Chapter 12: My Mother's Confession
Patricia sat at the kitchen table with a glass of water trembling between her hands.
Detective Harris had called for additional officers. One was searching the backyard, while another stood beside the broken window. Laura paced near the refrigerator, her arms folded tightly across her chest.
I sat opposite my mother.
For the first time in my life, I wasn't waiting for her to comfort me.
I was waiting for her to tell me who had murdered a man whose disappearance had been hidden for six years.
"You said you saw who killed Samuel," I reminded her.
She nodded.
"Then tell us.""
Her eyes moved toward Laura.
"I don't want her here.""
Laura stopped pacing.
"You're unbelievable.""
Harris raised a hand.
"Both of you. Patricia, you can speak privately with me if you'd prefer, but withholding information may complicate this investigation.""
My mother stared at the glass.
"Six years ago, Richard called me late one evening. He told me to come to the warehouse because something had gone terribly wrong.""
"What time?"" Harris asked.
"Just after nine.""
"Did you go alone?""
"Yes.""
Laura scoffed.
"You expect us to believe you drove to an abandoned warehouse at night because your husband asked you to?""
Patricia looked up sharply.
"Richard was my husband. I went because I thought he was in danger.""
"And was he?""
"Yes.""
My mother's voice broke.
"When I arrived, Samuel was lying on the floor. There was blood on his shirt. Richard was kneeling beside him, trying to stop the bleeding.""
I gripped the edge of the table.
"What happened next?""
"Daniel came through the side entrance.""
Harris leaned forward.
"Was he carrying a weapon?""
Patricia nodded.
"A gun.""
Laura closed her eyes.
"Go on.""
"Daniel said Samuel had stolen company money and threatened to expose everyone involved. Richard told him to put the gun down. They argued.""
"What were they arguing about?"" Harris asked.
"Richard wanted to call an ambulance. Daniel said Samuel was already dead.""
I felt sick.
"Was he?""
Patricia shook her head.
"No. Samuel was still breathing.""
Silence filled the kitchen.
"Then what happened?"" I asked.
My mother began crying.
"Daniel pointed the gun at Richard. He told him to step away from Samuel.""
Harris's expression hardened.
"Did Daniel shoot Samuel?""
Patricia pressed her hands over her mouth.
"Yes.""
Laura gripped the counter so tightly that her fingers whitened.
"And Richard?""
"He attacked Daniel. They struggled. I heard another gunshot, and Richard fell.""
My breath caught.
"Was Dad hit?""
"Yes.""
"Where?""
"His shoulder.""
I remembered my father's call earlier that day. The urgency in his voice. The warning to leave the house. The way he had abruptly disconnected.
"Then how did he escape?""
Patricia wiped her cheeks.
"I helped him.""
I stared at her.
"You helped him escape?""
"Daniel was distracted. Richard told me to take you home. He said he would find another way out.""
I shook my head.
"Why was I there?""
"You'd been sleeping in my car. I'd picked you up from a friend's house earlier that evening.""
I tried to remember the night.
The rain.
The yellow light.
My father's ring.
A gunshot.
It all fit together in fragments.
"Did you know Daniel was going to be there?""
"No.""
"Did you know he had been paid to marry me?""
She hesitated.
"Not at first.""
"Then when?""
"About a year after your wedding.""
I felt the anger rising again.
"And you kept it secret.""
"I was afraid he'd hurt you.""
"So you slept with him?""
She lowered her head.
"I know how terrible that sounds.""
"It sounds exactly like what you did.""
Harris placed his pen on the table.
"Mrs. Thompson, why did you tell everyone Richard was dead?""
Patricia looked at me.
"Because Daniel threatened us. He said if Richard returned, he would make sure you were charged with Samuel's murder.""
I felt cold.
"He threatened to frame me?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because the company accounts had been moved into your name. Daniel said the paperwork made you responsible for the money that disappeared.""
I looked at Harris.
"The forged documents.""
He nodded.
"That would explain the apparent motive.""
My mother continued.
"Daniel told me Richard had died from his injuries. He said he'd arranged for the body to be removed and that I needed to identify the coffin at the funeral.""
I stared at her.
"But you knew the coffin was empty?""
She began sobbing.
"Yes.""
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
I'd spent six years grieving at a grave that contained nobody.
My mother had stood beside me while I placed flowers on it.
She'd held my hand and told me my father was finally at peace.
All the while, she knew the truth.
I stood so abruptly that my chair fell backward.
"Get out.""
Patricia looked up.
"Emily—"
"Get out of my sight.""
"Please, sweetheart.""
"STOP CALLING ME THAT!""
My voice cracked.
I pressed both hands against the table, fighting to remain upright.
"You let me mourn a living man. You let me believe I was alone in the world. You helped a criminal turn my own identity into a weapon, and now you want me to feel sorry for you?""
My mother couldn't answer.
Harris signaled to the officer near the doorway.
"Take Mrs. Thompson to the station. We'll need a formal statement.""
Patricia rose slowly.
As she passed me, she reached for my hand.
I pulled away.
She stopped, looked at me, and whispered, "There is one more thing.""
I closed my eyes.
"I don't want to hear it.""
"You need to know why Daniel chose you.""
I looked at her.
She swallowed.
"Your father didn't hire Daniel to marry you simply because he could protect you. He hired him because Daniel was the only person who knew the truth about your biological father.""
I stared at her.
"Victor Hale?""
She nodded.
"Daniel knew Victor was your father before you were born. He also knew Victor had left a separate inheritance for you.""
Harris turned sharply.
"Where is this inheritance?""
Patricia shook her head.
"I don't know the full details. Richard said it was hidden in a trust controlled by Victor's attorney.""
"Who was the attorney?""
She looked at me.
"Marcus Bell.""
The name landed like a stone.
My father's attorney had lied about the estate, concealed documents, and warned me not to trust Daniel. Now his name was connected to a secret inheritance from the man whose body might have been buried beneath the warehouse.
Harris escorted Patricia outside.
Laura sat beside me.
"Emily, I know this is unbearable.""
I laughed weakly.
"I don't even know which part of my life was real.""
She took a breath.
"Your memories were real. The people around you lied about what they meant.""
I looked at her.
"Did you love me when I was born?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Every second.""
"Then why didn't you find me?""
"I never stopped looking.""
She reached into her bag and pulled out a folded letter.
"I wrote this the day I learned Richard had taken you. I kept it because I thought someday you'd read it.""
I opened it.
The paper was yellowed at the edges.
My little Emily,
If they tell you I abandoned you, please know that I never chose to leave. If they tell you I didn't love you, remember that I searched for you every day. I don't know what they'll say about me, but I hope one day you'll understand that I never stopped being your mother.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
Then my phone rang.
Marcus Bell.
I answered.
"Why did you lie to me?""
His voice sounded strained.
"Emily, where are you?""
"Answer the question.""
"I can explain everything, but you must listen carefully. Daniel has discovered the Savannah account.""
Harris, who had returned to the doorway, immediately moved closer.
"What account?"" I demanded.
"The one Victor Hale established before your birth. It contains the original ownership records for the construction company, the missing financial ledgers, and evidence that could expose everyone involved in the fraud.""
"Who has access?""
"Only the person named in the trust.""
"Me?""
"Yes.""
I gripped the phone.
"Then why are you calling me?""
Marcus hesitated.
"Because Daniel is on his way to Savannah.""
I looked at Detective Harris.
He was already reaching for his radio.
Marcus lowered his voice.
"And Emily, there's something else. The bank has just notified me that someone attempted to withdraw the entire trust this morning.""
My stomach dropped.
"Who?""
"I don't know yet. The request was submitted electronically using your identity.""
I closed my eyes.
Another forged signature.
Another attempt to steal my life.
Then Marcus spoke the words that made everything suddenly clear.
"The request wasn't rejected because the signature was false.""
I could barely breathe.
"Then why was it rejected?""
"Because the trust has a second beneficiary who must approve any withdrawal.""
"Who?""
Marcus fell silent.
I heard paper rustling on his end.
Then he said, "Your biological father, Victor Hale.""
I stared at Laura.
She shook her head in disbelief.
"That's impossible," I whispered.
"He's dead.""
Marcus's voice trembled.
"Emily, we don't know that.""
Before I could respond, Detective Harris's radio crackled.
An officer's voice came through.
"Detective, we've got a new development. The medical examiner has completed a preliminary identification of the remains found beneath the concrete.""
Harris pressed the radio to his ear.
"Who is it?""
A long pause followed.
Then the officer answered.
"Victor Hale.""
I felt the room tilt.
My biological father had been dead for six years.
May you like
Yet someone had just tried to access his trust.
And according to the bank, he was still listed as a living beneficiary.
