Chapter 2: The Camera That Disappeared

That night, I sat alone in our bedroom while Daniel slept on the couch.

He had not asked if my legs hurt.

He had not asked why I was crying.

He had only said one thing before walking away.

“I need time to process what happened.””

What happened.

Those words stayed in my head.

Because something had happened.

His mother attacked me.

And somehow, I was the person who needed to explain myself.

The next morning, I walked into the kitchen slowly.

Every step hurt.

Patricia was already there.

Making coffee.

She looked completely calm.

Like yesterday had never happened.

“Good morning,” she said.

I stared at her.

“How can you do this?””

She stirred her coffee.

“Do what?””

“Pretend nothing happened.””

She smiled.

“You should be careful with accusations.””

My hands tightened.

“You know exactly what you did.””

She leaned against the counter.

“No one saw anything.””

I looked toward the small black camera above the kitchen doorway.

“Yes, they did.””

Her smile faded.

“The camera?””

I nodded.

“The one Daniel installed last month.””

For the first time, Patricia looked nervous.

Only for a moment.

Then she laughed.

“Oh honey. That camera hasn’t worked in weeks.””

I froze.

“How would you know that?””

She looked away.

“I heard Daniel mention it.””

Something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

Because I had checked that camera yesterday morning.

The live feed had been working.

I had watched our dog sleeping in the living room.

I had seen the clock on the corner of the screen.

Everything was normal.

So why was Patricia so sure?

I went upstairs and opened my laptop.

I logged into the security system.

The camera was listed as offline.

My heart sank.

Someone had disabled it.

I heard footsteps behind me.

Daniel stood at the door.

“What are you doing?””

I turned around.

“Trying to prove the truth.””

His expression hardened.

“You’re still accusing my mother?””

“She hurt me.””

“Emma, my mother says you attacked her.””

I stared at him.

“You believe her?””

He was quiet.

That silence hurt more than anger.

“Daniel, please.””

He looked away.

“I don’t know what to believe.””

I walked closer.

“Then check.””

He looked at me.

“What?””

“The camera. Check the system logs. See when it stopped working.””

His face changed slightly.

A tiny reaction.

But I noticed.

“Why are you looking at me like that?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Because you’re making this worse.””

“Making this worse?””

“Yes.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe my own husband was saying those words.

“Daniel, your mother hurt me, and you’re worried about the argument?””

He didn’t answer.

Then Patricia called from downstairs.

“Daniel?””

His eyes immediately moved toward the door.

“I need to talk to her.””

I watched him leave.

And for the first time in seven years of marriage, I wondered if I had ever truly known him.

That evening, I searched through the security settings.

The camera did not simply stop working.

It had been manually disconnected.

And the last person who accessed the system was not Patricia.

It was Daniel.

I stared at the screen.

My hands went cold.

Why would my husband turn off the camera?

Before I could think, my phone rang.

It was a message from an unknown number.

One sentence.

May you like

One sentence that changed everything.

“Your husband knows exactly what his mother did.””
