Chapter 10: The Second Car

The house went dark, and my father grabbed my wrist.

"Stay behind me.""

Somewhere downstairs, glass shattered. A security alarm began screaming, then abruptly stopped.

I heard footsteps in the hallway.

"Mr. Moretti!"" one of the guards shouted.

"We're checking the generator!""

My father pulled me into his study and locked the door. He reached beneath his desk and pressed a concealed switch. Emergency lights flickered on, illuminating the bookshelves and the photograph of my mother lying between us.

I stared at him.

"You said the second car belonged to you.""

He didn't answer.

"Dad, look at me. Were you following Mom the night she died?""

He turned toward the door, listening for movement outside.

"Yes.""

The word struck me like a slap.

"Why?""

"Because she'd told me she was meeting someone from Meridian. I knew your grandfather had threatened her, and I was afraid she was walking into something dangerous.""

"So you followed her?""

"I kept my distance. I didn't want her to know I was there because I thought she'd refuse to tell me where she was going.""

I remembered the years after my mother's death. My father had become obsessed with security cameras, locked doors, and background checks. He'd insisted that every family document be stored in a private archive. I'd thought grief had made him cautious.

Now I wondered whether fear had made him a prisoner.

"What happened that night?""

He sat heavily in his chair.

"I was three cars behind her when another vehicle appeared. A black SUV. It followed her for nearly twenty minutes.""

"Did you see the driver?""

"No. The windows were tinted.""

"Then what?""

"Your mother turned onto the road near the river. The SUV accelerated. I tried to catch up, but a truck came between us.""

His voice broke slightly.

"By the time I reached the bend, her car had gone through the barrier.""

I gripped the edge of the desk.

"You saw her car go into the river?""

"I saw the taillights disappear.""

"And you never told the police about the SUV?""

"I did. They found no vehicle matching my description. When they examined my car, they discovered damage to the front bumper and concluded I'd been involved in a collision with your mother's vehicle.""

I stared at him.

"Had you?""

"No. I struck the barrier while trying to avoid the truck.""

He opened a drawer and removed a small envelope.

"I kept the photographs from the investigation. I couldn't bear to destroy them.""

Inside were printed images of his damaged car, the road barrier, and a blurry photograph of the black SUV taken by a traffic camera.

A partial license plate was visible.

My father pointed to it.

"The police couldn't identify the vehicle. But Martin told me the registration belonged to a company associated with Meridian.""

"Why didn't you pursue it?""

"Because two weeks later, Anthony disappeared. Then someone sent me photographs of you leaving work, entering your apartment, and visiting friends. There was a note telling me that if I continued investigating, you would be next.""

My throat tightened.

"You let me believe Mom's death was an accident.""

"I thought it was the only way to keep you safe.""

"And what about Ryan? Did you know he was connected to Meridian?""

"No. But I should have investigated him more carefully before you married him.""

I stepped away.

"I don't need you to have been perfect, Dad. I needed you to trust me with the truth.""

Before he could answer, three sharp knocks sounded at the door.

"Mr. Moretti," the head of security called.

"It's safe to come out. The power failure appears to have been caused by an external breach. We found a cut cable near the service entrance.""

My father stood.

"Did you find anyone?""

"No, sir. But the rear gate was open, and the garden camera system was manually disabled.""

I looked at the photograph of my mother.

Someone had entered our property, delivered a message, and disappeared without being seen.

Whoever it was knew our security system better than the people paid to operate it.

My phone buzzed.

An incoming call from Detective Brooks.

"We've identified the blood from the Meridian building," she said.

"It's Vanessa Hart's.""

My stomach dropped.

"Is she alive?""

"We found her in an underground room. She's conscious, but she's been injured. Paramedics are taking her to the hospital.""

"Who attacked her?""

"She claims she was attacked by a man she recognized as Martin Keene.""

My father closed his eyes.

Detective Brooks continued.

"There's something else. Vanessa says Martin told her the chairman ordered the attack. She also claims she overheard a conversation about a second vehicle connected to your mother's death.""

I looked at my father.

"Does she know who was driving?""

"She says the driver was identified in an old Meridian security report. We're retrieving the file now.""

The call ended.

I turned to my father.

"You owe me the rest of the truth.""

He nodded slowly.

"I know.""

"Then tell me everything. No more protecting me.""

He sat down and opened the envelope again.

"There is one thing I never told the police," he said.

"The night your mother died, I received a call from Anthony. He said he'd arranged for her to be brought somewhere safe.""

I stared at him.

"Somewhere safe?""

"I thought he meant he was helping her escape whoever was following her. But when I reached the river, her car was already underwater.""

"Did you call him back?""

"Immediately. He told me to go home and say nothing. He said your mother was dead and that there was no reason to destroy the family over something that couldn't be changed.""

My hands trembled.

"And you listened?""

"I was afraid. I thought he had people watching you. I thought if I cooperated, he would leave you alone.""

I could barely recognize the man sitting in front of me.

My father had spent twelve years living with a secret that had shaped every decision he'd made. But his silence had not protected our family.

It had allowed the people responsible to keep operating.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, a message arrived from Vanessa.

I'm alive. Martin had the original recording.

Another message followed.

Your mother survived the crash.

I stopped breathing.

A third message appeared.

Claire, I saw her in the Meridian records. They took her somewhere after the accident.

I read the words aloud.

My father stood so quickly that his chair toppled backward.

"That's impossible," he whispered.

Then my phone rang again.

An unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice spoke calmly.

"Claire Moretti. Your mother is alive, but if you want to see her again, you must stop the investigation before Monday's acquisition closes.""

The call ended.

My father stared at me.

For the first time, neither of us knew what to believe.

May you like

But the photograph on the desk remained real.

And so did the voice that had just threatened us.
