Chapter 2: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For three seconds after the call ended, nobody moved.

Rain began tapping against the bedroom window, soft at first, then harder, as though the sky had been waiting for permission to break.

I stared at Daniel's phone.

My father's name was still displayed on the screen.

"Dad," I whispered, pressing redial.

Daniel lunged toward me.

I stepped backward and held the phone against my chest.

"Touch me again, and I'll scream loud enough for the neighbors to hear.""

He stopped.

My mother wrapped a towel around her shoulders, leaving a trail of water across the bedroom floor. Her eyes moved between Daniel and me.

"Emily, put the phone down," she said.

"Why?""

"Because you're upsetting yourself.""

I stared at her.

"MY FATHER JUST CALLED ME FROM THE DEAD!""

She flinched.

That tiny movement told me more than any confession could have.

I dialed again.

This time, the number went straight to voicemail.

I tried a third time.

Nothing.

"Where is he?"" I demanded.

"Where is my father?""

My mother sat on the edge of the bed.

"Your father has been through a great deal.""

"Then tell me where he is!""

Daniel buttoned his shirt with trembling fingers.

"Emily, you need to understand something. Your father wasn't the man you remember.""

"Funny. That's exactly what Mom said when I asked about the money.""

His hands stopped.

I lifted the estate agreement.

"Two million seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Six years ago, you told me Dad left us with nothing. I sold Grandma's jewelry to help pay his debts. I gave you money every month.""

My mother stared at the floor.

"I was trying to keep this family together.""

"You took money from your own daughter while hiding millions?""

"It's complicated.""

"No. Complicated is a tax return. This is a lie.""

Daniel reached for the document.

"Let me explain the agreement.""

I pulled it away.

"Start with why you're a beneficiary.""

He looked toward my mother.

That was when I realized they had been doing this for years. Not just hiding an affair. Not just exchanging secret glances or meeting behind my back.

They had a language between them.

A shared history I had never been allowed to see.

"Tell me," I said.

Daniel exhaled.

"Your father approached me before we met.""

The room seemed to shrink around me.

"When?""

"About nine years ago.""

I stared at him.

We had met eight years ago at a charity fundraiser in downtown Atlanta. He'd been charming without being arrogant, attentive without being overwhelming. He remembered that I hated lilies and loved old bookstores. He had listened when I talked about my father, sometimes asking questions that seemed unusually specific.

At the time, I'd thought he was simply interested in my life.

"How did Dad know you?""

Daniel rubbed his jaw.

"We worked together.""

"Worked together doing what?""

"Business.""

"What business?""

He didn't answer quickly enough.

I slapped the agreement against his chest.

"You're going to tell me the truth now.""

My mother stood abruptly.

"Richard was involved in things you wouldn't understand.""

"Then help me understand!""

"He made mistakes," she snapped.

"Terrible mistakes. People were threatening him. The company was falling apart, and he was afraid.""

"So he disappeared?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"He wanted you safe.""

I shook my head.

"Safe from what?""

Neither answered.

I moved toward the bedroom door, but Daniel stepped into my path.

"Please, Emily. Don't leave until you hear everything.""

I looked at his wet shoes, the shirt he'd hastily buttoned, the bed where I'd spent eight years believing I was loved.

"I have spent eight years listening to you. You can spend the next eight minutes answering me.""

He swallowed.

"Your father owned more than a construction company. He had investments, properties, and private business arrangements. Some of them went bad.""

"Then why did you marry me?""

His eyes flickered.

My stomach twisted.

"Was it the money?""

"No.""

"Was it revenge?""

"No.""

"Then what?""

He looked down at the document in my hand.

"I was supposed to keep you close.""

The words landed harder than the water I'd thrown.

I stared at him.

"Keep me close to what?""

Before he could answer, my mother's phone rang.

She glanced at the screen and immediately turned away.

I caught the name before she could hide it.

*MARCUS BELL.*

I knew that name.

Marcus had been my father's attorney. He'd attended the funeral, delivered a solemn speech about my father's generosity, and later told Mom there was nothing left to inherit.

I pointed at her phone.

"Answer it.""

She shook her head.

"Emily, please.""

"ANSWER IT!""

She accepted the call with trembling fingers.

"Marcus, now isn't a good time.""

A man's voice came through the speaker, loud enough for me to hear.

"Patricia, Richard says the original documents have surfaced. We need to move the meeting.""

My mother went rigid.

I stepped closer.

"What original documents?""

Marcus fell silent.

Then he asked, "Who's with you?""

I snatched the phone from her hand.

"This is Emily Thompson. What documents?""

His breathing grew shallow.

"Emily, I can't discuss that over the phone.""

"You told me my father left nothing.""

"I told you what I was instructed to tell you.""

The words chilled me.

"By whom?""

He hesitated.

Then Daniel whispered, "Don't.""

I turned toward him.

"By whom, Marcus?""

The attorney finally answered.

"Your father.""

My mother covered her mouth.

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

"My father instructed you to lie to me?""

"Emily, there's a reason for everything that happened.""

"Then tell me the reason.""

Marcus lowered his voice.

"Because if your father had told you the truth six years ago, you would have been in danger.""

I looked at Daniel.

He wouldn't meet my eyes.

Marcus continued.

"And now that you've seen the settlement agreement, I need you to do one thing. Don't sign anything. Don't accept anything from Daniel. And under no circumstances should you go with your mother to the place where Richard is staying.""

I gripped the phone tighter.

"Where is my father?""

Before Marcus could answer, another voice came through the line.

A familiar, weak voice.

"Marcus, hang up.""

My heart stopped.

"Daddy?""

The voice fell silent.

Then my father spoke again.

"Emmy, sweetheart, there's something you need to know about the man you married.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

My father continued.

"He didn't come into your life because of the inheritance.""

I let out a shaky breath.

"Then why?""

May you like

A long pause followed.

"Because I paid him to.""
