappear, but Thomas survived. Isabella wanted him kept under control because he knew about the falsified reports.""

My stomach turned.

"So my father helped you hide Richard?""

"No," Daniel said quickly.

"Thomas tried to help Richard. They argued with Isabella. Then someone struck Thomas from behind.""

Nathan went pale.

"Who?""

Daniel looked at me.

"I don't know. I never saw the person's face.""

"Then how did my father survive?""

"Thomas was placed in a vehicle and taken to a private clinic. Richard was moved separately. I was told they would both be kept alive until the evidence was recovered.""

I stared at him.

"Where was Richard taken?""

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

"I don't know. I swear to you, I don't know.""

Nathan stood.

"You've lied for fourteen years. Why should we believe anything you say now?""

Daniel reached into his pocket and handed Detective Shaw a folded document.

"Because this is the original transfer order. It contains the name of the clinic where Thomas was treated and the payment authorization signed by Isabella.""

The detective examined the paper.

Her expression changed.

"This is significant.""

Daniel looked at Nathan.

"I made terrible choices. I helped steal money, and I helped cover up what happened at the lake. But I did not kill your father.""

"Then who did?""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Isabella knows.""

He explained that after Richard disappeared, Isabella told everyone he had drowned. Daniel was instructed to identify a body found downstream, but he claimed the face was too damaged to be certain.

The official identification was later attributed to dental records.

Detective Shaw made a note.

"We'll need those records and the original autopsy report.""

Daniel nodded.

"I can help you find them.""

Then he looked at me.

"There's something else about your mother. Isabella didn't threaten her only because she knew about the fraud. Margaret had evidence that could have sent Isabella to prison years before Richard died.""

I felt a chill.

"What evidence?""

Daniel reached into his folder and removed a photocopy of a bank transfer.

The payment had been made fourteen years earlier, three days before my father's reported death.

The amount was $250,000.

The recipient was a private account belonging to Thomas Carter.

But the authorization signature was Margaret's.

I stared at the page.

"That's impossible. My mother never had access to that kind of money.""

Daniel nodded.

"That's what I thought. Then I discovered the account had been opened in her name without her knowledge.""

Nathan looked at him.

"Who opened it?""

Daniel pointed to the signature at the bottom.

*Isabella Whitmore.*

Detective Shaw took the document.

"This will be examined. We won't assume Margaret was involved simply because someone used her name.""

I clung to that sentence.

For the first time, I understood how easily a lie could become a weapon. A forged signature, a missing document, a carefully placed photograph—and suddenly, an innocent person could look guilty.

Daniel leaned forward.

"Isabella is going to deny everything. She'll say I fabricated the records to escape prosecution.""

Nathan's jaw tightened.

"Then we'll let the evidence speak.""

As we prepared to leave, Daniel called after us.

"There's one more thing.""

Nathan turned.

"Make it good.""

Daniel's face crumpled.

"Isabella didn't just want to destroy your marriage. She wanted to find the ledger because it proves the company money was used to pay for the construction accident that supposedly killed Thomas.""

I felt my knees weaken.

"Why would she want the dress destroyed instead of simply taking it?""

"Because she thought you had already found the ledger and hidden it in the gown. She believed humiliating you would force you to reveal where it was.""

Nathan looked at me.

"She underestimated you.""

Daniel shook his head.

"No. She underestimated your mother.""

He slid one final photograph across the table.

It showed Margaret standing beside Richard at the lake, holding a small child in her arms.

I stared at the child.

It was Nathan.

But the date printed on the back was three years before Richard and Isabella married.

Nathan's face drained of color.

Daniel whispered, "There's a reason Isabella was so afraid of Margaret.""

May you like

He pointed to a handwritten note on the photograph.

*Richard's first family.*
