Chapter 1: The Scars He Wanted to Hide

"Vivian, you're disgusting. Nobody wants to look at your scarred body!""

My husband said it while I stood in front of our bedroom mirror, holding a black evening dress against my body.

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

Preston Whitmore stood behind me, adjusting his silk tie. His reflection looked immaculate. Expensive watch.

Perfect haircut. A smile that had once made me believe I was the luckiest woman alive.

Then his eyes moved to the raised, uneven scars stretching across my back.

"Did you hear me?"" he asked.

"You can't seriously expect me to take you to a corporate gala looking like that.""

I slowly lowered the dress.

"These scars are from the fire, Preston.""

He sighed as though I'd reminded him of an embarrassing family secret.

"That was five years ago. Must you bring it up every time?""

I turned toward him.

"You're alive because of that fire.""

His jaw tightened.

"And I've spent five years paying for it.""

The words landed harder than any slap.

Five years earlier, Preston and I had been celebrating his promotion at a small lakeside rental in Connecticut. A faulty electrical panel sparked a fire while he was asleep upstairs.

I woke to the smell of smoke.

By the time I reached him, flames had swallowed the staircase. I dragged him toward the balcony, using my own body to shield him when part of the ceiling collapsed.

He escaped without a scratch.

I woke up eleven days later in a hospital.

Thirteen skin graft procedures followed. Months of physical therapy. Painful nights when even the fabric of my pajamas felt like sandpaper.

Preston had held my hand during the first few weeks.

He'd kissed my forehead and promised that nothing would ever change.

But eventually, his visits became shorter.

His affection disappeared.

And the woman who had saved his life became an inconvenience.

"There's a black-tie event next Friday," I said quietly.

"I thought I could wear something elegant.""

"Then wear something that covers your back.""

"Why?""

"Because people stare, Vivian.""

I stared at him.

"People stare because I survived?""

Preston picked up his phone.

"People don't need to be reminded of an ugly incident every time they attend a party.""

He walked toward the door.

Then he stopped.

"Oh, and Cassidy will be organizing the gala. She has excellent taste. Let her handle your outfit.""

Cassidy Vaughn.

His twenty-seven-year-old communications director.

The woman whose perfume had recently started appearing on his shirts.

The woman who called him at midnight and laughed at jokes I wasn't allowed to hear.

I already knew something was wrong.

I just hadn't allowed myself to say it aloud.

The following afternoon, I drove to Preston's office to deliver the presentation folder he'd forgotten.

His executive assistant was away from her desk, and his office door was slightly open.

Then I heard Cassidy's laughter.

"Did you actually tell your wife she couldn't wear a backless dress?""

Preston chuckled.

"Someone had to. Imagine her standing under those ballroom lights.""

"Honestly, I think she should stay home.""

"That's the plan.""

I stopped outside the door.

Cassidy continued.

"I've already told the event coordinator that everyone must wear backless gowns. No shawls, no wraps, no exceptions. It's a formal aesthetic.""

Preston laughed again.

"You're terrible.""

Cassidy's voice softened.

"Your wife will never come. She can't stand people seeing her scars.""

"Exactly.""

There was a pause.

Then I heard a kiss.

"Once I get that promotion," Preston whispered, "I'm filing for divorce. I won't have to pretend anymore.""

Cassidy giggled.

"And what about our baby?""

My fingers tightened around the folder.

"Our baby deserves a father who isn't trapped in a miserable marriage.""

I felt the hallway tilt.

Baby.

She was pregnant.

"Have you told Vivian?"" Cassidy asked.

"Why would I? She's too busy feeling sorry for herself.""

"Good. Because I want the apartment, the house in Connecticut, and the money you promised me.""

"You're getting everything, sweetheart.""

I stepped backward.

My heel struck a decorative table.

The sound made them go quiet.

"Who's there?"" Preston called.

I didn't answer.

I walked straight toward the elevators, holding the folder against my chest.

Inside the elevator, I finally looked down.

My hands were shaking so badly that I could barely press the button.

When I reached the parking garage, my phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

"Hello?""

"Mrs. Whitmore?""

"Yes.""

"This is Gideon Ashford.""

I froze.

Gideon Ashford was Preston's employer, the billionaire founder and chairman of Ashford Global. His name appeared in financial magazines, on skyscrapers, and in headlines about acquisitions worth billions.

I'd met him only twice.

Both times, he'd been polite but reserved.

"Mr. Ashford?""

"I understand you were at my company's headquarters today.""

"Yes. I was dropping off some documents.""

There was a brief silence.

Then his voice changed.

"Vivian, I need to speak with you privately. It's about the fire five years ago.""

My stomach tightened.

"What about it?""

"I've discovered something concerning your husband.""

May you like

He paused.

"And I don't believe you know what he did while you were lying in that hospital bed.""
