Chapter 4: The Recording She Never Knew Existed

The moment Patricia’s voice came through the phone speaker, the room felt smaller.

I could hear her laughing.

Not the fake little laugh she used when Daniel was around.

Not the sweet, polite voice she showed everyone outside our home.

This was different.

Cold.

Cruel.

“She thinks she belongs here,” Patricia said in the recording.

My chest tightened.

Daniel stood beside me, staring at the screen.

The video continued.

The angle was different from the kitchen camera.

It was from a small security device facing the hallway.

Patricia was sitting alone, talking to someone on the phone.

“I told you,” she said.

“She’s exactly the kind of woman who needs to be taught a lesson.””

I covered my mouth.

My own mother-in-law was talking about me like I was an enemy.

Daniel looked sick.

The recording continued.

“She’s been making Daniel forget his family,” Patricia said.

“But I know how to fix that.””

A voice on the other end asked something.

Patricia smiled.

“Make him choose.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

“Who was she talking to?”” I whispered.

“I don’t know,” he said.

But his voice sounded uncertain.

The video ended.

Silence filled the room.

I expected Daniel to apologize.

I expected him to look at me and finally understand what I had been saying for months.

Instead, he sat down.

Like he was exhausted.

“I didn’t know about this.””

I stared at him.

“But you knew something was wrong.””

He didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

I walked toward the kitchen.

Patricia was gone.

Her bedroom door was closed.

“She heard us,” I said.

Daniel stood.

“Emma.””

“No.””

I turned around.

“I need you to listen to me.””

He stopped.

“I spent six months telling you something was wrong. Six months. Every time she insulted me, you said I misunderstood. Every time she embarrassed me, you said I needed to be more patient.””

My voice cracked.

“And yesterday, when she hurt me, you believed her before you even looked at me.””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I was wrong.””

Those three words should have comforted me.

They didn’t.

Because some damage happens before someone admits they caused it.

I sat down at the table.

“Why did you turn off the camera?””

Daniel was quiet.

Finally, he spoke.

“Because my mother asked me to.””

My heart sank.

“You actually did it?””

“She said she felt uncomfortable being recorded.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So you protected her privacy while she was hurting me?””

“No. I didn’t know she was going to do that.””

“But you knew she wanted the camera off.””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

More than another lie would have.

Before I could answer, Patricia walked downstairs.

She looked calm again.

Almost too calm.

“You watched the video.””

Daniel faced her.

“Yes.””

She sighed.

“I knew this would happen.””

I stared at her.

“What happens now, Patricia?””

She looked directly at me.

“You destroy my relationship with my son.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“You attacked me.””

“I defended myself.””

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“You planned this.””

Patricia’s expression hardened.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Mom, why did you say those things?””

For a second, Patricia looked hurt.

Then she changed tactics.

“Because I was angry.””

She reached for his arm.

“I felt like I was losing my son.””

Daniel pulled his arm away.

That small movement shocked all of us.

Patricia stared at him.

“You’re choosing her?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. I’m choosing the truth.””

Her face changed.

The mask slipped.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

And so did Daniel.

Then Patricia smiled.

A quiet, dangerous smile.

“Okay.””

She nodded slowly.

“If that’s what you want.””

She turned and walked upstairs.

I watched her disappear.

And I knew the worst part.

She wasn’t defeated.

She was preparing.

That night, I woke up at 2:17 a.m. to the sound of my phone vibrating.

A message.

From the same unknown number.

This time, it included a photo.

I opened it.

And my blood ran cold.

It was a picture of Patricia standing outside a lawyer’s office.

The message underneath said:

“Your mother-in-law has been planning her next move for weeks.””
