Chapter 11: The Secret Daniel Buried
After Patricia left, the house felt different.
Not peaceful.
Not safe.
Just quiet.
The kind of quiet before something breaks.
Daniel stood by the window for a long time.
I watched him.
Waiting.
Finally, I said:
“What secret?””
He didn’t turn around.
“Emma…”
“No.””
My voice was tired.
“I have spent days discovering everyone around me has been hiding something.””
He closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“Then tell me.””
Daniel sat down.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he spoke.
“Before I met you, my mother and I had a different relationship.””
I waited.
“She controlled everything.””
I looked at him.
“She made decisions for me.””
He nodded.
“She picked my friends. She told me what jobs were right for me. She even tried to choose who I should date.””
My expression softened.
“Daniel.””
“I thought it was normal.””
He looked ashamed.
“When you grow up with something, you don’t always realize it’s wrong.””
I understood.
But there was more.
I could feel it.
“What are you not telling me?””
He looked down.
“When we got married, my mother asked me to sign something.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“A financial agreement.””
“About what?””
“The house.””
I stared at him.
“Daniel.””
“I never used it.””
“That’s not the point.””
“I know.””
His voice cracked.
“She told me it was just protection. She said if something happened, I needed security.””
I stood.
“And you hid it from me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I was embarrassed.””
I laughed softly.
“Embarrassed?””
He looked at me.
“I knew you would see how much influence she had over me.””
The honesty hurt.
But it was better than another lie.
“Where is it?””
He hesitated.
“My mother has the original.””
Of course she did.
Everything came back to her.
The control.
The planning.
The fear of losing power.
Suddenly, my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Patricia.
I opened it.
There was a photo.
A document.
And a sentence.
“Ask your husband what he promised me.””
I showed Daniel.
His face went pale.
“She has it.””
“What?””
“The agreement.””
Before I could answer, another message appeared.
This time with a location.
A restaurant downtown.
“She wants to meet.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Don’t go.””
I stared at him.
“She wants us afraid.””
“That’s what she wants.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“She wants control.””
Victor stepped closer.
“She may be setting a trap.””
I looked at him.
“Then we need to know what’s inside that trap.””
Daniel grabbed my hand.
“Emma, I already lost your trust once.””
I looked at him.
“Then don’t ask me to ignore the truth.””
He nodded slowly.
An hour later, we arrived at the restaurant.
Patricia was sitting alone.
She looked calm.
Almost victorious.
“Sit.””
Nobody moved.
Daniel spoke.
“Give me the agreement.””
Patricia smiled.
“Straight to business.””
“You lied to me.””
Her expression softened.
“No, Daniel.””
She looked at me.
“She lied to you.””
I felt my anger rise.
“Enough.””
Patricia ignored me.
She pushed a folder across the table.
“Read it.””
Daniel opened it.
His face changed.
“What is this?””
Patricia smiled.
“The reason your marriage was never as perfect as you believed.””
I leaned closer.
The first page was not about the house.
It was about me.
My name.
My signature.
A signature I never wrote.
Daniel looked at me.
And for a second…
I saw the same doubt from the kitchen.
Then he whispered:
“Emma…”
I looked at the page.
And realized something terrifying.
May you like
Patricia wasn’t just creating fake evidence.
Someone had been helping her for much longer than we knew.
