Chapter 8: The Price of the Original Trust Deed

By noon, my grandfather's recording had been delivered to three different devices, but none of us could determine who had sent it.

The email address was newly created. The audio file contained no obvious identifying metadata. And the photograph of the trust deed showed a document that should have been locked inside my father's private archive.

Someone had access to our most sensitive records.

Someone who knew exactly where to find them.

At the hospital, my father paced beside the window while I spoke to Detective Brooks on the phone.

"We've received a recording that may be relevant to the suspected fraud," I explained.

"The sender claims my grandfather is alive and wants to meet me at the old Meridian building.""

"Do not go alone," Detective Brooks replied.

"In fact, I strongly advise you not to go at all until we can assess the threat.""

"I understand.""

"Ms. Moretti, I'm serious. If the sender is connected to the attack on your family's security director, this could be an attempt to lure you into danger.""

I looked at my father.

"I won't take unnecessary risks.""

After ending the call, I placed the phone on the table.

My father immediately shook his head.

"You cannot go to that building.""

"I haven't agreed to anything.""

"You were thinking about it.""

"Because somebody knows what happened to Mom, and Grandpa claims he can tell us.""

"He could be lying.""

"Then why send a recording that implicates himself?""

"To manipulate you.""

I studied him.

"Dad, what exactly did Grandpa do before he disappeared?""

He stopped pacing.

"He had become increasingly secretive. He stopped attending family gatherings, changed attorneys, and transferred several assets into companies none of us recognized. When your mother began investigating Meridian, he accused her of interfering in matters she didn't understand.""

"Did he threaten her?""

My father looked down.

"Once.""

The word struck harder than a shout.

"When?""

"About a month before the accident. I walked into his study and heard him telling her that she should stop digging into the company. She told him she wouldn't stop until she knew where the money was going.""

"What did he say?""

My father swallowed.

"He said she would regret choosing strangers over her own family.""

I sat very still.

"Why didn't you tell the police?""

"I did. But without a recording or a witness willing to testify, it became his word against mine. After he disappeared, I thought the danger had passed.""

"And when Mom died?""

"I believed the two events were connected. I just couldn't prove it.""

For years, I'd imagined my mother as a woman who died in a tragic accident, leaving behind a family that slowly learned to live with the loss.

Now I wondered how much of that story had been carefully constructed.

At 1:20 p.m., Luca DeSantis arrived at the hospital with his general counsel, Margaret Shaw. Adrian Whitmore joined them by video conference.

Luca listened to everything we had learned, then leaned forward.

"The immediate priority is Northstar," he said.

"If Ryan is using the acquisition to conceal suspicious transfers, we need to prevent the transaction from closing.""

Margaret opened her laptop.

"We've already notified Northstar's independent directors that the Moretti authorization is disputed. They'll require verification before proceeding. But there's another concern.""

She turned the screen toward us.

"Ryan submitted a revised financing schedule this morning. It includes an additional collateral facility secured by assets listed under the Moretti trust.""

My father stood.

"He submitted it after we notified him that the authorization was fraudulent?""

"Yes," Margaret replied.

"He claims the revised schedule reflects an earlier agreement.""

I felt my anger return.

"He's still trying to use my family's assets.""

"Which is why Northstar's board will likely suspend the closing," Luca said.

"But if Ryan has another source of funding, he could attempt to complete the transaction through a separate entity.""

"Meridian Atlantic," I said.

Margaret nodded.

"We're investigating that connection.""

Adrian's voice came through the speaker.

"Claire, I need you to understand something. If this is an organized financial scheme, the acquisition may be only one piece of it. The company could be used to move assets, secure loans, and create the appearance of legitimate business activity.""

"So the more valuable Caldwell Capital appears, the easier it becomes to conceal the money.""

"Exactly.""

My father looked at me.

"Which is another reason not to meet Anthony.""

I turned toward Luca.

"If I wanted to arrange a controlled meeting at Meridian, could your security team help?""

My father stared at me.

"Claire.""

"I'm not going there alone. I'll cooperate with the police, and I won't bring any original documents. But I need to know whether Grandpa is alive and what he knows.""

Detective Brooks had already warned me against the meeting, and I wasn't going to ignore her advice. Any contact would have to be coordinated with investigators.

Luca nodded slowly.

"We can help preserve evidence and coordinate with the authorities. But nobody should enter that building until the police have assessed it.""

For the first time that day, my father didn't argue.

At 3:46 p.m., Margaret received a call from Northstar's chairman.

She listened, asked three questions, then ended the call.

"Ryan has requested an emergency meeting with the board tomorrow morning," she said.

"He's claiming Claire's signature was valid when it was submitted and that the current dispute is the result of a personal conflict.""

I almost laughed.

"He's trying to turn financial fraud into a divorce dispute.""

"That's precisely what he's doing," Margaret replied.

Then her expression changed.

"There's something else. Northstar received an anonymous package containing an older version of the trust deed. It appears to transfer voting rights to a beneficiary named Anthony Moretti.""

My father gripped the edge of the table.

"That document was never executed.""

"Northstar's lawyers agree it has several inconsistencies. But the package also contained a letter claiming Anthony remained the beneficial owner of Meridian Infrastructure Holdings.""

I looked at my father.

"Could Grandpa still control Meridian?""

"It's possible," he said reluctantly.

"If he arranged the ownership structure before disappearing, he might have retained control through intermediaries.""

"Then Ryan could be working for him.""

"Or someone could be using Anthony's name.""

Before anyone could respond, my phone rang.

The caller ID showed Ryan Caldwell.

I answered with the speaker on.

"Claire," Ryan said urgently.

"We need to meet.""

"Talk to my attorney.""

"This isn't about the divorce.""

"Then tell me what it's about.""

He took a breath.

"Vanessa has disappeared.""

I exchanged a glance with Luca.

"Why should I care?""

"Because she has documents that could destroy both of us.""

"Only one of us forged my signature.""

His voice dropped.

"You don't understand what you've stepped into. Martin isn't the person you need to worry about.""

"Who is?""

Silence.

Then Ryan said something that made my father turn sharply toward the phone.

"Anthony is alive. And he's coming for the trust.""

The line went dead.

A moment later, a text appeared.

It contained an address in Brooklyn and a photograph of Vanessa standing outside the old Meridian building.
