Chapter 7: The Photograph That Destroyed My Family
I called my mother seventeen times.
She didn't answer once.
By midnight, I had spread every photograph and document Gideon had given me across the dining table. The image of my mother standing beside Preston outside the burning building lay in the center.
I enlarged it again.
Her face was unmistakable.
Margaret Lawson.
The woman who had raised me alone after my father died. The woman who had cried beside my hospital bed and told me she would never forgive Preston for letting me get hurt.
The woman who had held my hand during my first skin graft operation.
She had been there.
Outside the burning building.
With him.
My phone finally rang at 12:43 a.m.
"Vivian?""
My mother's voice sounded sleepy.
"Where were you five years ago on October seventeenth?""
Silence.
"Mom?""
"Why are you asking me that?""
"Because I have a photograph.""
Another silence.
Then she whispered, "Where did you get it?""
My stomach dropped.
"So it's real.""
"Vivian, listen to me.""
"Were you outside that building?""
"Please don't do this over the phone.""
"Did you know Preston was there?""
She began crying.
I closed my eyes.
"Mom, did you help him?""
"No!""
The answer came too quickly.
"Then explain the photograph.""
"I can't.""
"You can't or you won't?""
"Vivian, some things are more complicated than they look.""
I laughed bitterly.
"That's exactly what Preston said when I asked him about the insurance money.""
She inhaled sharply.
"He's been talking to you?""
"Mom, you need to tell me the truth.""
"I'll come tomorrow.""
"Tomorrow is the gala.""
"Then I'll see you there.""
The call ended.
I stared at the screen.
My mother had just confirmed that the photograph wasn't fake.
And she had refused to explain why she was standing beside my husband while I was trapped inside a burning building.
At eight the next morning, Gideon arrived at my apartment with two security personnel.
He found me sitting at the dining table, staring at the photograph.
"Have you spoken to Margaret?"" he asked.
"She admitted she was there.""
Gideon pulled out a chair.
"Did she explain her involvement?""
"No.""
He examined the photograph.
"Our investigators believe this was taken approximately seven minutes after the first emergency call.""
"Seven minutes?""
"Yes. The firefighters hadn't reached the building yet.""
I looked at the image again.
Preston's car was parked near the driveway.
My mother stood beside him.
And the metal case was in his hand.
"What's inside that case?""
"We don't know.""
I pointed to the bottom of the photograph.
"Can you see the license plate?""
Gideon enlarged it.
The plate belonged to a vehicle registered to a company called Lawson Property Holdings.
I stared at the name.
"That's my mother's company.""
Gideon looked at me.
"Do you know what it does?""
"She told me it was a small property management business.""
He made a note.
"Vivian, there's something else. The company received three payments from Preston's consulting firm in the months before the fire.""
My throat tightened.
"How much?""
"Approximately $190,000.""
I pushed the photograph away.
"My own mother?""
Gideon didn't answer.
Instead, he placed another document on the table.
It was a copy of a property deed.
The Connecticut house Preston had purchased six months after the fire.
I recognized the address immediately.
"Why are you showing me this?""
"Look at the co-owner's name.""
I moved closer.
The deed listed Preston Whitmore and Margaret Lawson.
My mother owned half of the house.
The house Preston had claimed to purchase as a gift for my recovery.
The house where my mother had visited me every Sunday.
The house where she'd watched me struggle to dress because my scars hurt whenever I raised my arms.
I couldn't speak.
Gideon lowered his voice.
"Vivian, your mother wasn't just receiving payments. She had a financial interest in the property purchased with the insurance proceeds.""
I covered my face.
For five years, I'd believed my mother was the one person who had never betrayed me.
Now I didn't know who was left.
At eleven, Gideon's legal team received a call from an investigator.
The original fire technician had agreed to provide a recorded statement.
His name was Samuel Price.
We met him at a private office near Midtown.
Samuel was in his sixties, with tired eyes and a trembling hand.
He sat across from me.
"Mrs. Whitmore, I've wanted to apologize for a long time.""
I swallowed.
"Did you know the electrical system had been tampered with?""
He nodded.
"I discovered a bypass connection during my inspection. It had been installed incorrectly. I reported it immediately.""
"Who paid you to withdraw your statement?""
He looked down.
"Preston's company contacted me. They offered money to keep the report from becoming public.""
"Did you know I was inside the building?""
His face crumpled.
"No. I swear I didn't know anyone was staying there that night.""
"Did you know someone had deliberately damaged the wiring?""
He hesitated.
Then he opened a folder.
"I kept a copy of the original maintenance request.""
He slid it across the table.
The request had been submitted under Preston's employee account.
It specifically instructed the maintenance contractor to disable a safety alarm in the upstairs study.
I stared at the page.
"Why would he do that?""
Samuel shook his head.
"I don't know. But I was told to make the adjustment before the weekend.""
Gideon asked, "Who gave you that instruction?""
Samuel pointed to the authorization.
A signature.
Cassidy Vaughn.
I felt the room spin.
"She was involved too.""
Samuel nodded.
"She came to the property with Mr. Whitmore twice. I remember her because she kept asking whether the work would be finished before Friday.""
Gideon closed the folder.
"Thank you, Mr. Price.""
Before we left, Samuel reached for my hand.
"I'm sorry I took the money.""
I looked at him.
"Your silence cost me five years.""
He lowered his head.
I didn't forgive him.
Not yet.
As I returned to Gideon's car, my phone vibrated.
A message from my mother.
*Margaret: Vivian, please don't go to the gala tonight. I need to tell you something before you make a terrible mistake.*
I typed one question.
*Vivian: Did you know Preston planned to hurt me?*
Her response arrived almost immediately.
*Margaret: I knew he wanted you out of the way. I didn't know he would let the fire happen.*
I stopped walking.
Gideon noticed my expression.
"What is it?""
I showed him the screen.
He read it twice.
Then he quietly said:
"Vivian, your mother just admitted she knew about the plan.""
May you like
And suddenly, the gala wasn't simply going to expose my husband.
It was going to expose my entire family.
