Chapter 12: The Will That Never Existed

Robert's house stood on a quiet street outside Nashville.

I'd visited dozens of times during the six years I was married to Daniel.

But that morning, it felt like entering a stranger's home.

The front porch was decorated with birthday balloons left over from the previous weekend.

A silver banner still hung above the doorway.

HAPPY 70TH, ROBERT.

I almost laughed at the irony.

The birthday dinner had cost $4,800.

The lies surrounding it were worth far more.

Michael parked behind Robert's car.

Thomas followed us inside.

Robert was waiting in the living room with two attorneys.

One was his longtime estate lawyer, James Porter.

The other was a younger woman named Rachel Simmons.

"Sarah," Robert said, standing.

He looked tired.

His eyes were red, and his normally straight posture had begun to sag.

I hugged him.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then I stepped back.

"We need to see the will.""

James opened a leather briefcase.

"Before we proceed, I want to clarify that Robert requested this meeting to review the authenticity of two conflicting estate documents.""

He placed the first document on the coffee table.

It was dated four months earlier.

Under the heading LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT, Daniel's name appeared as the sole beneficiary.

The document claimed Robert had intentionally excluded Vanessa and his other relatives.

It also contained a clause stating that Daniel would receive all real estate holdings, investment accounts, and business interests.

I looked at Robert.

"Did you sign this?""

"No.""

James adjusted his glasses.

"Robert's signature appears on the document, but he has formally denied executing it.""

Rachel opened another folder.

"We've also identified irregularities in the notarization.""

I examined the final page.

The notary's name was familiar.

Vanessa's husband, Mark.

I looked up.

"Mark notarized this?""

James nodded.

"According to the document.""

Robert rubbed his forehead.

"Mark has never been a licensed notary.""

Silence filled the room.

I stared at the paper.

"So the entire will is fraudulent.""

"That is what we suspect," Rachel replied.

"We are arranging independent verification.""

Robert pointed to the second document.

"This is my actual will.""

It was dated two years earlier.

The beneficiaries included Vanessa, Daniel, and several charitable organizations.

There was also a separate provision for me.

A commercial property in downtown Nashville.

I stared at the valuation.

$1.2 million.

"Robert, I can't accept this.""

He looked at me.

"It's yours.""

"I don't want your money.""

He shook his head.

"It's not about money. It's about acknowledging what I should have acknowledged a long time ago.""

I felt my eyes fill.

"I don't know how to be your daughter.""

He took my hands.

"Then we start by getting to know each other.""

For a moment, the room felt peaceful.

Then Rachel cleared her throat.

"There's another issue.""

She opened a laptop.

"We traced the preparation of the fraudulent will to a law office in Franklin.""

Robert frowned.

"Which office?""

Rachel displayed the company name.

Mitchell Property Consulting.

Daniel's business.

I felt my stomach drop.

"He prepared his own father's will?""

"It appears someone at his company arranged the documents," Rachel said.

"We haven't established who physically prepared or submitted them.""

Michael leaned forward.

"Can we identify the person who requested the notarization?""

Rachel clicked another file.

An email appeared.

The sender was Daniel.

The recipient was Vanessa.

The subject line read:

*Dad's Estate—Final Version.*

I read the message.

"Once Dad signs, everything is secured. Sarah won't be able to interfere. If she causes problems, we'll use the medical petition.""

I looked at Robert.

He was staring at the screen.

"How could he do this to me?""

Nobody answered.

Then Rachel opened the attachment.

It contained a second document.

A power of attorney.

Daniel had listed himself as Robert's financial representative.

The signature was supposedly Robert's.

But Robert shook his head immediately.

"I never signed that.""

Michael leaned closer.

"Has any institution accepted this document?""

Rachel nodded.

"One investment firm temporarily accepted a copy pending verification.""

Robert stood.

"Which firm?""

She gave him the name.

His face turned pale.

"That's where most of my liquid assets are held.""

I looked at Michael.

"How much?""

Rachel checked her notes.

"Approximately $680,000.""

Robert sat down heavily.

"Daniel has been trying to move my money.""

I felt anger surge.

"He tried to steal from me, from my mother, and now from you.""

Robert covered his face.

"I raised him.""

Michael placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Right now, we need to stop any further transfers.""

Rachel immediately began contacting the investment firm.

Robert signed the necessary revocation documents.

Meanwhile, I received a message from Elizabeth.

*I found the original recording. The one Daniel never knew I kept.*

I replied.

*What does it contain?*

Her response came almost immediately.

*Proof that Daniel and Vanessa planned the conservatorship together.*

A file appeared.

I opened it.

Daniel's voice came through first.

"Once Sarah is declared incompetent, her accounts become manageable. I can settle the debts without her interfering.""

Vanessa laughed.

"And what about Dad?""

Daniel replied:

"Same arrangement. Once the new will is accepted, I control the properties. Nobody can challenge anything if the paperwork is already filed.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

Then Vanessa asked:

"What happens if Sarah discovers Elizabeth is alive?""

Daniel's answer was chilling.

"She won't have time to do anything. By then, everyone will believe she's unstable.""

The recording continued.

Vanessa asked another question.

"And the eighty-five thousand?""

Daniel laughed.

"That's already gone.""

I stopped the recording.

Michael stared at me.

"Sarah, we need to submit this to the investigators.""

Robert looked devastated.

"That woman is my daughter, and that man is my son.""

I turned toward him.

"Vanessa helped him steal from me.""

Robert nodded slowly.

"I know.""

Then his phone rang.

It was James.

He answered and listened for several seconds.

His expression changed.

"What do you mean the transfer was attempted?""

He stood.

"How much?""

A long pause.

Then he looked at Robert.

"They tried to move the entire $680,000 this morning.""

Robert grabbed the armrest.

"Did they succeed?""

James closed his eyes.

"Not all of it. The bank froze the transaction after receiving our revocation notice.""

I exhaled.

Then James added:

"But there's a problem.""

He placed another document on the table.

"The transfer request was submitted yesterday, before Robert signed the revocation.""

I stared at the page.

The receiving account belonged to a company registered overseas.

Its listed director was not Daniel.

Not Vanessa.

Not Elizabeth.

It was someone named Margaret Collins.

My mother's full name.

I felt the room tilt.

"That's impossible. My mother died two years ago.""

Rachel examined the document.

Then she looked at me.

"Sarah, this company was registered eleven months after your mother's death.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"Who registered it?""

Rachel turned the page.

The filing included a digital authorization.

And beneath the authorization was a signature I recognized immediately.

Mine.

I looked at Michael.

"I never registered that company.""

He stared at the document.

Then he said quietly:

"Sarah, I think Daniel has been preparing this fraud for much longer than we realized.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

*You have been looking in the wrong direction, Sarah. Daniel didn't create the company. He inherited it.*

A second message arrived.

*And if you want to know who really controls it, ask Robert about the night your mother died.*

I slowly raised my eyes toward him.

Robert had gone completely pale.

"Robert?""

He couldn't meet my gaze.

Finally, he whispered:

"Your mother didn't die in an accident.""

May you like

And before I could ask another question, he added:

"She was on her way to meet me when it happened.""
